Please help

OP posts:

Sorry I'm out of the loop... What is the OP referring to?

hopeishere · 31/10/2020 08:55

It's mad they drip feed this out over the weekend leaving people fretting and giving space for panic.

I'm in NI we are already in lockdown so it's unclear how this will affect us here.

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 31/10/2020 08:59

@RosieLemonade

So upsetting and stressful. I don’t want to save Christmas. I want to save people’s jobs.
Totally agree. Many Muslims did not get to celebrate Eid with friends and family. We need to approach Xmas in the same way.
totalnamechanger · 31/10/2020 08:59

Also agree with Emeeno . Professionally I know a fair number of young Syrians and others affected by war and displacement and who are having their new lives disrupted again. Their openness and energy bring perspective every day Smile

@etopp

Yes, it's shit, OP.

It's just as well that Christmas is the last thing I'm bothered about, as I haven't had a penny of income since early March so it's not happening for my family anyway.

This morning's news is the worst I could have heard. You are not alone.

You are not alone either. Flowers

The reality is Xmas has already been ruined for swathes of people.

Urghhhh.

Ginnymweasley · 31/10/2020 09:05

Switch off the news, hide news pages from fb/twitter etc. Focus on something that will make you happy and keep your mind busy. I know it's harder than it seems but try not to focus on things you can't control. Its halloween and the weather is shit so I'm gonna make some halloween crap with the kids and then snuggle up and watch halloween films.

Lovemusic33 · 31/10/2020 09:19

OP, I’m trying to handle it by telling myself that not much will change for me during lockdown, I will still go to work, my kids will still go to school, I don’t need to go to shops other than for food (not the end of the world), I won’t see my family indoors for a month but I can video call them, it’s only a month. Not much will change.

I’m more upset by the news of the Earth quake in Turkey/Greece, many people are trapped, many have died, lots their homes and families 😢, we are safe.

BogRollBOGOF · 31/10/2020 09:21

In the absence of a drug to make me hibernate until Easter, I've planted up pots with bulbs and winter bedding so there is something cheerful to look at and something to look forwards to. It's small, but it's reliable.

kwest · 31/10/2020 09:25

What possible difference will another lockdown make when obviously the three months in March didn’t help and the local lockdowns aren’t helping either. Otherwise we’d not be looking at another national lockdown. We can’t keep doing this. It’s destroying people’s livelihoods. And yes, that is as important as lives. Those of you lucky enough to have been furloughed or who would be unaffected by having NO income for 3 months simply do not understand what that’s like. There are people still out there that haven’t earned anything for 7 months. We can’t keep doing the lockdown hokey-kokey.

The purpose is to keep hospitals functional not to eliminate the virus. So that's that they're trying to do.
BlossomCat · 31/10/2020 09:35

I've been thinking about ways to get through this winter, mentally and physically.
I saw a very useful article a couple of weeks ago, that challenged my mindset about the long dark days, and am determined to try and embrace the positives about being in lockdown at this time of year by thinking like a Scandinavian and making my life more Hygge.

www.theguardian.com/science/2020/sep/26/dreading-a-dark-winter-lockdown-think-like-a-norwegian

Thoughts that have gone through my mind this morning are; we got through this once, we can do it again, with the knowledge that it will end at some point.
If my family lockdown, and prevent a rise in cases, the hospitals may not be overwhelmed therefore if someone goes in with appendicitis or something similar, they will get appropriate treatment and be less likely to suffer serious/catastrophic outcomes.

I am angry about how the news has broken, being leaked to the press before the public are fully informed, but that is out of my control, so I've turned the news off.

I have a roof over my head, I am not living in a tent in a refugee camp, I know where my loved ones are, and have means of communication.

My job will not exist in a lockdown, I have been back at work for 3 weeks after 7 months of furlough, so I am worried about money, but we will cross that bridge when we come to it.

Look after yourself OP,

JamminDoughnuts · 31/10/2020 09:37

please switch off the news.
count your blessings op.

CurlsandCurves · 31/10/2020 09:40

I’ve got an interview on Tuesday. For a job in what I imagine will be deemed a non essential shop. I got a bit down this morning when I saw the news, after being sooooo excited to be asked to interview yesterday.

I’m trying to stay positive and hope that a) they want to hire me for the role and b) the business will still be able to afford to hire me and reopen after this.

confusedx3 · 31/10/2020 09:41

I know people eye roll at this (or they have in my experience!) but keep your vitamin D intake up. seriously. not only is it brilliant for your immune system but it should keep your mood levels on an even keel. also remind yourself you got through the last one. and this cant last forever.

WeCameToDance · 31/10/2020 09:43

kwest completely agree.

I never comment on these threads because of the inevitable lynching when disagreeing with lockdown means the single handed murder of swarths of innocents Hmm.
When does the price of peoples mental health become to great? The people who are living in pain because routine surgery has been cancelled and doctors appointments are unnecessary unless it’s an emergency.
My dad waited a month in agony with a tooth infection that had spread to every bone in his jaw before he could get an appointment. Family members who are struggling to keep their businesses afloat have had to go on antidepressants to get them through the day.
We cannot keep living like this.

Emmie12345 · 31/10/2020 09:50

Sorry OP

Just stay away from the news maybe

I’m gonna go to the gym whilst still can !

Toptotoeunicolour · 31/10/2020 10:04

I honestly think now the end is in sight, with the vaccines hopefully giving longer term immunity and being effective across all age groups and being ready by next spring. Also, infection is giving longer term T cell immunity which is great news. By next spring it will be almost over. Just sit tight as much as you can through the winter.

Enoughnowstop · 31/10/2020 10:04

What possible difference will another lockdown make

It means people who need health services for car accidents, drilling through their hands whilst doing DIY, heart attacks, burst appendix, emergency admissions due to the onset of things like type 1 diabetes will still get the help they require. The help none of us think we will ever need until we need it.

If people can’t get any help, panic will set in. If panic sets in, we run the risk of civil disobedience and worse. Boris has mentioned putting the army on the streets at least once recently.

There is huge empathy for people who’s working lives have been destroyed because of this. I don’t know why you would think otherwise. On the other hand, there is little empathy for those who are stepping into the unknown every time they go to work - health professionals and teachers in particular.

ConquestEmpireHungerPlague · 31/10/2020 10:08

So upsetting and stressful. I don’t want to save Christmas. I want to save people’s jobs.

But...what about saving people's lives??

It won’t. Boris can’t legislate beyond England on this. So unless you were planning to head there, nothing will change for you.

Me too - and lives.
LastGoldenDaysOfSummer · 31/10/2020 10:16

I don't want to save Christmas, I want to save people's lives.

I don't want the hospitals overwhelmed.

Lockdown hard - everything except vital service closed, including schools and universities - before we get overwhelmed.

Rufus27 · 31/10/2020 10:19

Am feeling the same way, OP.

DP lost his job in March . It has been impossible for him to find another in the same profession (airline pilot) . After 150 job applications, he finally got a job last month. However it’s a zero hours contract, minimum wage, and the company will close down if it’s a full lockdown so he won’t be paid a penny.
We have two young DC with SEN, so I can’t work more than part time.
I worry for DP’s mental health - I’m dreading another lockdown ....

CaveMum · 31/10/2020 10:21

I don’t think it’s helpful to tell people that there are other people worse off in the world. People’s feelings are valid, unhappiness is not a competition.
