When does Christmas start and end in your house?

OP posts:
MrsDThomas · 30/11/2020 06:58

I love the build up to Christmas and my decs go up last weekend of November, come boxing day i feel its over Nd DH and the kids are hugh football fans and there are matches on tv so i feel a bit bleugh come boxing day morning knowing whats on tv.

So I’m hoping for no wind so i can walk the mountains alone!

speakout · 30/11/2020 07:06

1st of December start. I am pagan so lucky to celebrate christmas, Yule and Solstice.
A slow start though, with food, paper snowflakes, making spiced gin, buying odd things for the store cupboard and freezer, watching christmas movies, pod casts, usually get the tree around he 12th.
I love it all.

ExpensivelyDecorated · 30/11/2020 07:08

Gradually from 1st December with advent calenders, Christmas bedding, mugs etc coming out, school events, carol services etc. Tree and decs go up mid Dec (will be 12/13 this year) down on 12th Night or the weekend before schools go back, whichever is first, I'd hate to see in NY in an undecorated house.

I am thinking of decorating early this year, so tree up maybe the 12th of Dec for the tree, down after new year.
Christmas music on Christmas day only, I need to have a sherry in my hand to be able to stand it.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 30/11/2020 07:14

Decorations up first weekend of December and back down just before everyone goes back to school, I’m always sad taking them down!

joystir59 · 30/11/2020 07:17

Christmas starts when I feel it rise in me- it's a feeling not a thing. In terms of outward stuff mid Dec. It definitely ends on 31st Dec. I find Jan very depressing as I really need to hibernate, and the tree has to come down and house be clean and tidy by the first of Jan..

EggysMom · 30/11/2020 07:18

Decs will go up next weekend (first weekend in December) and are likely to come down on 3rd January (weekend after NY). Presents don't come down from the spare room until Christmas Eve.

Our son is autistic with learning difficulties. He quite likes Christmas but wants to play with each new toy as it is opened; so it generally takes three days to open all his presents Grin This year we'll have to manage in two days as we will be visiting rellies (xmas bubble) on the third day.

ReallySpicyCurry · 30/11/2020 07:23

The advent calendars and some winter-but-not-Christmas themed decorations go up on the 1st

Then the tree usually the second weekend in December, though it might be earlier this year.

Decs all come down on Old Year's Night and I clean the absolute shit out of the house so it's fresh and new for January 1st.

Then I buy all the potted forced bulbs I can fit on my windowsill and I start looking at seed catalogues

LJC1234 · 30/11/2020 07:25

From the 1st December! I love Christmas! It's magical BUT once relatives have departed on Boxing Day ( pre covid of course ) the tree is down and I'm done with it! I love getting the house back to normal as much as I love putting decorations up 😂😂

polarisation · 30/11/2020 07:26

We get the tree when DH is finished work for the school holidays, so usually around the 22nd. We're Catholic so the Christmas season runs liturgically from Christmas Day until Candlemas on the 2nd of February, and then we take everything down. Much to the bemusement of our neighbours Grin

merlotormalbec · 30/11/2020 07:28

Christmas has come early this year and we've put the tree up and already started watching Christmas films and episodes. I love it and we're hosting for the first time this year so I'm extra excited.

WitchesSpelleas · 30/11/2020 07:32

The tree will go up the weekend before Christmas and come down after New Year.

Labobo · 30/11/2020 07:34

Starts 1st December usually, though a bit earlier this year due to lockdown boredom and early advent.
1st Dec the puddings and cakes get made, the wreath goes on the door. Then gradually other decs appear - fairy lights up the stairs, poinsettias, mistletoe, then mid December the tree and full decorations.

Ends 1st Jan. DH likes to keep decs up until 12th night but I like to clear them by 2nd and bring in the signs of spring - potted daffs and hyacinths and lots of clean, clear, empty space.

instanthistoryy · 30/11/2020 07:35

Usually starts with advent, this year it started a few days ago. We start doing Christmas crafts, make gingerbread houses, walk/drive around to spot Christmas lights. Visit garden centres to see their displays and start feeling festive.

I set up a hot chocolate station with marshmallows, candy canes and chocolate coins and we have one every few days. We usually have a few prenooked days out in December to meet Father Christmas, go ice skating etc.

Our decorations start going up now but our main ones go up with 3 weeks to go though so this coming weekend. We have a real tree and I can't stand it all being up for too long, it comes down the day after Boxing Day as I'm over it by then.

islockdownoveryet · 30/11/2020 07:40

You could say it started yesterday watching Christmas films .
But I'd say this week , I'll start wrapping presents / cards .
I'll do my food shopping list and plan what I'm doing each weekend in the run up to Christmas.
This weekend I'll decorate and enjoy Christmas music/ films / treats .
My dc are teens / early 20s but still want a stocking but my eldest doesn't want a advent calendar Grin.
This time last week I was feeling a bit blue about the restrictions but we'll still enjoy Christmas.

islockdownoveryet · 30/11/2020 07:41

Forgot to say ends on the 2nd January I take everything down .

StillMedusa · 30/11/2020 07:46

Decorations up somewhere between the 14th and 20th (I like to leave it til I have broken up from school but dh usually gets the decs out before)
Down on 28th December ! I love the lights and tree but can't bear the clutter and after Xmas day I just want my house tidy again. I LOVE the tidy up day!

Presents are usually bought at half term and I'm all wrapped except for a couple... I have to be organised as there are a lot of us! I always host and really enjoy it... for a couple of days Grin

Malin52 · 30/11/2020 07:47

Maybe on 24th December I'll drink too much Baileys and then the following day we may eat too much and drink too much on the beach but other that that it doesn't start.

No decorations. No gifts. Definitely no Xmas music. Xmas cards get read and smiled at and binned immediately. Perfect for us!

nosswith · 30/11/2020 08:19

Starts yesterday when decorations went up, ends 5th January when they come down. Festive food is only Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Dogsaresomucheasier · 30/11/2020 08:29

Wreath goes on the door first December, tree goes up weekend of last week at school, all down and put away before my birthday in early Jan.

CountFosco · 30/11/2020 08:50

Christmas cake baked in half term. Shopping done last week of November onwards. Kid's advent calendar out Dec and they do a Christmas activity from that (paperchains, writing cards, making gingerbread etc) each day in December. The decorations go up slowly from the paper snowflakes they make the first week till Christmas Eve when DH and I stay up late putting up the final decorations. Tree goes up the weekend before Christmas.

The decorations stay up into January (officially 12th night but really set by when the tree is collected for recycling), can't imagine celebrating Hogmanay without decorations, for me it's more important than Christmas. Love the gap between Christmas and New Year chilling out and relaxing with the family, far more fun than the frenzy of children's activities earlier in December.

prettygirlincrimsonrose · 30/11/2020 10:40

As kids we started with advent calendars on the 1st and mum got out a box of Christmas books (I loved coming home from school on the 1st to reread books that were far too young for me!). We went to a Christmas tree festival and bought the radio times, and made cards and paper chains during December. We often used to leave decorating the tree to Christmas Eve (inspired by Lucy and Tom's Christmas).

When it was just me and DH it was usually first or second weekend in December with mulled wine and songs or a Christmas film. Now DS is starting to understand and get excited by Christmas trees, we're planning to go with first weekend in December. His birthday's at the start of the month so we expect as he gets older we'll make a fuss of that first, and then start decorating for Christmas and do some Christmassy things over the evenings/weekends in December. And we've always taken everything down on 5th/6th January.

GrannyWeatherwaxsBroomstick · 30/11/2020 11:09

Christmas starts as soon as I can persuade DH to help me get the decorations out and ends on twelfth night. Then I complain how dull the house looks for a month before I start decorating for Valentines Day 😁

MamTDM · 30/11/2020 11:26

This will out me completely to anyone who knows me, but Christmas starts here when we receive a card from Sue and Jeff, whom we do not know, addressed to a couple who moved out of this house well over 20 years ago. We've been here 14 years and get a card every year without fail: I opened the first one to look for a return address after all our neighbours said they didn't remember the recipients, but there wasn't one. When they kept coming year after year, I mentioned it on FB in case someone in the area knew them, and their cards have gained cult status over the years Grin We've made up all manner of intricate back-stories for these people and we don't put our decorations up until their card has come.
