When does Christmas start and end in your house?

Officially, from today - the first Sunday of Advent.🎄🎄🎄

We light the first advent candle, turn on the tree lights, and decorate the front room window.

Melaniaswig · 29/11/2020 21:47

@thegrumpallo yay! A likeminded peep. The tree goes up Christmas eve and comes down 27th. It makes it more special to know it’s not sat there for several weeks.

I also don’t like piles of presents being sat in the lounge after Christmas day. We have a January birthday in our house so I like Christmas to be over with for that.

stargirl1701 · 29/11/2020 21:47

It starts on Christmas Eve and ends on Twelfth Night.

However, we do keep the crib out until Candlemas.

About 10am on the 25th December till about 10pm on the same day.

Although we do have advent calendars.

Ilovesausages · 29/11/2020 21:50

Starting early this year. I’ve done all my shopping. Got a few decorations up. Doing tree next weekend. Going to open some Christmas biscuits as we do the tree.

Icanflyhigh · 29/11/2020 21:53

Usually very slowly from first weekend in December and everything back in the box and away by 4th January

CherryPavlova · 29/11/2020 21:56

It starts on the first Sunday of Advent when we light the first candle on the wreath and put the crib out (no baby, obviously).
The weekend before Christmas the other decorations go up.
Christmas Eve really signals the opening of Christmas for us with the village nativity/crib service. As soon as a child sings the first verse of Once in Royal, it suddenly feels like Christmas. It goes on in a very traditional way with set events until the Epiphany. That’s usually the last drinks party and decorations down.
Technically, it goes on until the feast of the Baptism a week later, but I think most people have had enough by then.

I've been shopping since September but in terms of it officially being Christmastime....we started Friday when the outdoor lights were put out. Yesterday the kids started on their cards. Today we did baking to mail to a relative. The advent calendars are on the fireplace ready for Tuesday. I will bring out the Christmas books for December 1st. We will set up the tree next weekend as it's only 3 weekends to Christmas Brew

FixItUpChappie · 29/11/2020 21:58

Christmas ends Jan 1 in our house

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 29/11/2020 22:01

Tree & decs up 20th Dec, all down 1st Jan

MaverickDanger · 29/11/2020 22:02

Normally decorations go up around 10th December ish & stay up until first weekend in Jan.

This year, I’m putting them up on Tuesday & going to watch tons of Christmas films & music to get in the spirit.

I’m due mid December so at least want them up a bit earlier, god knows when/if we’ll get round to taking them down with a newborn Grin

GloriaDelgado · 29/11/2020 22:04

December - not a day sooner.

We keep everything up until twelfth night but only as a tradition. I’m itching to clear it all away by 2nd Jan.

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 29/11/2020 22:06

Oh and it ends on Twelfth Night.

Christmastime4 · 29/11/2020 22:08

Do those with kids put them up sooner?

DD will help me do the tree when she gets home from university after 19th December. It comes down on 1st Jan. I'm not a huge fan of Christmas TBH, and if I started with everything now I would be bored of it all by Christmas Day.

I usually listen to the radio while WFH, but will switch to Spotify this week to avoid the same old Christmas songs that they have been churning out for the last 45 years or so.

BogRollBOGOF · 29/11/2020 22:16

Building up gradually through December. Decorations away around 6th Jan. The world feels much bleaker and colder when all the Christmas lights are switched off.

I've got the outside lights up. Not ready for the indoor decorations yet and will pace them through December as there there are few enough festivities this year and I don't want to peak too early.

Ginfordinner · 29/11/2020 22:20

My living room feels lighter, less cluttered and airier when the tree gets packed away.

Covidasaurus · 29/11/2020 22:26

1st Sunday of advent here (so today) FULL ON until Boxing Day. Tree and decks down on Boxing Day.

Ismellphantoms · 29/11/2020 22:36

Christmas Eve to New Year's Day. I've had enough of everything including decorations y then.

RedToothBrush · 29/11/2020 22:49

Usually 1st Dec. With decorations up the first weekend in Dec.

However due to how the dates fall this year i did the decorating earlier in the week as i didn't want to lose a week plus we've been crazy busy this weekend with other things we needed to get done around the house.

1st December is start of advent calendar. And i sometimes do Christmas jumpers as a gift as theres no point in getting one on Christmas day as you don't have any time to wear it!

Christmas Eve ive started doing new PJs for DS.

Then the main event.

Christmas finishes strictly before 12th night.

JustCallMeGriffin · 29/11/2020 22:54

1st December classic FM becomes the station of choice in he house, 1st Saturday in December tree goes up and we do our annual Reindeer Run for charity then things just gradually build to Christmas Eve when we start proper celebrations. Festivities end on Boxing Day, decorations come down in time for 12th night.

I'm really not a fan of Christmas, but I want my girls to look back on Christmas as being a family time filled with smiles so that's what I aim for...without breaking the bank!

elQuintoConyo · 29/11/2020 22:55

Up next weekend, Saturday tree, Sunday other stuff. They stay up until 6th as we celebrate epicphany.

I've already wrapped some gifts and squirreled them away, posted everything I needed to last Friday.

Angel2702 · 29/11/2020 22:57

Weekend before the first December and ends Boxing Day. Christmas Night we take down as much as we can no replace with birthday decorations for my son’s birthday and everything comes down on 27th so we can have a deep clean and sort out before back to work / school.

PontiacBandit · 29/11/2020 22:59

15th- 27th/28th December. I like a deep clean before NYE.

HelloDoris · 29/11/2020 23:35

Advent calenders and cards from the 1st December. The tree and other decorations don't go up till after the 13th and come down on 12th night.
