What is your opinion of her?

OP posts:
Pedallleur · 08/11/2020 08:44

The American dream right there. From immigrant parents to VP through intellect and hard work. Don't think Ivanka will like her. Good chance she may become President if Biden were to die or become incapacitated.

midsomermurderess · 08/11/2020 08:47

Where do these articles done from, what part of the political spectrum and written by whom? That should help you with your judgement.

GreySkyClouds · 08/11/2020 08:48

@Movingonup67

As a black woman myself I personally think its extremely refreshing. Just reading articles on her quoting she's an extremely dangerous woman and wondered what others opinions were.
Her ethnic origin is half black and half Indian (like Barack Obama is mixed race), and it’s an amazing achievement for a woman.

I don’t know anything about her politics, but appreciate that she can be an aspirational figure for little girls.

hamstersarse · 08/11/2020 08:48

She states her pronouns in her bio

That’s a bit wokey worrying

theonlywayisup33 · 08/11/2020 09:04

Kamala is actually more Indian than black. Being Asian is very different to being black. Her Mum who is Indian bought her up after the divorce from her dad when Kamala was 5 years old. Kamala didn't see her dad after the divorce.- growing up. There were black friends of her mum who were around when she was growing up but she cites her Indian grandfather as a huge influence- she grew up going to India every year.
I would say that she probably is in touch with people from both Asian and Black communities and anyone with a recent immigrant experience.

Flaxmeadow · 08/11/2020 09:08

Her ethnic origin is half black and half Indian

Its interesting that a lot of people in the USA say this, that she is "Black" and "Indian". An odd way of describing someone's heritage. One is an ethnicity and the other a nationality.

Her parents are/were British Jamaican and British Indian

Because everything in American is so hyper racialised, and race is a national obsession. I'm hoping that with her parents heritage she might not be as bogged down in all the identity issues that plague America. Though yes the pronouns thing is slightly worrying

She seems confident, intelligent and very capable. I prefer her to Biden. Time will tell

Blahblahblahhhh · 08/11/2020 09:22

...she doesn't follow biological sex, but believes in gender identity. I hold my breath on how women’s rights (to not have men in female prisons it formerly single sex, now single gender refuges etc) move forward.

This.
Those who say they like Kamala Harris need to do some research on her stand on trans issue.

Blahblahblahhhh · 08/11/2020 09:35

JKRowlingforever she came from nothing to get to those heights

Her dad is professor at Stanford and mother is a "Tamil Brahmin, part of a privileged elite in Hinduism’s ancient caste hierarchy" (wiki) and has a Phd from Berkeley.
So Kamala Harris hardly "came from nothing' ffs

Okbutnotgreat · 08/11/2020 09:58

I’m a little put off by the woke thing and the Black thing as she’s actually Black Asian and I don’t know why one is considered more relevant. Either ignore her ethnicity or use the whole term. Hoping she will be a good influence in general though.

Flaxmeadow · 08/11/2020 10:02

She's just another politician who knows which side her bread is buttered.
It's like when you watch Obamas's speech he made upon visiting Flint Michigan. He took that sip of water and that moment crystalised (for me) who he is and what he stands for.

I like Obama but this reminds me of when he made a big deal about visiting an Irish pub and drinking a pint of Guinness. There was a ridiculous "O'bama is Irish" going on in the USA at the time. The whole thing was massively hyped up. Truth is it's only a tiny part of his mothers, mostly English, family tree, but hey gotta get those, so called, "Irish American" votes in somehow

Though to be fair to him, he was probably pushed into these publicity stunts. Politicians often are by their publicity advisers

icebearforpresident · 08/11/2020 10:15

I like her, infact I was surprised she dropped out of the primary race earlier. I always expected Biden to be the nominee (he was their best prospect of beating Trump) but thought she would be in the race to the end. And She was great during the Kavanaugh hearings.

I hope she has the chance to make real change, which she probably will because I’m not convinced Biden will last 4 years, he’ll stand aside giving her a couple of years at the top before running at the top of the ticket in 2024 (with Mayor Pete as her VP).

notangelinajolie · 08/11/2020 10:18

@Movingonup67

What is your opinion of her?
That depends on how woke she is.
SomethingOnce · 08/11/2020 10:21

Can’t stand this phrase ‘came from nothing’. What a horrible way to describe anybody’s non-elite origins.

Nandakanda · 08/11/2020 10:24

Where does/did she stand on the big stuff? The Iraq war etc?

So fucking sick of hearing about shit like trans rights.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 08/11/2020 10:24

All I know is that a lot of republicans are terrified that Biden is not gonna finish his term, leaving Harris as president, and that they think that would be really terrible.

So I like her a lot.’

This👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼.

She’s a women, she’s black, she’s a democrat.Thank fuck for that!!! At last.

How can she be ‘dangerous?’ Because Trump wasn’t at all dangerous was he?

WouldBeGood · 08/11/2020 10:28

I came on to say this.

It’s really disappointing as in other ways it’s bloody brilliant that a woman is in that position.

JoeBidenIsGreat · 08/11/2020 10:34

Everything I read on this thread about KH's stand on trans issues makes me like her fine.

Reuters says
Kamala Harris [has] continually described her racial identity as Black, South Asian, Indian-American, African-American, and Jamaican-American.

If it takes too many words to be as specific and inclusive as people want, then I'm suspect she won't mind "woman of colour".

I don't agree KH should be resented for having educated, financially comfortable and/or aspirational parents. That was fine for Carter, Bush presidents, Obama & Trump (& most VPs in recent past). KH's childhood experience of being bussed to integrate schools is a refreshing perspective to bring to politics.

Has anyone talked about the 2nd spouse yet? Douglas Emhoff seems a super lovely man. Jill Biden is a sharp academic, both spouses are worth following on Twitter.

People will excuse the most inept men but a woman (let alone one from a minority background) must meet absurdly high standards just to be considered acceptable.

@Nandakanda

It’s not trans rights, per se- trans rights are human rights; it’s the removal of sex based rights which protect specific groups, in favour of ‘gender based’ rights which protect whoever decides they fancy them.
Apple31419 · 08/11/2020 10:50

As a politician, Kamala has been exceptionally "hard on crime", enforcing policies that excessively penalise the population rather than address root causes.
This includes things like the incarceration of parents for their children's truancy, or for marijuana, 3 strikes law etc. Or things like prison labour.
All of this things disproportionately affect.... Black people...
As another poster stated she grew up privileged. Just because she's mixed ethnic minority doesn't necessarily mean she identifies with both heritages and she certainly hasn't had produced the goods when it comes to addressing the problems that black Americans face in the modern US.
Having said that, I do think she is competent, qualified and educated, seeing her debate is wonderful. Following from that There's a chance she is just very good at playing the game and the hard-line element could have been a counter compromise for some thing else, or to get her where she is now. She won't be the first politician to change their stance on something one they have more power.

SirVixofVixHall · 08/11/2020 11:43
@SirVixofVixHall. Everyone at my work has their pronouns on their signatures. I think this is quite normal now and not a threat to women’s rights in any way.
Buying into gender ideology absolutely is a threat to women’s rights. I lose all respect for anyone over 25 who shores up the agenda that has put rapists in prisons with women, and has put male sex offenders and murderers on the stats as women rather than men.
Women’s rights are going backwards all over the world and we are being gaslit into calling this progressive. The “everyone does this now” argument is designed to keep dissenters in their place.

turnitonagain · 08/11/2020 11:47

I know this is sacrilege in the world of MN but with COVID and an orange wannabe fascist running around, the pronouns of the Vice President elect are not priority issues for most Americans.

DangerMouse17 · 08/11/2020 11:55

"Kamala is actually more Indian than black"

She is of mixed heritage. You cant be more this or more that....although you can identify more with a particular side due to environment, who you mix with and what you are exposed to growing up. Please dont try to remove her blackness @theonlywayisup33

Roussette · 08/11/2020 12:04

I admire her.
This picture will tell you all you need to know.
This is Trump's Womens Health Caucus, VP Pence discussing health reform and the Caucus wants to strip certain rights including coverage for maternity services.
Anything wrong with that pic? Yep. Not one woman at the meeting. Full of white men.

That will not be happening with Kamala as VP
