If you have physically aged well.. to ask...

What is your secret? =p

Light hearted thread.

I am 31 and with more time on my hands due to lockdown started to Introduce new skincare to my daily routine, including vitamin C, retinol and BHA.

Got me thinking of whether those who have aged well physically have had a good regime (I.e skincare, diet, spf, exercise, water etc) or whether it has been mainly down to genetics.

I have also noticed my teeth are yellowing from too much coffee so I need to take more care and get them whitened !

Wrinkles are now cropping up and I have dark eye circles!

I also have noticed as I've got older I gain weight so much quicker, up until I was 25 I physically couldn't PUT ON weight and was stuck at 7 stone. I definately don't have that problem now and I need to kick my bum and get back to running!

Genetics. My mother had beautiful skin and hair into old age. She smoked and drank and lived in the tropics in the days before sun protection. She had oily, thick skin that didn't wrinkle.
I inherited my father's skin and hair, fine and dry. I have aged badly.

lazylinguist · 22/11/2020 19:48

Genes and being slightly overweight, which makes your face look younger. Personally I'd rather be slimmer and look older though. Grin

CarpeVitam · 22/11/2020 19:49

Moisturise, moisturise and moisturise. 5-6 times a day for me 😀

I think it is mostly genetic. My dad looks ten years younger than my mom even though he is older and has the same lifestyle

gindinner · 22/11/2020 19:50

This thread is going to go quite badly, just like similar before. People will be told they look old, some will come on and say it's better to be overweight. There will be a lot of upset. Just don't post a pic of yourself, unless you're feeling quite thick skinned. In which case I'm sure you still look 25

Thewoodfromthetrees · 22/11/2020 19:51

That said, lower stress levels, a clean diet, lots of water, exercise, a good night's rest and keeping your skin moist helps

DappledThings · 22/11/2020 19:53

I have no idea if I'm ageing well or not. I'm 41 and have no idea how old I look to other people. It's not something that has ever crossed my mind to ponder.

lynsey91 · 22/11/2020 19:55

I think genetics play a very big part. I am 66 and people tell me that I look about early 50's. I honestly have almost no wrinkles. My mum and dad both look young for their ages.

I always had really oily/greasy skin (it still is a bit) and I hated it but I do think that has contributed to looking younger.

I have never smoked (not even 1 puff of a cigarette), have never sunbathed (mainly because I find it so boring) but I also never wear sunscreen.

I don't have children and I think that has made a difference too

Thewoodfromthetrees · 22/11/2020 19:55

If you look young for your age people will generally comment

frontlegsofacow · 22/11/2020 19:56

I drink like a fish, smoked for 10 years, I could drink more water, I eat well, I have a super high stress job, I often get surprised looks when I say my age or people realise I have an adult daughter. It must be genetics but as all the women in my family dropped down dead early doors with brain haemorrhages I don't know.

notacooldad · 22/11/2020 19:56

I'm looking ok.
I have had a good skin regime since my teens.
I've always worn sun screen.
Genetics play. Huge part. My mum and dad look great for their 70's
Attitude to life I think is important. Be willing to try new things, listen to new things, keep up to date with contemporary culture.
I keep my hair below shoulder length but in great condition. I use olaplex and have regular salon appointments ( up until this year)
Exercise is important. I do cardio, strength and flexibility and core.
I keep up with make up trends but not obsesively so. I don't want to look like I'm stuck in a time warp.
I've never smoked. I don't drink much but do like an odd beer now and then.
I'm 55

Sarahandco · 22/11/2020 20:08

Every time I see someone who is hailed as looking really good for their age, I think to myself, that is promising they are 5 years older than me and they look fab. Then you find out they didn't have kids.

Also, good genes help.

TheSmilingBeaver · 22/11/2020 20:09

Really enjoying reading these responses and brilliant advice.

Wearing sunglasses - I need to invest in a nice pair that suits my very small round head! I must admit its rare i wear them even in the sunshine but I think its down to not finding a pair I really love!

General positiveness and happy attitude - I LOVE this and very true. Not only is this an attractive trait its brilliant for your own personal mental health.

Water - noted to drink more water! This can sometimes be difficult when I'm working on site and not always toilets available but days wfh I can definately increase the amount I consume!

I am also a big coffee drinker - am I right in thinking that coffee massively dehydrates your skin? I like the advice from a poster below about drinking water before, I am going to do this!

Any advice for dark circles is also welcomed, not sure if this is an ageing issue though... missing the point of my own thread.. 👏

Good genes and luck.

No smoking no alcohol
Hair dye. Water.
Stay out of the sun

TheSmilingBeaver · 22/11/2020 20:12

@gindinner I don't think this thread is going that way at all, generally very positive and brilliant advice!

I don't know if I could say I aged well! I asked DH, but I reckon he's a bit biased. People tend to be surprised when they find out how old I am, so I'll go on that.

I drink like the proverbial fish. And his mate. However, I also drink lots of water, and I've had a very good skincare routine since my twenties. I have fits and bursts of exercise, but mainly, housework and gardening are my most consistent forms of physical activity. I do try to eat my five plus a day. I do eat quite a bit of meat, eggs, and cheese.

Megan2018 · 22/11/2020 20:13

I’m aging well and I’ve been a big drinker with an average diet. No skincare routine as such but always used SPF 25 moisturiser on my face and do drink a lot of water.
It’s genetics though, my parents in their early 70’s look and act a good 10 years younger. My grandmother in her 90’s barely looks 80, lives independently etc.

Oily skin for sure. Friends who are the same age as me (& who have better diets) and have dry skin do look older due more visible fine lines. I really put this down to level of oil in faces. At last, a plus of having an oiler face!

TheSmilingBeaver · 22/11/2020 20:19

Interesting point about money. I am not sure i have noticed it before, but not really looked out for it or in regular company with wealthy folk!

What is it though about having money makes you look younger? Botox/better skincare/better dressed???

RosesAndHellebores · 22/11/2020 20:19

Top tip.

Whilst my face is OK my hands let me down. Never worn gloves, rubbish at hand cream, nails not great. Sun damage from gardening etc, because one forgets to sun cream the poor old hands.

Please look after your hands. I wish I had. They really let the rest of me down Sad

MsAnnFrope · 22/11/2020 20:20

I’m early 40s and people think I’m 10 years younger - it was genetic luck and being a ginger I always use sun screen.
I agree about the happiness factor, I’m stressed at the moment and I can see it in my face. Luckily when the stress goes, so far, my glow comes back.

Oh and quite a chubby cheeked baby face! The bane of my life when I was getting IDed at 30 but not so bad now!

peakotter · 22/11/2020 20:20

Choose your parents wisely.

ithoughtisawapuddycat · 22/11/2020 20:21

I'm 40 but no one ever believes me and think I'm more like 30. I am very pale, blonde hair, blue eyes. I've never really sunbathed or done even fake tan. I drink lots of water but definitely not had a healthy diet in the past.

I've been very careful with my skincare in the last year or two as I've lost a lot of weight quickly due to weight loss surgery and wanted to ensure my skin would cope. My face has been fine but can't say the same for the rest of the skin on my body lol but I don't care.

Not sure genetics has anything to do with me as my parents both have dark hair, tan very easily and enjoy the sun. I have the same colouring as my grandmother.

DrDetriment · 22/11/2020 20:22

Genetics and I don't have children. I've always been a healthy weight and have a youthful outlook I guess.
