I can't sleep because every time I breathe in, I start coughing. Argh Angry
Not a chesty cough but dry and my chest is tight too. Any miracle home remedies?
Not covid, been tested

Cough medicine in hot water ? Or honey ginger and lemon in hot water? Hope you manage to get some sleep !

Onedropbeat · 30/11/2020 01:08

Codeine stops your cough reflex

Behind the pharmacy counter you can ask for cough syrup containing codeine

QueenPaws · 30/11/2020 01:09

@Onedropbeat I've heard that before! I actually take dihydrocodeine anyway so I've had my usual 2 x 30mg which don't appear to have done much

Tight chest makes me wonder if you have winter asthma, in which case you’d need an inhaler on prescription

I hope you feel better soon.

QueenPaws · 30/11/2020 01:15

@AcornAutumn I've previously had pneumonia but this seems more like a cold/viral thing. Started with a sore throat and temperature and then sweating plus a streaming nose and headache. It's grim!

This actually works for me -orange squash with hot water. Sip until the reflex to cough stops.

greenlynx · 30/11/2020 01:20

My usual remedies to get to sleep with cough: warm drink like a cocoa, scarf and bedtime socks/hot water bottle to keep warm, extra pillow for higher position. Also try not to talk and avoid smells as they could provoke coughing.

CarrieMoonbeams · 30/11/2020 01:23

I have mild cough-variant asthma. I get it so infrequently now though that I don't have any medication for it, I just drink a mug of hot water, as hot as I can comfortably drink. That seems to open up my airways.

A spoonful of honey is also often mentioned, but I can't stand honey so I can't vouch for that.

An extra pillow or two helped as well.

Actually just another thought, it couldn't be acid reflux could it? That can also cause a cough, so a couple of Gaviscon might be worth a try too.

Hope you feel better soon.

SoEverybodyDance · 30/11/2020 01:30

Vics vapour rub (or similar) on the soles of your feet. May sound crazy but it really works

QueenPaws · 30/11/2020 01:37

I think I have some vicks... somewhere
No to acid reflux, I basically had every covid symptom but well, no covid. Must be something going round

Spoonful of honey? It's said to coat the back of the throat and alleviate itchy coughs...
QueenPaws · 30/11/2020 01:44

Found the vicks! It's on my feet and chest and I've downed some honey too for good luck
Can't even smell the vicks so I must be full of it

I don't want to alarm you but dry continuos cough, loss of smell, high temperature - you've got the full house of Covid symptoms. I'd ring 111 and ask them if they think you should have another test.
Otherwise I agree Codiene linctus works well.
I also like a hot toddy - whisky, lemon juice, honey, cloves, ginger, hot but not boiling water. If nothing else it helps you sleep. Obs can't take it tonight if you've already had codiene.
Hope you feel better soon.

QueenPaws · 30/11/2020 02:02

@Tavannach I know Sad I've been shielding so the only place I've been is hospital and GP. Feel ok, just a bit wiped out. Sore throat has cleared which is a bonus

Tavannach · 30/11/2020 02:16

I'm glad you're feeling better. Hopefully it'll improve by the morning.

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 30/11/2020 02:32

Robitussin is the only one that works. It's well worth the money

Callcat · 30/11/2020 02:49

I think I'd be tempted to get another covid test.

QueenPaws · 30/11/2020 03:00

Ringing 111 to see what they say, I've got a rash on my arm and neck too

OP posts:
QueenPaws · 30/11/2020 03:55

111 have arranged an appointment with my own GP, they think the test was a false negative as she said my cough sounds "covid like"
See what the GP says in the morning

I hope it goes well. Hope you can get some sleep tonight.

SillyOldMummy · 30/11/2020 04:25

Bless you. Hope you start to feel better soon. Fisherman's Friends and Bronchial Pastilles are my top tips!

Molly333 · 30/11/2020 06:54

Suck a cube of frozen chocolate and drink Lucozade ( lots if sugar i know but also energy)

PTW1234 · 30/11/2020 06:57

Oh I am the same, shamelessly placemarking! I haven’t been tested for covid (rest of the household has, and was neg, I was the last to get symptoms).

Going this morning before I ring the docs , know it will be neg, I just seem to have developed a nasty chest infection Confused

H1978 · 30/11/2020 07:17

Mint in hot water with a spoon of honey. It’s what helped my covid cough. Oh and plenty of vitamin c.

Skipsurvey · 30/11/2020 07:35

i had a cough for weeks, so came on your thread to see the advice..
honey was advised to me
I am still waking but less often
