What is your secret? =p

Light hearted thread.

I am 31 and with more time on my hands due to lockdown started to Introduce new skincare to my daily routine, including vitamin C, retinol and BHA.

Got me thinking of whether those who have aged well physically have had a good regime (I.e skincare, diet, spf, exercise, water etc) or whether it has been mainly down to genetics.

I have also noticed my teeth are yellowing from too much coffee so I need to take more care and get them whitened !

Wrinkles are now cropping up and I have dark eye circles!

I also have noticed as I've got older I gain weight so much quicker, up until I was 25 I physically couldn't PUT ON weight and was stuck at 7 stone. I definately don't have that problem now and I need to kick my bum and get back to running!

Genetics definitely. My mum looks like her friends who are in their 70s and she's 92. People are always surprised I'm in my 60s (I love it, haven't got much else going for me!). AIso I am product phobic and have never used anything on my face apart from soap and cold water and only shampoo my hair every ten days.

AlinaSquareQueen · 22/11/2020 21:26

I think it’s mainly down to genetics.

I’m 59 and people are always shocked when I tell them that. I could probably pass for about 53-54. I’m slightly overweight too, so being slim doesn’t necessarily help with looking younger.

My DM is 84 but looks 74 and my 25-year-old DS gets asked for ID a lot - he looks about 17! I told him, it might be annoying now, but you’ll appreciate inheriting my genes when you’re older.

Ginfordinner · 22/11/2020 21:27

Never smoked
Drink in moderation
Happy marriage + enjoyable part time job + mortgage free = low stress life
Eat a balanced diet
Stay hydrated
Exercise
Worn moisturiser since age 15
Regular hair cut and colour every 5 – 6 weeks
Never been overweight, although I have to eat less than I did 20 years ago to maintain my weight
Only one DC
Tidy eyebrows

I’m 62 and reasonably fit. Also, less is more when it comes to wearing make up.

Loved life. Drank, smoked (gave up when I had kids), lots of parties and meals out, good marriage, good friends, lovely family, Botox.

RettyPriddle · 22/11/2020 21:34

Oh and lots of exercise and a dog

IRememberSoIDo · 22/11/2020 21:39

I think genetics play a huge part in it. Neither of my parents remotely look their ages and so far people always assume I'm younger than I am. I love it outside work but hate it in work as I am a manager but people seem to assume I'm a lot younger when they first meet me. That said my mother's sister looks about twenty years older than my mum when she's actually 18 months younger. The two big differences were my mum liked the sun when on holidays or a sunny day whereas my aunty lived on sun beds and also has smoked at least 20 a day for 50 years plus.

BogRollBOGOF · 22/11/2020 21:49

Good genes, we're quite good at looking a good decade younger in my family.

I had a child busfare at 29- just asked for a single ticket and realised why it was cheap when I sat diwn. At least my bump wasn't showing... if I was a teenager, I should have shown a student card anyway! Regularly IDed if I buy alcohol outside of the weeks shop, had my gin confiscated at the till when I didn't have my ID at 37, still IDed at 39. Assistants normally do a lot of puzzled looking up and down at my face and early 80s DoB, and friends in their early 20s forget I'm old enougn to be their mother.

I have a small build, particularly in the top half, quite a small, round face.
Running and yoga, good for muscle tone and posture. Hunching and shuffling are incredibly aging.
Got lucky with a decent set of straight teeth. Thick hair, clear skin. I have a very natural, low maintainence style. Not the best on suncream but do use it for regular exposure to the sun.
I wear clothes that suit me rather than fashion lead.
My build has never changed significantly other than the CS overhang which is well hidden in clothes.
Light drinker.
Never smoked/ did drugs
Reasonable diet
Generally a young, sunny disposition... until 2020 got going anyway. Grin

I read the headline as "haven't" and had lots of great tips and advice...sorry, can't help much.

AriesTheRam · 22/11/2020 21:59

Im 40 and look around 34.I've smoked on and off since I was 15 but not for the last 7 years.I always use good skincare.Vit C serum, estee Lauder advanced repair serum, face masks etc and moisturise twice daily.I also have botox on my forehead so have no lines there.

MadCatLady71 · 22/11/2020 22:13

Genetics and sun exposure count for 90% of how your skin will look as you age. The single most important product you need to apply every day, even in winter, is SPF 50 full spectrum sunscreen.

High strength retinol and Vitamin C, if you can tolerate them, will make a difference over time, and daily use of a BHA or AHA is a good idea, too. But really, unless you avoid the sun it is all a waste of money.

Thewoodfromthetrees · 22/11/2020 22:22

A little sun in moderation is healthy and healing for the skin..plus vitamin d.

Thewoodfromthetrees · 22/11/2020 22:23

Also, taking care of your health, chronic illness will ages rapidly

LaVitaPuoEsserePiuBella · 22/11/2020 22:26

I'm also about to turn fifty but people who don't know me think that I am early 40s, max.
Good genes - both parents still look great into their 70s
Yoga, pilates, walking, swimming - do something every day
Never eat processed food - you couldn't pay me to eat KFC etc 🤢
Fresh air
Long hair, still really thick
I don't use expensive face creams - just Liz Earle, and very minimal makeup
Avoid toxic people and "keeping up with the Joneses", as well as SM
Good sleep
Water, water, water
Having fun as much as possible

Thewoodfromthetrees · 22/11/2020 22:29

Agreed with the having as much fun as possible....inner joy is a healer and makes you age well

ChristmasSlayRide · 22/11/2020 22:29

I'm 57 but could pass for 22, easily.

I keep busy, sleep on fresh bedding every night and never use the same towel twice.

MrsD28 · 22/11/2020 23:01

I am in my late 30s, but have always looked at least 5 years younger than my age. I looked as if I was in my teens into my mid-twenties, and was still getting ID-ed in my late twenties / early thirties (though I have definitely started to look older since having two DC in my mid-thirties).

I think that face shape plays a big role - I have what I think is perceived as a "young" face - quite round with full high cheeks. Have also always had good skin - I moisturise with SPF every day, but don't wear make up or use any other products. I am neither slim nor overweight, but I have quite a slim upper body with a small bust so I am still quite perky even after two DC. Pretty healthy lifestyle overall - I have never smoked, don't really drink alcohol, no caffeine, no junk food (though plenty of chocolate), never taken drugs, reasonably active though by no means super fit.

I don’t know if this is serious or not Grin
Ginfordinner · 22/11/2020 23:13

I also have small boobs Sad

grassisjeweled · 22/11/2020 23:15

I'm 39 in February and look probably aged 32/33.

I've :

Not drunk to excess
Never smoked
Eaten REALLY well. Very little processed foods.
Had an 'easy' life. Privileged etc.

I noticed when I lost 3 stone 5 years ago that it really made me look younger, so I work hard to keep it off. I'm 5'5 and just under 10 stone.

grassisjeweled · 22/11/2020 23:17

Oh god yes, water. I drink at least 2 litres per day

MrsBungle · 22/11/2020 23:21

Genetics. I reckon I look my age. DH was 50 this year and many people are shocked to hear it. They reckon he’s late 30s. He’s always looked young, baby-faced as a teenager. His mum looks younger as does his sister. He used to smoke and drinks and doesn’t do skin care. He does keep fit and has been vegetarian for 30 years but it still seems purely genetics.

Craftycorvid · 22/11/2020 23:22

I don’t know if I look younger than I am, exactly, but I look ok for my age. I put it down to: trick genetics (both DM and Ddad had great skin well into later life); having been a chubby bird for most of my adult life, I’m now a slimmer one because menopause seems to have done me an unexpected favour that way; it does help that I can afford to dress well. Also, exercise, stopped drinking a few years ago, have never smoked (except when seriously blootered).

Temporary1234 · 22/11/2020 23:25

I’m 30 and I look like a 45 yeSr old.

My secret is, not drinking enough water. Too much sugar. Too little sleep and no time to do my hair let alone a full skin care regime.

I credit my 2 under 2 for sucking the beauty out of my once very pretty face.

So long
