What is your secret? =p

Light hearted thread.

I am 31 and with more time on my hands due to lockdown started to Introduce new skincare to my daily routine, including vitamin C, retinol and BHA.

Got me thinking of whether those who have aged well physically have had a good regime (I.e skincare, diet, spf, exercise, water etc) or whether it has been mainly down to genetics.

I have also noticed my teeth are yellowing from too much coffee so I need to take more care and get them whitened !

Wrinkles are now cropping up and I have dark eye circles!

I also have noticed as I've got older I gain weight so much quicker, up until I was 25 I physically couldn't PUT ON weight and was stuck at 7 stone. I definately don't have that problem now and I need to kick my bum and get back to running!

Oily skin is an interesting one. Or do you mean "olive" skin?
My mother's old school friend tanned very easily, and would lie in the sun for hours when young. My mother never did (although she did tan).
Put them side-by-side at 50 (as we did, for a photo at a family event) and my mother looked years younger. Her friend's skin was like old leather.

NotExactlyMrsCurrentAffairs · 22/11/2020 19:14

I look very young for my 40 years. I often get asked for I.D.
I don't have any wrinkles or grey hair. My hair is naturally blonde. I don't use hair dye.
I rarely use cosmetics.
I do use a good dollop of neutrogena deep moisture comfort balm on my face, neck, arms and legs daily. I have done for over 10 years now. I swear by it. It's cheap too. I stock up when it's on offer at boots. A pot lasts me around a month to 6 weeks and when it's on offer it's around £3.50

I’m 48 and look 40. It’s just luck and genetics. I’m a wine drinking/carb loving/sun worshipper who’s had kids.

I’ve never smoked, and am a bit overweight whilst still “going in” at the waist, which helps perhaps.

Some people just look younger. Tina o’Brien in Corrie is a great example. I always think it about the politician Yvette Cooper too, whenever she appears on tv.

Genetics tbf
Low stress career
Have never sunbathed (because i find it boring) and have put factor 30+ on my face as soon as it gets over about 22C for the last 10 years or so and always wear a hat shading my face over that temperature (or else I get headaches)
Never smoked

doctorhamster · 22/11/2020 19:17

So much of it is down to genetics I think. My DF doesn't have a single grey hair at 70 and could easily pass for 60, if not 55. I'm overweight which I definitely think helps my face. I also have quite oily skin. I'm 40 and I don't have any noticeable wrinkles.

I also think staying active makes a massive difference. My DPs walk miles and are always busy doing one thing or another. They are strong and fit. I really notice a difference between DM and her sister who doesn't eat well and takes no exercise. She looks older than DM but is actually 2.5 years younger.

FredtheFerret · 22/11/2020 19:19

I'm aging ok and it's pure luck.

I smoked for over 30 years (I know.. Blush I'm a child of the 70s) and my skin care routine consists of wiping a wet flannel over my face in a morning to wake me up.

Occasionally I look at myself in the mirror and think I might look really fabulous if I'd ever taken care of myself.

Fluffycloudland77 · 22/11/2020 19:21

No booze, no fags, no sun, wears spf ever single day & eat unprocessed food.

When I buy alcoholic gifts I get asked for ID.

funtimefrank · 22/11/2020 19:24

I am 46 and look 45 ;). I have greasy skin and it's not very wrinkled really. Non smoker, always eaten fairly healthily if too much sugar. A bit fat. So I look my age.

DM looks 10 years younger than her mid 70s age to the extent her consultant recently apologised for the dob error in her notes- this was a dermatologist so knew skin!

She never smoked, has been moderate in all things, spends lots of time outside and is constantly active. Her mother was similarly young looking. Shame I have my dads genes!

CheltenhamLady · 22/11/2020 19:24

I am 60, and often told I don't look my age. My mother had fantastic skin well into her 80's. I do like wine and a G&T though, but have never smoked or let the sun onto my face without a good SP factor cream on it. I am overweight but when I diet I look a bit haggard so I think I will lose weight, but maybe not as much as I should.

To sum up:

Genetics
Happiness
Love and family connections.
Moisturise copiously daily
Moisturise hands, wrinkled hands are ageing.
Little stress or stress handled well.
Money that buys services that ease lives burdens.
Good diet
laugh a lot
Exercise
moderate drinking
good holidays but with sun cream worn every day

DryRoastPeanut · 22/11/2020 19:25

Prob not the greatest photo of me, but I’m very almost 60.
The point is....am I great or not?
I use Nivea creme daily. Liz Earle cleanser when I wear make up.

It’s subjective.

I bet Katie Price thinks she’s aged well.
She would have, until she had surgery. I’ve had zero cosmetic surgery.

If you have physically aged well.. to ask...
Thehollyandtheirony · 22/11/2020 19:28

Most people I know who look younger than their age have either had boring lives or are overweight.
Neither option appeals to me and I didn’t get lucky in the anti- aging genetic lottery so I will just have to live with the wrinkles.

funandgammon · 22/11/2020 19:29

Well I still get ID-Ed at 42 so I think I have. I have quite a round chubby face though. When I went to Mac for a foundation colour check she said I had good fat deposits on my cheeks making them appley 👀

I'm mixed race. I have always washed my face with plain water due to being sensitive to soap. I use palmers cocoa butter on my face and coconut oil on my body. I also have drank 2litre of water a day no fail since I was 21. My mum who is a teacher went to a conference on the importance of hydration for learning and sold it to us lol.

I've drank a load of alcohol in my life though. I love to tan. And I smoked for a bit during my teens/twenties. So I'm gona go with fat face and hydration habits being the secret lol.

W3dontdoduvets · 22/11/2020 19:30

Genetics, mainly.

Elizabella · 22/11/2020 19:30

Don't smoke
Moderate alcohol consumption
Don't sunbathe for too long and always wear sunscreen
Lots of fruit and veg and water
A good moisturiser (not necessarily an expensive one)
Try to look for the good in life (a good attitude is v youthful)
Keep a sense of humour
Wear cream blush
Wear sunglasses whenever you need to (all year round)
Try to keep a steady weight as it IS harder to lose the older you get
Wear less makeup or get stuff that doesn't settle in lines
Hylauronic acid is your friend by day and retinol cream by night
Some natural looking highlights around your face can lift things

Madbengalmum · 22/11/2020 19:32

Mid 40’s, but get told i look late 20’s/early 30’s. Some of it is genetic, low alcohol intake, reasonable exercise, not too much sun, sleep well, eat well, watch weight.

TwentyViginti · 22/11/2020 19:32

@MagicSummer

I think genetics plays a huge part - I am 65 and when I went for my flu jab, the nurse asked if I had come on the wrong day as I look nowhere near that age! That is despite drinking like a fish, as my family have always done, not doing much in the way of exercise and eating what I want to. I am slightly overweight but I don't care! My father kept his dark hair and youthful complexion until he died at 86, my mother always looked young and glamorous. Luck of the draw, I think.
Are you me? ShockGrin

Definitely genetics and luck of the draw.

I had my DC young - in my twenties- I wonder if that makes a difference too, as a PP said?

Madbengalmum · 22/11/2020 19:32

Oh and no smoking.

CeibaTree · 22/11/2020 19:37

I look much younger than I am, I'd love to say it's something I've done, but I used to work in a hot equatorial country or 3 months a year for ten years and never wore sunscreen, and I also used to smoke and drink a lot. In my case it's definitely genetics, and I really think being mixed race is a big factor - I am1/4 Asian and 3/4 white. Pretty much all of the mixed race people I know (of whatever mix of races) tend to look younger than their years. I have just started using face products though as I feel like it's all going to catch up with me one day!

gindinner · 22/11/2020 19:38

I'm not sure that I look younger necessarily, but physically I feel good. I workout quite a lot, and make sure I eat well. I drink a lot of water, try to get enough sleep etc etc. I do use an spf every day, even when cloudy and use retin A. I live quite a stressful life,
I,e everyone else, and I know there are days when I look not so good. But, I feel great and full of energy most days. I'm 53.

gindinner · 22/11/2020 19:38

Oh yes, and no sugar, high protein diet

gindinner · 22/11/2020 19:39

But obviously I like a gin now and then Wink

PyongyangKipperbang · 22/11/2020 19:39

I am 47 and frequently get mistaken for early/mid 30's and I would say it is virtually all down to genetics.

My grandmother and my aunt all looked a lot younger than their years, and I seem to have inherited the same gift. My mum and my sister didnt, much to my sisters annoyance as she is younger than me but people assume she is the elder sibling.

Drogonssmile · 22/11/2020 19:43

I'll be 40 next year and people seem genuinely surprised when they find out my age. They tend to assume I'm around 5-7 years younger. DH has the same thing. I even got ID'd the other day! I reckon mines genetic though as my mum who is 70 next year looks about 60. And her mum also never looked her age.

alexdgr8 · 22/11/2020 19:44

CheltenhamLady, thank you for mentioning money.
this can make a huge difference. and you were the only one to mention ?realise, it.
may you continue to flourish as the green bay tree.

Mintjulia · 22/11/2020 19:46

Lucky genes, never smoked, don't drink much alcohol, eat plenty of veg, and had a baby at 45 (which I realise is fairly drastic)

I have an easy, good humoured ds. I'm 57 now and still running, haven't put on any weight, smooth clear skin, no aches or pains.

Didn't stop me getting a few grey hairs though. Grin
