Top or bottom kitchen?
Bottom is our current design, it's a laminate worktop but we have oak floors and oak internal doors through to the hallway and utility so I'm worried with the worktops it's too much different shades/tones of wood. Mumsnet pointed it out to me earlier and I'm wobbling now.

Top is the new design, it would be snowy Ibiza silestone quartz.

Which is better?

I like the warm, natural feel of the bottom one.

Mistymonday · 07/11/2020 04:09

Top is my preference by a fair bit - it’s prettier, more on trend, brightens the room and will be more robust. White also really makes the rest of a room pop. Weirdly it shows dirt less than dark wood too.

Mummyoflittledragon · 07/11/2020 04:16

My initial reaction was the bottom until I zoomed in on the photos. But I think the top is more on trend and easier to maintain. No way would I go for wood on work tops. So on this basis, I would go for the top. I now prefer it. As someone with various high maintenance fixtures and fittings in my home, unless you have a lot of time and energy, you will regret going for it.

I personally prefer the bottom but it sounds like you like the top one best? How would you feel if either one was unavailable? Say for example, they said sorry the top one is not available anymore, would you be disappointed?

Notarealmum · 07/11/2020 04:24

Hmm, I actually think a darker (but not too dark) grey would look better than both.

Ginandplatonic · 07/11/2020 04:24

Definitely go for quartz over laminate, it’s much nicer and more practical. The only reservation I would have is that colour-wise in the picture you posted it looks like a cool white quartz with warm white/cream cupboards which I’m not too sure about. Sometimes those visualisers are deceptive though, so if you’ve seen the samples together in real life and the undertones don’t clash go for it!

Notarealmum · 07/11/2020 04:27

Just to add, I inherited a white work top (on the point of changing it) and it’s a bugger to keep clean. It’s plain white mind you.

LadyB49 · 07/11/2020 04:29

I have a cream kitchen with walnut wood laminate work tops and still love it after 13 years. Not a mark on it and very practical. With a white worktop I'd be afraid of beetroot curry/ketchup stains.

YellowEllis · 07/11/2020 04:30

These are our cupboards and the snowy Ibiza quartz worktops together (not my kitchen, but ours is a similar shape)

Would our sink still work with a quartz worktop?

The latest picture is too cold and I wouldn’t want that. But you have the grey tiles and wood floors on yours, which softens it.

Muddyinthesticks · 07/11/2020 04:33

Top one. I agree, laminate worktops are awful.

Mummyoflittledragon · 07/11/2020 04:35

I’d go for under counter with drain grooves as per the 2nd pic you posted. Your one could look cold.
CovidAnni · 07/11/2020 04:35

Bottom. Now go to sleep!

YellowEllis · 07/11/2020 04:37

Unfortunately that was the best sink we could afford, if we're going for the quartz worktop there's definitely no extra to splurge on sinks. I've been leaning towards the quartz worktop to warm the room up, we'll have the bright oak floors and internal doors, the green/cream tiles and it's dual aspect so I don't think it would be too cold. We also have 'warm white' spotlights under all the cabinets

I love marble countertops and white kitchen so top BUT you still need a contracting color like the flor

Ginandplatonic · 07/11/2020 04:41

Oh yes that’s much better. Definitely go with the quartz. Hmm I’d probably not have gone for that sink with a white quartz counter top, would have gone for undermounted stainless, but if you’ve already got it I’m sure it will be fine. It’s easy to really obsess over every tiny thing, I’ve done it too, but when it’s finished and you’re used to it you realise that any of your options would look so much better than what was there before that it really doesn’t matter as much as it seems to at the time. Go with your gut. And don’t second guess yourself. Smile

Blueberries0112 · 07/11/2020 04:41

If you plan on white countertop, look into getting a darker floor.

Coffeecak3 · 07/11/2020 04:44

I like the dark worktop but both are nice.
But if I'm honest I struggled to see past the wall tiles.

Coffeeand · 07/11/2020 04:46

Prefer bottom. Id assume the quartz is more spendy though? I’d rather have good quality laminate wood than actual wood, which is a bugger to live with. We did our kitchen a year or so ago and went for decent laminate which looks great and is easy to care for. Cheap laminate looks crap.
It really doesn’t matter a lot, it’s easy to get bogged down in a call like this but there’s no wrong answer!

Coffeeand · 07/11/2020 04:47

Also, go to sleep. I’m not in the uk so it’s not even close to bed time yet...

Blueberries0112 · 07/11/2020 04:47

Like this (I tried to google a kitchen with a lighter shade of blue backsplash and this is close enough. The flooring can be a little lighter but I like it as it is

Bottom. But I love contrasting colours. Makes things interesting.

YellowEllis · 07/11/2020 04:49

Honestly I'm doubting everything! The kitchen was what I was most excited about and I don't like it. I just don't like my plan and I don't know what to change. Dh is getting annoyed and embarrassed at me wanting to go back and change everything but I just know in my gut that it's wrong.
