Shops that have gone but not forgotten

What shops do you miss that have closed down. Mine would have to be woolworths. I use to love going in there.

@Sandinyourshoes

I used to love Cockburn Street Market in Edinburgh in the 70s and 80s. Alternative fashion, jewelry and haircolours. Lovely silver hoop earrings, puzzle rings - I still have some of the jewelry from there. I remember Afflecks Palace, I think it was, Manchester in the 80s, but I saw someplace called Afflecks Arcade on TV a few months ago - whether it was old film, I don’t know. I think it was about Madchester? I still have some postcards I got there. I miss shopping without masks and all the "old fashioned" shops. Maybe there will be a revival someday. Haven’t ventured to buy any clothes online yet, I prefer at least seeing clothes even if I can’t try them on. Only stuff I've got recently has been from Tesco/Asda!
Afflecks Palace is still on Oldham street, I've not been for a long time though so not sure how its holding up.

House of Fraser and Debenhams have closed recently in Dublin.
It really cuts down on customer choice availability Sad

LadyEloise · 02/12/2020 16:04

Oops I meant to add that it is so tough on the staff who lost their jobs.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 02/12/2020 16:33

Blooming Marvellous were great when I was pregnant. I had some amazing work dresses, jeans and jumpers from there.

baubling · 02/12/2020 16:34

Would be Woolworths too for me

Me too, expecially at this time of year.

jessstan1 · 02/12/2020 16:53

Kennedy's.
Sausages, pies and loads of other things. A lovely shop.

Sssloou · 02/12/2020 16:53

Yes Affleck’s still there - look my DD there recently - she was freaked out by it claustrophobia - literally still selling the same tie-dye, skull jewellery and incense !

Anyone remember Hyper Hyper - High St Kensington? London version of Affleck’s

Sssloou · 02/12/2020 17:09

Or am I thinking of Kensington Market? Were they on opposite sides of the road??

Maireas · 02/12/2020 17:13

Yes, I remember Pippy's in Sheffield! My dad wouldn't go in, and was shocked by the window display!

Maireas · 02/12/2020 17:14

I got lovely maternity wear from Blooming Marvellous. Also Formes (it was French?) early 90s.

grafittiartist · 02/12/2020 17:16

Au Naturel!
And what was the clothing shop that they used to be with?

Happynow001 · 02/12/2020 17:44

I still miss BhS..

grafittiartist · 02/12/2020 17:46

Athena

Maireas · 02/12/2020 17:54

@going to town - I haven't seen a Habitat shop for years. Maybe they're still trading, but they have long gone from the average high street.

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 04/12/2020 18:16

This is a bit niche but the Corn Exchange in Manchester used to be the most amazing place . Occult shops, incense and tie-dye galore. I even worked in one of the shops and the owner took me and a couple of guys down to Glastonbury in the back of a transit van.. We were there for a week, as a trader you had nicer loos etc. It was amazing seeing the fields fill up with tents. Queueing for the phone was a pain . 1991 so pre mobile s.
I digress, the Corn Exchange was unique and the remodelling after one of the bombs ruined it in its entirety. Gone were the sole traders and in came the Conran restaurants. I won't lie, that devastated me for a long while.

LadyEloise · 05/12/2020 08:12

There was a bakery in Dublin called Auric.
Long gone now, but I still sometimes think of its Austrian Bombe cake.

wizzler · 05/12/2020 08:23

The emoji I had completely forgotten Pippys in Sheffield, I think it was near the Wapentake?
Fond memories of Suggs sports and my dad taking me to buy a hockey stick there when I started secondary school

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 05/12/2020 08:27

Wizzler. one word: Redgates😍

Shops that have gone but not forgotten
GlamGloria · 05/12/2020 08:30

Anyone remember Press and Bastien? I still have the most gorgeous leather jacket from there which must be over 20 years old!
Also Woolworths and Our Price

marjorie2607 · 05/12/2020 08:35

Has no one mentioned Beatties in Wolverhampton? I really miss their knitting group.

Scarby9 · 05/12/2020 08:36

Athena - I went there almost every Saturday as a student, happily browsing through those swinging display things (don't know how to describe them if you didn't have that experience) with a couple of friends. All our rooms were plastered with Athena posters.

C&A - Brilliant for T shirts and ski-wear.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 05/12/2020 08:38

The Pier was definitely a loss (one of the first victims of the 2008 economic crash). I have quite a lot of Christmas decorations from there.

Knickerbox.

Giggorata · 05/12/2020 09:04

Boodle Am in Leeds. (I hope Salamander in Lincoln survives)

Yes to the Pier, Habitat and Spoils.
BHS lighting and Xmas depts

I'd forgotten about Ottakars.

And going way back, Biba.

Scarby9 · 05/12/2020 09:22

Oh yes, The Pier. IIRC wasn't it the overarching group that went bust, taking The Pier (which was doing okay) down with it?

AliceBlueGown · 05/12/2020 09:23

Borders (in Leeds) - coffee, music, books on Saturday's.
