When does Christmas start and end in your house?

OP posts:
EnglishRose1320 · 29/11/2020 20:35

Starts very gradually from the first of December, the odd Christmas song and movie. Then about the 15th it gets very christmassy, tree and decorations, Christmas crafts etc.... Then it carries on until 12th night, the bit between Christmas and the New Year is my absolute favourite, enjoying time with my family, games and walks, playing with new gifts.

BackforGood · 29/11/2020 20:37

With advent - so today, in terms of Church services.
When my dc were little, this would mean sorting costumes for plays, helping them learn lines etc., etc.
Keeping the diary up to date with who needs to be where, with what, when.

I used to do my Christmas shopping in October 1/2 term, and make my Christmas cake then, so I suppose you could say October, but that would be 2 days then it would stop again.

When I was teaching little people, Christmas planning started in September, and then doing things with the children started after October 1/2 term

OTOH I don't decorate the house or start wrapping presents until about a week before Christmas.

I keep the decs up either until 12th night, or until the day before Spring Terms starts - whichever is sooner.

Christmas Eve to Boxing Day but I have grown up children and it's a bit of a chore these days. I did the whole works when they were small because they were doing it at school.

I have never been a huge Christmas fan though.

1st Dec the Christmas music starts and I don't listen to much else music wise! I'd say similarly around the 15th with the decorations. But will put them up earlier this year. We normally take time off the say before Christmas eve and would normally do something like go to the cinema. By the all of the chores are done so we can just chill.

I really like to make it as fun as possible in between Christmas and New year. But tbh my family (not dh) are not so into that. Eg will often go to boxing day sales. So I do feel a bit alone in this.

What about you op?

MillieMoodle · 29/11/2020 20:41

Usually 1st December or the weekend closest to it, when the decorations go up. Decs come down on 6th Jan or the weekend before it. This year our tree went up last weekend and our other decorations the week before as I wanted it to be a bit more drawn out for the DC. I'm glad that come December everything will already be done, so we can just chill and watch Christmas films at the weekends!

Christmastime4 · 29/11/2020 20:42

Starts around mid November

Actually also at work in a museum we start planning in july/August! Then full on with stuff in December so I do normally feel very Christmassy by then. God I miss going out.

Christmastime4 · 29/11/2020 20:49

Has anyone not got decs up yet?

Usually mid December - most years we go away for the Christmas markets for a weekend, and get the tree sometime during the following week. I do the Christmas shopping in November, but mostly online so it can be delivered (we live abroad). We start preparing the Christmas food the weekend before (some traditional dishes which keep well), and the proper cook starts midday on the 24th. Eating and drinking starts at sunset (we call it Eastern Christmas) and we have a second big celebration on the 25th (called antipodean Christmas). I don’t want to see anyone after that until the 31st... We take the tree down on the 1st as part of “oh shit, back to work”. We’re lucky as both workplaces have a seasonal shutdown for about 10 days.

Salcara · 29/11/2020 20:54

@Christmastime4 no decorations until mid December 😁

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 29/11/2020 20:54

The season starts with the 1. advent, Barbara, Nicolaus, Maria IM, Luzia, holy night, 1st + 2nd day of christmas, epiphany.

Decorations start going up from the 1st of december; tree usually on the morning of the 24th and come down at epihany.

ItsJustASimpleLine · 29/11/2020 20:57

Decorations go up closest weekend to 1st December and usually come down 27/28th Dec. My DDs birthday is 1st Jan so I want it all cleared away by then but also I have always felt by the end of Boxing Day Christmas is over.

We decorated this weekend. The window lights will go up in the next 2 days while the kids are at school so its less stressful for all of us lol!

I do feel I would be sick of the decorations if they went up earlier but generally think each to their own and especially this year of it makes you happy go for it. We all need a little cheer.

donkey86 · 29/11/2020 20:58

Starts mid December with the odd bit of Christmas music and so on. Then the tree and other decs go up on the 18th or 19th. It all goes away on twelfth night, or maybe a day or so before. It’s a shorter period of time than a lot of people go for, but it’s intense! Personally I don’t think I’d feel as Christmassy if I had it going on for a month or more.

Bluntness100 · 29/11/2020 20:59

Well the trees are up, but it will start on the 18gh when my daughter comes home and I finish work for the holidays.

that would be our usual approach.

Not this year, whilst tree not yet up roll on Tuesday things have started way earlier as much I think as a distraction from the constant crap that is Covid. External lights round us started going up from mid November! and you know what they bring a smile to my face everytime I look out the window.

triceratops12 · 29/11/2020 21:02

Starts first weekend in December, ends Boxing Day

Oly4 · 29/11/2020 21:02

Decs go up first week in Dec then put away around the 28th. Lots of outings, and fun things to do in Dec, playing Xmas music and that sort of thing

Melaniaswig · 29/11/2020 21:07

Starts 24th Dec. Ends 27th Dec.

StCharlotte · 29/11/2020 21:09

Normally I put the tree up on the second or third weekend in December. Normally I take the tree down on New Year's Day (even though that's early).

This year we will do it this weekend as someone put a leaflet through the door suggesting a mass switch-on in the street on Saturday evening and saying hi to everyone from the safety of our front gardens with a glass of something. I think it's a lovely idea.

thegrumpallo · 29/11/2020 21:15

@Melaniaswig

Starts 24th Dec. Ends 27th Dec.
YESSSS! my people!!

I absolutely loathe the entire run up to Christmas, and all the accompanying pressure to 'make everything special'.

So start as late as possible and end as soon as possible. Thankfully also have a Jan birthday in the house so that helps alot.

Camomila · 29/11/2020 21:15

Starts 1st December (advent calendar), ends 6th Jan (epiphany/befana).

Don't put the tree up until Mid December though, but start doing cards/crafts etc.
Can't wait for DS1 (4) to come home singing Christmas carols.

Takethewinefromtheswine · 29/11/2020 21:17

Decorations/tree normally go up the sunday after school finishes, but that is too early this year, so probably decs up 23rd. No tree this year due to fucknut kittens. Will all be down before NYE.

hopeishere · 29/11/2020 21:20

Fancy advent calendar will go up on the 1st.

Under duress I will put the tree up on the 12th. I'd prefer to leave it to later. I cannot believe how many people have their tree up in November.

Ends 2nd Jan when we take it down.

I did make the Christmas cake in advance though.

ohtheholidays · 29/11/2020 21:25

The same for us it starts on the 1st of December with the arrival of the Elf on the Shelf and everyone starting they're advent calendars and we start watching Christmas movies(although we've started early this year and were watching The Grinch right now)and we stick the Christmas bedding on everyones beds and we swap over the cushions and throws in the frontroom to our lovely warm fluffy one's.

The DC start making lists in the first week of December of what they want to buy each other and they're friends and they're DDad(we have 5DC)and I take them out one at a time for a nice meal and we get the bits they want to buy.

My DH does the same with them another day so they can buy what they want for me.

We've already bought alot of Christmas presents for our DC,our DGrandson and our extended familys.

Our decorations indoors and outdoors will go up 12 days before Christmas(we stick them all up when our DC are at School,College and Work)and they stay up for the 12 days of Christmas and then we take them down when all 5DC are at school ect.

I'm a bit behind on buying our Christmas food this year but I'll be buying most of it(minus the fresh stuff)next week.

This year will be different for us(like so many others)because normally we'd go to a few Christmas markets and me and my DH would go Christmas shopping in different towns and city's and we'd go to the Pantomine and we'd take our DC to our massive local Christmas market and funfair and the DC would all get spoiled rotten,we'd all drink and eat to much and we'd take the DC Ice skating, but were keeping our fingers crossed for a more normal Christmas next year.

HoneyBee03 · 29/11/2020 21:41

Around mid-December. The tree goes up, the odd christmas film goes on and I start eating more cheese and chocolate. Once we've finished work for the holidays we really get into it.

I always keep the tree up until new year but it all comes to a very abrupt end on new years day!
