DialSquare · 15/11/2020 00:34

Many of my favourites have already been mentioned but here are some R&B ones that I can't see have been mentioned.

I feel for you -Chaka Khan
Last night a DJ saved my life - Indeep
All night long - Mary Jane Girks
Juicy Fruit - Mtume

Marti Webb - 'Take That Look Off Your Face'
Liza Minelli - 'Losing My Mind'
The Nolans - 'I'm In The Mood For Dancing' - it's cheesier than Cooper's Hill, but the dancefloor fills instantly whenever it begins!

Has anybody said Charlene - 'I've Never Been To Me' yet? No? Nobody? Well, I wonder why ever not Grin

Snugglepumpkin · 15/11/2020 01:46

I've seen lots of my favourites already listed, but not sure if

Martha & the Muffins - Echo Beach

has already been mentioned & I missed it.

Slapdasherie · 15/11/2020 01:52

Well, if we’re having Charlene, then we also need to have Juice Newton - Angel of the Morning anyone?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 15/11/2020 01:57

Is that the one that Shaggy covered?!

MercyBooth · 15/11/2020 01:59

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll I had the Liza Minelli album which featured that song. Was produced by the Pet Shop Boys and called Results.

FanGurrl · 15/11/2020 02:00

I was mainly into boy bands at the time, however, I loved (and still do) Gloria Estefan. Have seen her live many times.

Gloria Estefan - 'Cuts Both Ways'
Love the whole album, but the title track gets me every time.

LaBodDelMed · 15/11/2020 02:05

@RebeccaNoodles

Gloria - Laura Brannigan
This 👍🏻

I was going to say no, but it is - angel of angels
Graphista · 15/11/2020 05:09

Soo many great ones

Though I think "rush hour" was Jane wiedlin not Karen wheeler?

And a fair few posters haven't properly read the remit -

80's
Female vocalists

Mine include but not limited to:

Strawberry switchblade - since yesterday (you think you don't know it - you do!)
Eurythmics - miracle of love
Alison moyet - this house (b side to love letters, though later released in its own right in 1991 written and 1st released in 80's and that's when I first heard it. Heartbreaking song)
Robin beck - first time
Donna summer dinner with gershwin
The carpenters - those good old dreams (glad I'm not the only carpenters fan)
Pointer sisters - automatic
Madonna - live to tell
Ellkie Brooks - no more the fool (tempter to stray into 70's here with pearl's a singer)
5 star - rain or shine
Fun boy 3 (wait for it) and bananarama - our lips are sealed
Sheena Easton (yes I know she vanished up her own arse via Prince's) - for your eyes only is still stunning though

@Spuriously17windows and @WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants - how cool would it be if you are those 2 girls all grown up?

@AndNoneForGretchenWieners sorry Beverly craven is 90's but I love her too, at one point I knew every word and all the arrangements for the entire love scenes album my flat mates must have been SO SICK. Of it

Gloria Estefan - here we are - another album I knew far too well

I am setting up an Amazon Playlist tomorrow called Mumsnet 80s Gold! is this a prime members thing? If so how do you do that?

@ChaosTrulyReigns I find myself arguing with absolute 80's that certain tracks are 70's or 90's...then look them up and am corrected often but I maintain certain tracks "belong" in other decades

Pepsi and Shirlie - heartache (has to squeeze a wham! Reference in somehow! )

Nolan sisters - sorry @WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll that one was 1979 I remember wearing flares still dancing to that one! However there is who's gonna rock you - no? Rock and Nolan's? Yea not really Grin

Graphista · 15/11/2020 05:12

Another bold fail

wowfudge · 15/11/2020 07:44

@Graphista - that's an amazing list. Our Lips are Sealed is the Go Gos and Fun Boy 3, written by Jane Wiedlin and Terry Hall. Fab song though I misheard some of the lyrics and only realised recently. It Ain't What You Do It's the Way That You Do It was Bananarama and Fun Boy 3. Fern Kinney was a late 70s release.

Graphista · 15/11/2020 08:27

@wowfudge seems we're both wrong it was a drummer from a. 3rd band on the fun boy 3 version

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/OurLipssAreSealed#FunnBoyThreee_version

I stand corrected on fern Kinney released end of 79 but charted in 80?

WildRosie · 15/11/2020 08:31

Together We Are Beautiful by Fern Kinney charted in the UK in February 1980. It was one of those rare records that shrieked 'number one' the moment it appeared, although I don't think it was that successful in the USA.

Cambodia and Four Letter Word by Kim Wilde are probably her two best songs. Just a pity her looks triumphed over her vocal ability.

OP posts:
wowfudge · 15/11/2020 08:46

@Graphista I don't get what you are saying about Our Lips are Sealed?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 15/11/2020 11:38

According to Wikipedia, re the Nolans song:

"Originally released in December 1979, the song became a top three hit in the UK in February 1980."

Surely we can let it in on a technicality?!?!?!

wowfudge · 15/11/2020 14:21

Just coming back to Our Lips are Sealed - it was never sung by the Go Gos and Fun Boy 3 together, but MTV did do a mash up of the two groups' videos for it. I think that may be what I remember.

LunaNorth · 15/11/2020 16:36

I’ve had a cracking Sunday listening to all these! Great thread.

WildRosie · 15/11/2020 17:31
