If you're having a can of soup...

... do you have a whole can or just half?

I've just noticed that a serving is half a can - Surely that isn't enough? I've been over indulging in soup for years!

@BertieBotts

You add milk to condensed soups, usually, not ordinary ones.
Campbells cream of chicken, you add chopped fine mushrooms and white wine, extra seasoning, you can pass it off as quite posh! I only buy Covent Garden Smoked Haddock chowder, the other week I had half a carton in the fridge and put it into the mircowave to zap hot. At the same time a emptied left over leek and potato from a pan into a bowl ready for the fridge, the microwave pinged and, I'm sure you're ahead of me, I poured the chowder onto the l and p. I don't recommend it!

If it doesn't all fit in the bowl then surely you eat some then put the rest in. It's hardly rocket science Halloween Confused
Well yes....but that wasn't the point I was trying to make. Rather that a whole tin of soup is more than you would expect to eat in one sitting. Well it is in our house anyway. I am realising that we are in the minority.
Tittie · 26/10/2020 13:56

Half a can is not enough (and requires a nice crusty roll to go alongside), but a whole can is that bit too much imo.

WaxOnFeckOff · 26/10/2020 13:57

Depends, if it's my whole lunch with just a bit of bread then I'll have the whole one, if I just want a little bit to dip my baguette in then I have to persuad someone else to hav soup and just nick a bit. Before my boys were large teens/adults, i'd heat two cans between the 3 of us but I'd have maybe just a third of a tin or so in total, just to use for dipping.

A half tin is surely just for children or those with small appetites?

Or buy some bigger bowls, mine would certainly hold a full carton
NotTerfNorCis · 26/10/2020 14:00

A full can, unless sharing it with someone else (in which case would need a lot of bread to go with it).

QueenOfPain · 26/10/2020 14:01

We have one can between 2 but I always give my husband, or my son if I'm sharing with him, more than half, probably nearer two thirds as half isn't quite enough for them.

Assume this ^^ pp is referring to an 800ml catering tin. If not there’s real issues there with her only managing 100mls of soup at a meal time Hmm

AmuckAmuckAmuck · 26/10/2020 14:03

The whole tin, because otherwise the fridge ends up a graveyard of half empty cans of various stuff I never get around to eating the other half of.

Had to laugh at DH last night when I pulled a tin of rice pudding out of the cupboard and he asked if I was having half of it. You'd think he's have learned after 25 years 😂

OrangeBananaFish · 26/10/2020 14:04

A full can of course with either 2 slices of toast or bread depending on the soup. I don't look at portion sizes (as I assume neither do a lot of people)

IHaveBrilloHair · 26/10/2020 14:05

I eat tinned soup from a mug, I find it comforting when I'm not feeling great so topping up is needed.
Homemade goes in a bowl, I have fancy pants Le Creuset ones with lidsHalloween Grin

QueenOfPain · 26/10/2020 14:05

I have a full tin and probably two bits of bread or a bagel with it.

mercutio12 · 26/10/2020 14:07

I have half a can but with loads of bread and butter.

Orcus · 26/10/2020 14:08

Two thirds, because I'm fucking awkward.

yorkshirepudddiing · 26/10/2020 14:08

Assuming we are talking the normal 400g size, not those smaller, one person cans that is. I wouldn't give anyone a whole can though. You can't even fit a full can in a normal sized bowl!
Wow! You'd have less than half a tin for a meal? That's really not enough for it to be a meal.

A 400g tin is technically two servings but I think considering how low calorie most soups are then one tin is right for one person.

LuckyAmy1986 · 26/10/2020 14:08

Yes. With some bread though. And for lunch. We have our main meal in the evening

Ah ok, with bread. I thought you meant just the soup.

IceniWarrior · 26/10/2020 14:12

Make my own but if I have a can, have the whole one. However, I'm convinced back in the day we use to have half!

AdoraBell · 26/10/2020 14:13

Whole can here, I buy Baxter’s soup and they all seem to be 1 serving.

copernicium · 26/10/2020 14:15

This annoys me as I find half a can is too little but a full can is too much, and then I feel guilty about wasting some.

OldEvilOwl · 26/10/2020 14:16

Half a tin is not enough, but a whole can is too much. I like those smaller cans that are supposed to be one serving but buying a bigger one is cheaper usually. Same with beans, I like the little tins but they aren't any cheaper for less - annoying

vanillandhoney · 26/10/2020 14:17

Definitely a whole can. Half would be fine as a starter with bread, but if you're having it as a meal, it's definitely not enough. Half a can of soup is barely 120 calories - it's nothing!

Snackasaurus · 26/10/2020 14:18

A whole can Grin

AldiAisleofCrap · 26/10/2020 14:18

@xoxogossipgirl2020 it’s definitely a tin , Coke et al are contained in cans.

CheetasOnFajitas · 26/10/2020 14:19

Tesco Tuscan bean, whole can easily in one bowl. 210 calories.

If you're having a can of soup...
Kolsch · 26/10/2020 14:24

I make my own soup with leftovers, which i have a big bowlful of with a couple of slices of toast.

Camomila · 26/10/2020 14:24

half with some buttered toast/cheese on toast
