I say adjustable bed you say....

We need a new bed. Currently have divan. DP hates it and is desperate for a headboard when he is sitting up reading/drinking coffee.

Trouble is there is only 50cm at the end of the bed as it is, a headboard will consume around 20cm of that. We've found one that's only 9cm buts is 400 pounds! (Loaf).

DP thinks an adjustable bed is the solution but I worry they are for all old ppl/ugly.

Anyone got one? Any magic solutions?

I'd love one. It'd be so handy.

Elasticated sheets are your friend.

You would have two single sheets.

A sheet of plywood, 3 cm foam, wadding, fabric and a stapler.
Stick to the wall with Command strips.
Maximum depth - 10 cm.
Cost - considerably less than that Loaf one.

I've just been up and measured the distance from our wall to mattress. It's less then 7cm. And some of that would exist even if there wasnt a head board there. That's a full height headboard attached to a divan base.

I'd want to be very sure of what the join between the two mattresses was like before I went for an adjustable bed. But my immediate thought (probably unfairly) is old peoples homes.

Yep. I just bought single sheets with elastic corners - job done! Think they came from Tesco/Argos. Ordinary sheets just come untucked and ruck down into the ‘bend’ when you raise the mattress.

Tbf op, This would be a very easy thing to do. Zero skill needed. Patience a bonus!

Alternatively buy one of those wedge pillows and use it behind your back when you want to sit up and read.

We have a huge padded headboard that attaches to the wall so doesn't take up floor space.

Other pro of having an adjustable bed: if you ever need major surgery or have an injury your recovery period will be so much less stressful (trying to get out of a normal bed after surgery is bloody torturous).

Also, divans are hardly renowned for their beauty so I'm not sure your "but it's ugly" protest holds against adjustable beds.

I really want one. I had a 3 month stay in hospital in 2014 and really came to appreciate the adjustable bed. I stayed in a B&B shortly after which had one which was quite stylish too.

@RandomMess this sounds great but I worry it will then takeaway from the length of the sleep space available? DP is 6 foot 5!

DH is 6'3" , it's not deep it's tall and wide.

Bensons and Dreams both do adjustable beds. Just bought my mum a new one from Bensons - I would buy myself one if I could afford it.

Have a look at the sleep motion from dreams. We've got one and it's so handy, can control it from your phone too. And the bonus is it doesn't look like an old person bed. Only downside is it isn't split so both sides raise at the same time. But if you want separate you can get 2 singles and just push them together. Cheaper than a standard adjustable too. You will need specific mattresses for it though so the springs don't get damaged but again you don't have to have the mega expensive adjustable mattresses with them.

They really do hold fast.

I used 4 Command strips to install a (home made) double headboard above adult son's bed. It didn't budge in 2 years - until I actually wanted to remove it.
