Another thousand posts filled and we're ploughing on through another weekend of squelching through parks before we hit the Long Dark Teatime of the Soul.

The AD chat continues...

She’s been dead about 20 years I think so probably doesn’t look that lovely any more.

I completely lose my sense of taste with a cold as well - tea tastes vile for a few days.

See that bastard Gove is saying hospitals will be overrun if MPs vote against the tier system. That man has a face I’d love to slap!

justasking111 · 28/11/2020 13:44

Just remembered when early pregnant first sign my sense of taste went weird, I wonder how many unknowingly pregnant women will panic.

TabbyStar · 28/11/2020 13:51

Well, my DD is in hospital in a covid hotspot / tier 3 area (she's non-covid) and it's very quiet, only two of them in a six bed bay. Apparently it has been really busy in the last couple of weeks but now just very quiet. My DM has been to A&E twice in the last week too (it's been a challenging week!) also in a (different) hotspot area, and she said the same. It's difficult to know whether people are just staying at home when they really should be in hospital though. One of the paramedics who came for my DM commented on the increase in mental health cases they were seeing. I saw a chart this morning that indicated normal occupancy rates, with no hospitals overloaded, but then the figures have a bit of a lag.

Iheartmysmart · 28/11/2020 13:57

Interesting @TabbyStar. There’s an article in our local paper where health chiefs are begging people to follow the rules as the hospital is nearly full. The facts that it was too small when it was built; is always overrun this time of year and the town has massively grown in the last 20+ years don’t get a mention.

At my age, if I was pregnant it'd be a Christmas miracle!

This is where I saw the beds stuff, scroll down a bit, though obvs you don't always know whether these are accurate, they look as though they fit with other data I've seen adapnation.io/covid-insights/

FeelsLikeGroundhogDay · 28/11/2020 14:29

Loving the SAGE suggestions for an outdoor Christmas dinner, we only have a pebbled drive way & can imagine the looks on my GPs as we huddle out there, around DPs DIY bbq he made in the summer Grin

I hope they get better soon and that you’re holding up all right.

Im slightly concerned about some plum trying to have a barbecue on their balcony now. No room really but people might decide it’s safer in this building....

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 28/11/2020 14:47

We thought weather dependent we might do bonfire night II for new year eve- cooking on fire pit and last of small fireworks - but we don't usually do much for New Year Eve.

TabbyStar · 28/11/2020 14:48

Thanks Acorn, my DM is pretty frail, DD is okay though, on IV antibiotics for an infection, she's just bored! It's not the best timing, it would have been better if they'd got ill a few weeks ago when I had little work!

bakingcupcakes · 28/11/2020 14:52

I don't think I would isolate and test in that situation Curly as it's normal for you when you have a cold.

I also saw that dreadful bbc article last night too. Think it was the same one that advised against board games where you may all need to use the dice...

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 28/11/2020 14:53

@TabbyStar hope your DD and Mum get better/home soon.

It was quiet when DDad was in over summer and that got neccesary due to really poor GP care leading up to admission- but it's still hard to get near GP where they are and where we are still.

AcornAutumn · 28/11/2020 14:57

Tabby the frailty thing is such a worry, I know.

Does anyone know what stuff smells like if washed in Milton sterilising fluid? Mum’s worried about how she washes her face covering but no one wants to inhale strong washing powder etc. Thanks.

Orangeblossom7777 · 28/11/2020 15:09

I think it may be better just to wash it on a hot wash than use something like that which could cause an irritation? Not sure

Thanks for advice on *s

Well, we have all had this cold and yesterday went for a test after reading over there about headaches, etc (had lost smell as well) it came back negative today...had stressed out and cancelled seeing a (vulnerable) friend over it too...

just a cold.

Reedwarbler · 28/11/2020 15:09

@AcornAutumn I read somewhere that ironing masks with a steam iron on the cotton setting kills all bugs. Does depend what the mask is made of though.

TabbyStar · 28/11/2020 15:11

There was a very non-dementor segment on Alexa's BBC news this morning from Allyson Pollock criticising the mass testing and the Govt claiming it as a success with no evaluation.

Iheartmysmart · 28/11/2020 15:15

Ah but if you use an iron there is a danger you may burn yourself and overwhelm the NHS with your carelessness.

AcornAutumn · 28/11/2020 15:18

😂

Seriously, I could do that but ironing face covers seems a faff.

Also, she’s got those face coverings that looks a bit like a veil, I’m not sure the fabric will stand it.

...where you may all need to use the dice... Specially when you all, on your turn, cup your hands and blow on the die for luck 🤣🤣🤣

@Reedwarbler @Iheartmysmart @AcornAutumn

Don't iron it whilst wearing it ... 🤣🤣🤣

Recycledblonde · 28/11/2020 15:36

I’ve just ventured onto a COVID thread, the one about the 14 year old confined to her room. I’m donning a tin hat and body armour.😆

This is one time it’s appropriate to say - stay safe! 😂

@tabbystar that's really interesting, given that we were told we were in tier 3 because hospital capacity was overrun with covid patients, but it isn't.
There are a few hospitals and one is relatively highly occupied but its a small hospital with low capacity that shuts for one reason or another every year.
So essentially we are again being penalised because the govt doesn't believe we are worthy of a functioning hospital.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 28/11/2020 17:08

Also interestingly, Greece went into Lockdown on 7th November. Two days after ours.
All but essential shops were closed, movement on the street was restricted and you had to text the government if you wanted to go out, and give a reason.

The greek police have been enforcing this with fines, it is observed and policed very strictly.

Their infections are still rising. So their lockdown has been extended.

Their infection rate isn't even that high so why aren't their numbers coming down at all? Its almost as if lockdowns don't work.....

Could a family invest in individual pairs of tongs with which to pick up the dice & roll them?

Will Monopoly be done by contactless card payments?
