Anyone got a 'snug' room?

DotTheCaddy · 12/11/2020 20:31

If so, what is it like?

I just cant seem to make my new snug feel right. It's got a sofa and a little table with a lamp, not the nicest of fireplaces and all the dogs toys in it. What can I do to make it super cosy and inviting?

My in laws had one. It had a little two seater sofa, armchair, tv, coffee table, and a some side lights, and to be fair everyone always sat in there rather than the big living room, it was kinda less posh if that makes sense, so more comfortable.

Maybe you could post some pics? Have you got things like cushions, a throw etc?

weepingwillow22 · 12/11/2020 20:36

What colour is it? I would go for a dark colour with lots of metallic accessories and accent lighting.

byvirtue · 12/11/2020 20:37

Rug, pouffe, multiple throws? We have 5 lamps in ours it’s more cosy with lamps on than the wall lights. We use ours all the time in the winter.

A friend I had in school had one. It was a little room that they kept quite dark with two quite worn, small sofas, a TV, fire place, little lamps, I think a bookcase. I loved it. It was very cosy.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 12/11/2020 20:39

The also had blankets and cushions on the sofas and rug which covered nearly the whole floor, but it was a small room.

We have one (was a play room back in the day). Has a corner sofa, armchair, coffee table and lamp with a TV in the corner. We painted it in 'overtly olive' earlier this year - it's a lovely green which makes it a very cosy room. Probably use it more than the sitting room.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 12/11/2020 20:53

We don't have a snug but our living room is small and cosy.

Get rid of the dog toys (not altogether, only into another room!) and then decorate your fireplace with candles (battery ones if you're worried about the safety aspect) and fairy lights. If you read, you could get a big set of shelves filled with books. A rug on the floor and soft blankets makes a room feel cosy as well as warm, soft lighting instead of the big overhead light.

A chunky basket for the dog toys, a big rug, blankets and warm lamps... and a bookshelf.

Imissmoominmama · 12/11/2020 20:57

Can you post a photo of the fireplace?

GreyishDays · 12/11/2020 20:58

Pictures on the walls.

I have one, people say it’s the best room in the house! It’s colourful, lots of cushions, a two weather sofa with a throw, an arm chair, large rug, lovely floor lamp, quirky ceiling lamp, lots of art work on the walls. No tv.

saltedkiss · 12/11/2020 21:04

My parents had one. They had a bigger sofa and a snuggler chair. Also a big rug, dimly lit lamps, a soft furry throw, bookcase and a fireplace with candles/ornaments on it. Make sure you get tall side tables for your mug of coffee and always had the fire lit in winter.

AnnieMaul · 12/11/2020 21:05

We had one in our old house. Not a fat lot in it to be honest.
Giant bean bag, board games and novelty tat that didn't really fit anywhere else in the house. It felt like a pointless use of space really!

Audreyseyebrows · 12/11/2020 21:10

We have a sofa bed, chaise lounge, 2 big bookcases, record player, shelves of vinyl, a couple of lamps, rugs and lots of blankets. It’s my chill out room. Sadly it’s one of the only rooms without a fireplace! I’m waiting for a child to move out so I can swap the rooms.

Look on Pinterest for hygge interiors.

Yes we have one. With a large corner sofa, corner lamp, rug and coffee table. Babies change table and toys
It's a nice place for my boy to feed during the night when he wakes

Cecilia2016 · 12/11/2020 21:24

We have one and I love sitting there alone. I have a soft corner sofa with soft matching cushions.
Soft rug
Large soft teddy
Arm chair
Lamp
A small table
Tv on the wall
A clock and blind on the window.
It is my favourite room in the house.

phoebemcpeepee · 12/11/2020 21:24

I love our snug - it's painted in a deep dark blue and is super cosy and fees so serene. It's pretty small so furniture is limited to a 2 seater sofa and armchair plus small coffee table with tv wall mounted and some invisible book holders (book look like their stuck on the wall iykwim). The key is lots of layers and textures - we have a knitted blanket, a sheepskin throw, big deep shaggy rug, velvet sofa, cord & velvet cushions etc. I'm quite minimalist elsewhere but this room more definitely works - pot plants, books. Oh and for the evening decent lighting is a must - a harsh centre light will make even the cosiest room seem stark.

Cecilia2016 · 12/11/2020 21:24

And a large blanket

TrickyD · 12/11/2020 21:30

We have a snug with rather a nice fireplace containing a gas fire with artificial coals. We have proper open fires in the sitting and dining rooms; this one lights up instantly and makes the room very cosy. Also a Club fender that you can sit on. When my DH worked away in the week I used it all the time for cosy TV watching in the evening, not so much now.
The house was built in 1884 and on the original plans the snug was the Library.

XmasIsSoon · 12/11/2020 21:37

Dark paint, plants, candles, throw pillows & a cozy blanket, a sleek little flatscreen TV, zero toys

Bluntness100 · 12/11/2020 22:07

I think that’s the thing, you make it soft and warm, so blankets, cushions, a good rug like sheepskin, even candles, soft lighting snd it becomes an inviting place to spend time. Dark toned paint is also good.

Lovely carpet or rug - long pile
Comfy sofa or if it's leather get soft throws & cushions
Dimmed lighting - soft focus lightbulbs
Table big enough for a gin & lots of biscuits
Can you do up the fireplace? Varnish it/paint it etc so it's pretty
Lots of candles

Elouera · 16/11/2020 17:17

I'd have:

  • get rid of the dog toys!
  • if you dont want the dogs in there, install a baby gate
  • sheepskin rug or deep pile rug onthe floor
  • pouffe or something to put your feet up on, or an armchair recliner
  • books or craft items
  • radio
  • scented candles/ mood lighting
Muddybuddy · 16/11/2020 17:19

What is a snug? Is it just a living room that’s small (if so, surely lots of people have themSmile) or it is it a second living room?
