Do other people have quiet times in their head or is their brain always talking?

Do you ever have silence in your head? I never do. My head voice is constantly talking. Shite mostly. It often interrupts conversations I’m having with people and I have to concentrate really hard to “hear”what the other person is saying. I really wish I could switch it off sometimes. I take hours to fall asleep every night because my brain is still going. Is that what everyone else has or do you have quiet sometimes?

I've never had a quiet moment in my head, not that I can remember, anyway. Sometimes conversations I'm playing out between me and someone else that I haven't had yet. More usually it's just constant random dialogue about nothing. Now I'm wondering what it would feel like to have complete silence in my head...

madcatladyforever · 28/11/2020 23:42

Constant row.

haircutsRus · 28/11/2020 23:43

My DH recently surprised DD and me by saying that he doesn't have any kind of internal monologue at all.

Explains a lot.

BogRollBOGOF · 28/11/2020 23:44

Singing, chuntering along.
I like MN for the variety of noise it puts into my head Grin

You should find Eckhart Tolle on YouTube. He makes loads of sense about this subject.

Yes. Lots of this here too.

I don't know about "talking@ but I am always thinking. Even when I drift off to sleep my thoughts are running in the background and then merge with my dreams.

Nothowiexpected · 28/11/2020 23:45

Oh mine is awful, singing, arguing, random thoughts, bad ideas, oh my god, drives me nuts

BogRollBOGOF · 28/11/2020 23:46

DS1 has a very active interior monologue... he was worrued that his teachers would tell him off for talking inside his head when the class were told to be quiet Grin

I can’t even imagine what that’s like. So how does he think if his brain doesn’t talk? If he was working out some sums would he not work it out on his head?

It never shuts up. I'm a maladaptive day dreamer too

I wind myself up and get upset over imagined scenarios in my head

I was going to say read ‘The Power of Now’ by Eckhart Tolle.

Me too. I hate it. I've always suffered from insomnia and I constantly complain I don't know how people switch their brain off.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 28/11/2020 23:52

Never bloody stops. Gives a constant narration. Rethinks and replays long ago conversations, situations. States what should have been said/done. Reminds me of things I don't want to be reminded of if I can't sleep. So annoying.

ImNotCutOutForThis · 28/11/2020 23:53

Yes I have predicted convos of what I'll say to people and what I think they will say.

I never ever ever unwind my Brian.

ImNotCutOutForThis · 28/11/2020 23:53

Ffs brain not brian

Omg I do this!!!

Doesn't it suck when the response isn't the one in your head

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 29/11/2020 00:03

Constant internal monologue, so annoying. I find it very hard to just relax too, I'm always fiddling, playing online, singing. Don't even sleep well and dream a lot of shite too.

Smallsteps88 · 29/11/2020 00:05

Oh you must never unwind a Brian! Brian’s like to be wound tightly at all times Grin

I’m so glad everyone else is the same as me. Why do we have such nonsense and chaos in our heads? Surely evolution should have worked out a way for us to have some peace now and again?

CarolEffingBaskin · 29/11/2020 00:07

I don’t really have an internal monologue either. Sometimes, if I’m thinking about what to say to somebody/how to word something, but not as standard.

I’ve recently come to the realisation that this is because my brain can only make one noise at once, and there is always a song in my head. Always. I can’t talk because I’m already busy listening to music Grin

NoBloodyHolly · 29/11/2020 00:07

My brain is exactly like yours. I thought that was normal but it turns out I have ADHD.

My husband says his brain is silent most of the time. I can’t even begin to imagine what that’s like.

Smallsteps88 · 29/11/2020 00:10

Grin yes, usually music in my head too. Or other languages that I only half know Hmm
