Best veggie sausages

It's for a sausage casserole so I dont want them to fall apart. One friend is vegetarian so if I use veggie sausages I only need to make 1 meal.

I love the Linda McCartney ones and the cauldron ones. I'm going against the grain here, but I hated the Richmond ones, they had a very unpleasant texture and taste, the Heck ones tasted better but had a similar weird texture.

inappropriateraspberry · 25/11/2020 09:37

I don't get the love for Linda McCartney sausages. I find them dry and cardboardy!

FamilyOfAliens · 25/11/2020 09:38

I don’t think you’d want to be tricking your guests into eating something they’re not.

OP have you got your heart set on a sausage casserole for your guests or could you make a dish where the vegetables are the star of the show, with no need for meat substitutes? Unless you have meat-eating guests who would object to a dish with no meat.

Where does it say the op is planning on pretending they’re meat sausages?

pressedclay · 25/11/2020 09:41

I hate the Linda McCartney ones too salty and gristly!

ClinkeyMonkey · 25/11/2020 09:42

If your friend likes a bit of spice, Tesco do fabulous chorizo style sausages. Depends what the base of the casserole is I guess. I would recommend the Richmond ones if they prefer something quite realistic. The first time we had them, I had to double check the pack as I thought I'd lifted real sausages by mistake. DP won't touch them because of this!

Whatthebloodyell · 25/11/2020 09:42

Definitely not the Linda McCartney ones in a casserole. They are the least sausagey ones. I always use quorn or cauldron in a casserole.

I didn’t say the OP was planning to trick her guests.

@BuffaloCauliflower said the Richmond sausages could trick a meat-eater though, and I was replying to their post.

ClinkeyMonkey · 25/11/2020 09:45

Linda McCartney sausages are sadness on a fork. They changed the previously decent recipe a few years ago which seemed to involve removing all the flavour.

Beamur · 25/11/2020 09:45

Don't get the vegan mushroomy ones - they have a bitter aftertaste.
Veggie sausages generally keep together well.

Hopingtobeamum · 25/11/2020 09:47

My DSCs love the Richmond ones, they're particular, have tried just about every veggie sausage under the sun so I'd trust their recommendation

inappropriateraspberry · 25/11/2020 09:48

Oh, and the Richmond ones make a great sausage sandwich! 🥪

BuffaloCauliflower · 25/11/2020 09:48

@FamilyOfAliens I wasn’t suggesting actually tricking anyone or not telling them what they were eating. I meant they are so convincing as sausages that they COULD. Many of the veggie sausages are clearly veggie and not very real sausagey. The Richmond ones are convincing as normal sausages. Speaking as a vegetarian anyway.

hazelnutlatte · 25/11/2020 09:57

Richmond ones or naked glory if you want sausages that taste meat like. I quite like the Linda McCartney sausages but they don't taste like meat sausages at all.
Quorn are the worst in my opinion - very bland and a bit spongey

Oh I absolutely agree they’re very like meat sausages. But for me, not in a good way Grin

OrganTransplant123 · 25/11/2020 11:05

I like Cauldron ones. Linda McCartney ones are awful, unless they’ve changed the recipe since I last had one. Quorn are very flabby and tasteless. I tried the Richmond ones last night. They’d be good for meat eaters but they were too meatlike for me.

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 25/11/2020 11:21

Richmond. I wouldn't buy any other sausages now tbh.

The M&S plant kitchen soysauges were good as well but not sure if they still make those.

BlackeyedSusan · 25/11/2020 11:23

Linda mc cartney are not the quorn type. Quorn makes dd sick.

I had the same reaction when I first tried them 😂. I had to get DP to double check the packaging for me because I thought I was going crazy.
DitherFlicker · 25/11/2020 11:38

Would go for Cauldron Lincolnshire. They have enough substance and depth of flavour to hold up in a casserole. Richmond and many of the other Johnny-come-lately products, just mimic the taste of super-cheap low quality real sausages - even if I ate meat, I wouldn't bother with them.

HighHeelBoots · 25/11/2020 12:39

I'm planning on giving them dog food and pretending it's steakHmm

I want something I can throw together and transport easily. I have an instant pot and there is a nice sausage casserole recipe
I will cook the sausages separately and then chop and throw in

ThatDamnScientist · 25/11/2020 12:45

I don't know if they fall apart in sauces but dd2 who is the fussiest eater ever will happily eat Linda McCartney veggie sausages.

sofiaaaaaa · 25/11/2020 12:45

I like the M&S own brand veggie sausages. They’re not supposed to taste like meat, I think it’s a mushroom/cheese/quinoa blend.

RedRosie · 25/11/2020 12:45

Different veggie sausages for different purposes I'd say. Cauldron are really good in casserole-type dishes.
