Why is there Friends merchandise EVERYWHERE?

COVIDcausesCHAOS · 30/11/2020 13:17

Seriously, every website that I'm looking for xmas gifts on seems to be full of Friends merchandise!

Why?

Didn't Friends finish in 2004? And wasn't it pants by the end anyway?

Who is buying this stuff? Or are retailers hoping that we will just buy it for each other?

I was wondering exactly the same - it's a complete mystery to me! It's everywhere

Smallsteps88 · 30/11/2020 13:27

Nostalgia sells

Plonque · 30/11/2020 13:29

It's having a resurgence due to this follow up show we're supposed to be getting.
I don't mind, I love friends. It's my go-to for feel good vibes and stuff I don't have to concentrate on.

I guess it’s found a new audience since being on Netflix. I tried to rewatch it but didn’t enjoy it. We used to watch it every morning before school in the early 00s. I think a lot of if it was toned down for that time slot.

M0mmyneedswine · 30/11/2020 13:42

I said the same to dh yesterday, loads of stuff in supermarket friends themed

Sometimesonly · 30/11/2020 13:45

My dd and her friends all really love it and she has asked for Friends pyjamas. She is 10 and I belatedly realised it's not really suitable. Oops.

Sparklingbrook · 30/11/2020 13:45

I wondered this, it really is everywhere. But then I am waiting for a Snoopy sweatshirt to come back into stock at Next. Blush

Hesnotlocal · 30/11/2020 13:46

It's become quite popular with teens now (I think it started a couple of years ago actually). Some of DDs friends were rather obsessed for a while. I suspect it's that age group the merchandise is being aimed at.

As someone who watched every episode when it was first on I find the resurgence quite odd. At the time I thought it was great but having re-watched a few episodes it really hasn't aged well.

doctorhamster · 30/11/2020 13:46

My 12 year old is obsessed with it, as are all her friends. It's bizarre because I really don't think it's aged well!

Welcometonowhere · 30/11/2020 13:46

It’s a bit retro now Smile

I’m old.

Oh no! You must watch it with her and point out all the terrible things. especially Ross. Grin
howitstarted · 30/11/2020 13:48

Gen Z have got into it.

Sparklingbrook · 30/11/2020 13:50

I have a Central Perk mug from the very first time around. Ebay?

howitstarted · 30/11/2020 13:52

Not understanding the love TBH I was the right age for it them first time and wasn't a massive fan (although watched it with my housemates).

Its the same with Harry Potter, been around for ages but still everywhere.

LoseLooseLucy · 30/11/2020 13:52

My 16 year old loves it. She can’t bear Ross, thankfully.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 30/11/2020 13:53

Aged 14 I had a Massive FRIENDS poster. I would have gone all out for the merch had it existed at the time. I do find seeing the FRIENDS stuff everywhere really weird but the demand among kids is obviously there.

Kind of sad that in about 5 years it will be 30 years since I bought that poster and yet the kids of today don't have their "own" equivalent of a huge comedy TV show

Fizbosshoes · 30/11/2020 13:54

My 14 year old DD likes it as do her friends. I think it's making a cone back. I havent found it especially funny either time.

Sparklingbrook · 30/11/2020 13:54

Oh no. Make it stop.

Hoodie

vanillandhoney · 30/11/2020 14:07

It's because it's on Netflix I guess, so accessible to a whole new generation. And that makes me feel really old Grin

IHaveBrilloHair · 30/11/2020 14:09

I got a Friends mug and recipe book for my birthday just last week.
Dd is 19 and has been watching it since birth!

helloxhristmas · 30/11/2020 14:10

My kids love it we watch the runs together. Anything too risqué goes over their heads.

I'm guessing they all get loyalties from the merch.

Sparklingbrook · 30/11/2020 14:12

I think this is a step too far...

No it was pants from about the middle!
satnighttakeaway · 30/11/2020 14:15

Netflix suggested it to me yesterday so I guess it's having a resurgence or maybe it never went away
