I am wondering how shops are managing this?

I am 30 but only look 25ish and before the pandemic was often asked or ID. I haven't been asked for months.
How are shops deciding who to ID when everyone is wearing a mask?

I was nearly in Waitrose last week.

As I'm 42 I was delighted, but the assistant then looked closer and waved me through

Asked before masks became compulsory..still asked now. Young eyes maybe? Though never been asked to take it off to check the ID is mine lol so just very trusting?

cheerfulpanda · 30/10/2020 15:39

Yes, 28 here.

I’ve been asked to pull my mask down to check my face against my ID. Local Tesco even has little stickers by the self service tills warning you might have to remove your mask for an ID check.

Always asked before masks. Never been asked since. Although, in fairness, I think I've only bought two or three items which would normally require ID in that whole time.

15 year old me would have definitely been chancing it for an Orange Bacardi Breezer

PotteringAlong · 30/10/2020 15:40

Yes! I’m 40! I was thrilled! Grin

JanewaysBun · 30/10/2020 15:41

Yes they ask you to pull your mask down - 34 (you would think they would see me being harassed by two toddlers and think "meh she needs that wine" Grin)

TheVeryHungryTortoise · 30/10/2020 15:41

I'm 26 but look about 18. I was asked to pull down my mask yesterday in Sainsbury's for an ID check.

CaptainCarp · 30/10/2020 15:45

Yes they asked me to pull the mask down a bit, but it still covered my mouth.

I'm over 30 so I'm taking it as compliment that I don't have eye lines 😂 Grin

Twickerhun · 30/10/2020 15:47

Yes! I’m in my 40s and have been id in a mask a few times, always by people young enough to be my children! It’s amazing.

Frazzled13 · 30/10/2020 15:50

Yep. Once they asked me to pull my mask down so they could check the ID was mine, the other time they were ok with my mask staying up.

Ha!

I got ID all the way till I was 40. When I got asked I got sooo excited they realised I was a lot older than I looked and would usually wave me through

It's truly disappointing!!!

HunterHearstHelmsley · 30/10/2020 15:56

Yesterday. I'm 35! The same woman has served me many times in the past also. Luckily I had my purse with ID. I was only taking my phone originally.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 30/10/2020 16:00

Waitrose should introduce this as a service you know. ID checking 40-year-olds to make them feel happy ...

IceniWarrior · 30/10/2020 16:03

40s. Had my can of redbull removed and transaction cancelled without asking for ID! Couldn't believe it. Just said I couldn't have it. I am very small.

Ohdoleavemealone · 30/10/2020 16:09

Maybe I am finally looking my age then!

OP posts:
WitchOfTheWest · 30/10/2020 16:12

I work in a shop and we've been told to be extra careful about IDing people. It's much harder to tell people's ages when half the face is covered.

InTheLongGrass · 30/10/2020 16:13

My Mum (nearly 70) got ID'd yesterday. She was very pleased!!!

KatyaZamolodchikova · 30/10/2020 16:17

33 and got IDd in Morrisons. I asked if she wanted me to move my mask and she said if I didn’t mind. Was for about 3 seconds and no one anywhere near anyway. My 14 year old step daughter very generously suggested that she might have thought we were sisters as we both have brown hair, fringes and glasses. (I had just bought her a cakey treat so appreciate this may have influenced the comment 😂) I was buying among other things two bottles of wine for a tenner!

MillieVanilla · 30/10/2020 16:17

Yes in Home Bargains last week
DH was buying lighters.
Assistant turns to me and goes "ID"
No please, no pleasantries, just that.
For starters I'm 39 and I've not done my grey as hell roots since June.
He laughed and said don't be ridiculous
She got all pissy so he said you know what, don't bother and told her to remove the lighters. She then said I can't serve you any of it.
In the end another employee came over, told her it was her break, passed us the lighters and said not to take any notice.
I hate bloody masks now it's winter, all the stores have their heating up and I end up with a headache now.

anniversarywoes · 30/10/2020 16:17

I have! I'm 49! I skipped out of the shop with joy Grin

It's the sort of service you would expect from Waitrose to be fair Grin
Tinkletwat · 30/10/2020 16:17

39 and IDed for alcohol free cava! Skipped out of the supermarket and told her she'd made my day!

myhobbyisouting · 30/10/2020 16:22

Went to the shop with my dad back when it wasn't illegal to see him (them where t'days).

The shop assistant ask him "you're not buying the beer for the girl are you?"

Hahaha I've been legal well over 20 years Wink

Curlygirl06 · 30/10/2020 16:32

I work in a shop (very naice one!) and it's surprisingly difficult to judge with masks on.
If I have to ask someone to drop their mask and they then look "of age ", I tell them they have young eyes! Makes people's day.

ToastyFingers · 30/10/2020 16:37

I've had to ask loads of people to pull down their mask or show ID when selling alcohol. Most people are good natured about it thankfully.
