Tesco Christmas slot

Bluespace · 13/11/2020 07:32

Is anyone else trying to get a Christmas delivery slot?

This is my first year booking a delivery and I think I underestimated the demand - I’ve been in the queue for the best part of an hour Shock

Over 2 hours wait here with delivery saver & priority slot access. I managed to book 21st. Midnight last year was much easier but online grocery shopping wasn't as popular then!

VettiyaIruken · 13/11/2020 19:20

Bugger.
She could book the 20th though.
I wonder if Tesco holds back some slots to release closer to the time. If not, I think there's going to be a lot of people missing out.

@Venicelover no high horse here, just finding it baffling. I had no idea people shopped in more than one supermarket a week, I go to one and buy what they sell!

I don't usually shop in more than one each week. I generally alternate.

Having a delivery pass at £5 a month for each supermarket is still much cheaper than paying per delivery. In normal times you can have a mid-week top-up delivery and a weekend delivery if needed. In Covid times that isn't possible due to the availability of slots. I have a large family to cater for.

I have an Ocado Xmas already delivery booked because they released their slots weeks ago, as did M&S.

TheFlis12345 · 14/11/2020 00:30

I completely forgot. Checked my email this morning and saw the reminder so logged in just before 9 and had the choice of virtually any slot in the week up to Christmas, went for an evening slot on the 22nd. Maybe there are more slots open where I am in west London?

Stillfunny · 14/11/2020 04:28

These kind of delivery arrangements are not really common where I live . Not in UK. Can I ask why people need this ? Is it because of work schedules? Or avoiding crowded shops? Non drivers ? Budgeting ? Supply issues ?

I just go to the shop and buy what I want!

DinosApple · 14/11/2020 05:22

@Stillfunny - I don't know whereabouts you are but supermarkets in the UK just before Christmas are absolutely crazy busy.

Christmas is a massive deal here, although not so much for the religious aspect. Many people go all out to make it a special day. Parties before, big extended family dinner on the day, lots of presents. Some businesses completely shut down between Christmas and New Year (construction industry, schools, smaller professional businesses like accountants etc) so there is a sense of occasion.

Supermarkets might have their car parks three-quarters full at busy times the rest of the year, but before Christmas you'll probably have to wait for a space, ratcheting up stress levels before you get in.
Once inside the shop is heaving, most people will be trying to buy very similar products (sprouts, carrots, potatoes, extra thick cream, sausages, bacon , turkey or the meat of preference for the household). God forbid you pick up the last of something, everyone around will glare at you! Everyone with a trolley will have forgotten how to steer it, given its unwieldy load. If you have to take DC with you too... 😱. It also takes twice as long to do it as any other time of year!

There's very little of the Christmas spirit to be had in a supermarket in the week before Christmas. Plus the shops are then shut on the big day- shock horror- for a whole 24 hours - so no emergency top ups.

This is why I do it online Wink!

PatchworkElmer · 14/11/2020 05:39

@Stillfunny honestly we’re doing it for the first time this year because we’re both high risk for Covid, and there’s no way I’m going into a crowded supermarket the week before Christmas, to jostle with people for the last sack of spuds.

I’ve been trying to persuade DH to just have it delivered for years in order to avoid the stress of going in when we also have full-on jobs and a small child to juggle. He’s always maintained that he wants to be able to hand-select everything. Covid has made him re-think how important this actually is.

ImAncient · 14/11/2020 06:08

@Venicelover on my account I have my mum who lives about 20 minutes from me & my dc who is at uni. I have had deliveries to all 3 addresses in the same week when I needed to.

WellyBootsAreYouFrom · 14/11/2020 08:18

@Stillfunny I do it because my nearest supermarket is an hour away, they deliver for £9 a month. I usually get 4 deliveries a month, and would spend much more in fuel getting there and back 4 times. It also saves me the hassle, which is nice too.

RedTawny · 14/11/2020 08:51

I must have got super lucky, I logged in at 7 and got straight through, reserved my slot but it did keep crashing at the payment bit. I logged out at 710, went for a run, logged back in at 745 no problem and checked out. I'm so glad it happened like that, of I'd been queued I'd have give up and not bothered

Meruem · 14/11/2020 09:05

I forgot they were doing this today until seeing this thread. Logged on and straight away got one for the 20th (the days after that were full). That’s fine with me as we have our Christmas dinner on 24th anyway. I already have the meats in the freezer so it’s just veg and stuff I’ll need. I shop online because I don’t drive. There are supermarkets near me but there’s only so much I can carry.

Venicelover · 14/11/2020 09:14

I have just managed to get MIL one on my account for the 20th, which will be fine for her. I had forgotten about the add an address function. I used it previously when my sons were at university. A useful idea.

BetteTwoShoes · 14/11/2020 09:19

Was in the queue for 90 mins (from 6.55am after being logged on through both the app and website) and didn’t get onto the website. Logged back on later in the day and managed to get a click and collect for 22nd which wouldn’t have been my preference.

Been a delivery saver/weekly shop customer for years. Probably won’t be renewing this time. I don’t understand why some people joined the queue after me but seemed to get to the front of the queue much more quickly.

alphabetsoup1980 · 14/11/2020 09:19

Asda has lots of slots!!!!!

ellenpartridge · 14/11/2020 09:30

I got on at about 7.05 with no queue at all and booked my slot for 23 Dec. Was much quicker and easier for me than last year when they released them at midnight and I was in the queue for over an hour. But looks like I just got lucky this year!

BetteTwoShoes · 14/11/2020 09:31

@alphabetsoup1980

Asda has lots of slots!!!!!
Nothing at all where I live.
HedgieHog · 14/11/2020 09:40

I’ve had a delivery saver for about 7 years, when it was midnight I’ve always been lucky, though every year I see Twitter full of people complaining they are in a long queue or have missed out, this year at 7 I wasn’t as quick online but did still get the day I wanted
I think it’s down to luck, I think it’s more a holding page than ordered queue
Every year people with savers miss out but a week later slots are on general release and they hold lots back so everyone has a fair chance
Demand for online has been crazy this year so add that to the regular Christmas crazy and you are always going to get disappointed people
It reminds me of the stress of getting Glastonbury tickets 😂

TeenPlusTwenties · 14/11/2020 09:45

I wonder on the queueing thing whether they 'know' your area and that impacts things? After all, a slot in Dundee isn't much use if you live in Reading.
(So it's not like queuing for Harry Potter & Cursed Child tickets where everyone is after the exact same thing.)

HedgieHog · 14/11/2020 09:57

No I can’t imagine they’d know, it’s just the volume of people trying to get on a website
How could they know which location you are ordering for until you are in?

TeenPlusTwenties · 14/11/2020 10:01

Hedgie Well if you are logged in, then they must have info for you, mustn't they? I'm just trying to understand how some people appear to have 'jumped the queue'.

merlotormalbec · 14/11/2020 10:03

I don't get this because I didn't even realise there was a queuing system. Got the app up on my iPad about 6.55 and was in at 7.01. Very weird!

PodgeBod · 14/11/2020 10:06

I forgot until yesterday afternoon but managed to get one for the 21st. I'm ok with that as I can pop to the local tesco express for any fresh top ups on Christmas eve. Tesco badly let me down a couple of years ago with a late night 23rd delivery and half of my shopping was missing so as long as I dont have to go shopping on Christmas eve again, I'm happy!
Unless they completely cancel my delivery 20 minutes before its due to arrive like they did this week Hmm

MyOtherProfile · 14/11/2020 10:10

I'm sure it varies according to where you are. I'm logged in with my home address and have a different experience from my mum who is a couple of hours away. Otherwise they wouldn't be able to match you to actual available delivery slots.
