What is your secret? =p

Light hearted thread.

I am 31 and with more time on my hands due to lockdown started to Introduce new skincare to my daily routine, including vitamin C, retinol and BHA.

Got me thinking of whether those who have aged well physically have had a good regime (I.e skincare, diet, spf, exercise, water etc) or whether it has been mainly down to genetics.

I have also noticed my teeth are yellowing from too much coffee so I need to take more care and get them whitened !

Wrinkles are now cropping up and I have dark eye circles!

I also have noticed as I've got older I gain weight so much quicker, up until I was 25 I physically couldn't PUT ON weight and was stuck at 7 stone. I definately don't have that problem now and I need to kick my bum and get back to running!

I'm aging well I think. 46 and could pass for 35. I've always put it down to drinking very little alcohol. I do drink, but rarely more than a pint. I had one bottle of beer this week, but nothing else since lockdown started.

Good things to do are....super fruits like raspberries and blueberries, plenty of water (I have a full glass before the one coffee if the day and then two full water bottles per day), good skincare including coconut oil and regular exercise.

Don't have children, pregnancy and the lack of sleep in early childhood ages you especially after 30.

I did a diet that took out all carbs and sugar and I genuinely looked about 10 years younger on it. But I bloody love carbs so they won Grin

Genetics plays a big part. I've not looked after myself this year but my skin is still clear and bright. I can't take credit for it!

Be careful using too many products, sometimes less is more. Make sure you're using an SPF, even in the winter. I doubt you need your teeth whitening, just a decent toothpaste and regular use.

Im 46 and i look ok. I’m healthy, non smoker, eat well. Run a lot, and the wind and cold weather has given me more wrinkles. I love Superdrug hyaluronic acid and Loreal moisturisers. Im out doing something every day so need to look after my skin

Children have not done my any favours, pregnancy and the baby phases particularly- they stole my youth and metabolism!

Also prematurely greying, box dye no longer covers it and with hairdressers closed there's not many options.

I'm not what anyone would call attractive or glamorous but people are often surprised when they learn my age (50).

In my case, I think it's mostly down to being far more fit and active, generally having a younger outlook, than they expect from someone my age. E.g. for my 50th birthday (if it had happened this year!) a wake boarding party was planned.

I think there's a very narrow window, late 30s, early 40s when perception age is about how you look. After that it's about how you move and what you do. E.g I have runner friends in their 60s, their faces perhaps don't look that young but see them trot up a flight of stairs and you'd assume they must be 40 max.

In terms of looking young rfacially, I'd say very boring simple things that the skin care industry makes no money from. Don't smoke, drink lots of water, sleep well, be kind/happy/let things go, enjoy life, stay out of the midday sun.

Got to avoid smoking, alcohol. Eat fruit, veg. Avoid too much sugar and caffeine. Regular exercise and fresh air. Avoid too much sun

55 now and I don't think I'm doing too badly, few wrinkles appearing now though. I eat healthy everyday and the only sugar I really have is in my tea (apart from the odd treat here and there).

Teeth make a huge difference- straighten them if they’re starting to crowd, cap or veneer them if needed, natural looking whitening - takes five years off! Sadly ruinously expensive though...

I’ve broken all those rules by the way and at 46 it has definitely caught up with me

More so: my mum has done none of the above but is wrinkly far beyond what she should be: she’s been a sugar addict all her life

My aunt was a big fagger but non sweet tooth and the difference is remarkable

I think genetics plays a huge part - I am 65 and when I went for my flu jab, the nurse asked if I had come on the wrong day as I look nowhere near that age! That is despite drinking like a fish, as my family have always done, not doing much in the way of exercise and eating what I want to. I am slightly overweight but I don't care! My father kept his dark hair and youthful complexion until he died at 86, my mother always looked young and glamorous. Luck of the draw, I think.

DH does nothing at all. He looks young for his age (nearly 50), looks 40.

Think it's genetics as he's done all sorts of things.

People often think I'm younger, I'm 40. I don't know whether I really have aged well though. I'm slim and like to dress in my own style, not fashionably. I drink and smoke. I have quite good radiant skin and use lots of moisturiser. I have seen lots of lines appearing around my eyes the past few years, though... I don't really know whether it all matters, as I know lots of attractive people who don't look young as such, they just have this great energy. I prefer to aim for that. Sometimes I pull my face upwards in the mirror though and imagine a facelift achieving the same effect Grin

I am 50 and could pass for 45. No ''secret'' but i've never smoked, haven't seen a ray of sunshine in 30 years :-(, love clothes and love fashion so always tried to stay slim. Kept my hair past my shoulders and resisted a nice laydeeeez doooo. Worn spf 15 every day since I was 20. Only ever used cheap moisturisers but I do slather on the moisturiser. Loads of avocados and nuts and fish. Not a vegetarian but don't eat much meat. Pescatarian really.

I'm mid 50s and people who don't know that are often surprised.
I'm a little overweight, but interestingly, when I lost 3+ stone a couple of years ago, I began to look my age. I've regained some of that weight recently (thanks, Covid) but my face looks better for it.

My skincare regime has always been a bit shite, so I honestly put it down to good genes. Both my parents always looked young for their years - my dad often got mistaken for my brother and mother's skin complexion was exquisite, even when in her 70s/80s. She always put it down to rinsing with cold water and Nivea. I just think she was lucky (and she never let her face tan).

The other thing is how you dress/do your hair. I've been looking at photos of my grandmother recently when she was my age, and she had permed, "set" hair, tweed dresses, thick stockings and sensible brogues. We most of us dress much more stylishly nowadays. Look at the likes of Joan Collins (87), Gloria Hunniford (80), Felicity Kendall (74) and Lulu (72). (I'm talking about their dress-sense, not whether or not they've had surgery/fillers).

Agree about oily skin too, as previous poster. Some people put stuff on it to make it look all dry - urgh, no! Oily skin looks way younger. I leave it all oily in the morning and don't wash it away. Seems to keep it looking fresh. I wash it before bed though and loads of Aveeno.

I have done bugger all so I think it is just good luck, I am often mistaken for being in my late 40s (I am late 50s) and I have done everything you are not supposed to do in terms of anti-aging. (I am a non-smoker though and have never smoked, I also drink very little alcohol. I was into lots of outdoor sport in my teens/20s). I don't wear much any make-up either and I am sure that has helped my skin.

I dont know if i aged well or not. My figure looks middle aged and i am creaky.
But oily skin and hair is working for me in my 40s
