Would a barking dog next door put you off buying a house?

Yes. We bought a house with a dog next door. We visited several times, different times of the day and night to check for noise, nothing.
First night there, lights on and barking, right by the house, non- stop. Next door house was some was off so was just down by their gate.

Every time we left the house, used the garden, put a light on, barking.
They finally sold up not long before we moved.

Viewed a lovely house not long after, all going well until the constant yap of a small dog started, could hear it through the thick walls. No way.

WildHorsesRunInMe · 04/11/2020 14:49

Yes, it would. I have neighbours across from me whose dogs tend to bark at night. Can't imagine living next door to them.

Lardlizard · 04/11/2020 14:59

Yes 100 percent !

HunkyPunk · 04/11/2020 15:17

Yes it would put me off hugely. We have next door (semi-detatched) neighbours who moved in with a dog several years ago. Their dog (lovely, with friendly temperament) doesn't really bark, but cries and howls like the Hound of the Baskervilles whenever he is left alone, sometimes for hours at a time. I have mentioned it, but not a lot they can do, I suppose. Not that they seem overly bothered. They are quite self-centred generally, about doing what they want to do, when they want to do it (e.g. drilling on party wall at 9.30 pm on a Sunday!)

It has me scouring the property pages for any affordable detached houses, even though we've lived here v happily for 20 years!

Serin · 04/11/2020 16:53

Yes.
We once didn't buy a house because the house next door had noisy geese.

vinoandbrie · 04/11/2020 16:54

God yes.

JacobReesMogadishu · 04/11/2020 16:58

99% of the time yes.

Saying that my dog will bark/growl if she’s out in the garden and there are strange people in next doors garden. She knows the neighbours and won’t bark at them or if they’re there with guests. But she barks at the window cleaner and would bark at strangers viewing a house. However I would bring her in straight away.

Similar is that she will bark at anyone who comes up our drive and sometimes people coming up next doors drive. She sits in the bay window on guard duty.

So again someone viewing a house could get the impression there’s a really noisy dog next door but the reality is she only barks a few minutes a day and if I’m in is told to button It promptly!

JenniferFromTheBlock · 04/11/2020 17:09

Yes, it is annoying, and becoming intolerable now my neighbours have 3 dogs. The original 2 didn't bother me, they'd bark at the postman and stuff. But this new one, non stop extremely loud barking all day whether they're in or out.

If I had known I'd never have bought this house.

Dowser · 04/11/2020 17:30

Omg yess

vanillandhoney · 04/11/2020 17:33

It depends.

Dogs bark - it's one of the ways they communicate. The odd bark at the door or as a greeting is fine imo - it's normal. But constant barking all day long is different and very off-putting.

BikerWife · 04/11/2020 17:36

Yes... But I suppose then you could buy a house without a barking dog next door and someone new could move in with a dog or the previously quiet neighbours could get a dog that's noisy Confused

CurbsideProphet · 04/11/2020 17:36

When we bought our house we discovered that the sellers had dogs that barked 24 /7.
Our neighbours have admitted that they were absolutely thrilled when we bought the house and they realised that we don't have dogs 😀

FippertyGibbett · 04/11/2020 17:36

Yes

kennelmaid · 04/11/2020 17:37

Yes, and I say that as a dog owner myself.

FlatScreenTV01 · 04/11/2020 18:05

Yes 100%

Nicolastuffedone · 04/11/2020 18:06

Yes. And a trampoline in the garden!

SlopesOff · 06/11/2020 23:17

@Gifgif

Depends how much they barked. It would be less likely to be burgled.
Or the house would be burgled to steal the dog.
Itslookinglikeabeautifulday · 06/11/2020 23:19

Yes definitely. It already did a few years back.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 06/11/2020 23:20

Absolutely.

It's very hard to live with, there's nothing you can do (and they usually come with inconsiderate owners who stick them outside) and it's becomes a 'thing' you never stop getting cross about.

Lovelynaughtycat · 06/11/2020 23:28

Yes
A couple of dog owners I know are completely oblivious to the noise even very late at night and don't think about their neighbours at all.

DishingOutDone · 07/11/2020 00:06

But if you were just viewing a house and a dog barked how does that then mean it’s going to be a problem - do you mean any barking at all even a woof? Or do people assume all dogs bark all the time? If a dog barks at the postman would you not want to buy the house next door just based on that?

caringcarer · 07/11/2020 00:12

Yes, I once went to view a house that had 2 massive fierce dogs next door barking their heads off and growling. I didn't even go in I just rang estate agent and explained why.

LolalovesLondon · 07/11/2020 07:42

If I could hear the bark from next door whilst viewing I would’ve put off. Yes.
There is no way of knowing if the dog barks occasionally or all the time.

LolalovesLondon · 07/11/2020 07:43

‘would be’

TheSeedsOfADream · 07/11/2020 07:43

Absolutely yes.
Also the trampoline.
And decking.
