If you're having a can of soup...

... do you have a whole can or just half?

I've just noticed that a serving is half a can - Surely that isn't enough? I've been over indulging in soup for years!

@karala

I might have a teaspoonful if I was particularly hungry but I wouldn't need to eat anything else for the rest of the day

Oh happy days - over 175 posts about soup portions. Complete with competitive undereating (lightheartedly, obviously) and grammar wars about can v tin.

Half a can with a full round of sandwiches

mogloveseggs · 26/10/2020 14:37

However if it's a chunky one I never get it right-first half is the watery stuff, second half is all the chunky bits. I never remember to shake it first Hmm

@xoxogossipgirl2020

Why is nobody pointing out that it’s a tin, do people people call it a can of soup?!?! Where have I been all my life??!?!
Yes! This. Full can btw.
Sgtmajormummy · 26/10/2020 14:41

I’m also in the “two cans for three people” camp. With leftover Sunday gammon ham sandwiches to hark back to my student days in Dublin.

“Sewp and Sangwidges”. Aaaaah!

Ninkanink · 26/10/2020 14:41

I actually call it a tin, I said can in my answer because that’s what the OP said.

Feedingthebirds1 · 26/10/2020 14:43

Isn't the fact that the tin/can is in the cupboard enough to fill you up?

I still have a can from 1995, I just look at it when I'm hungry.

steppemum · 26/10/2020 14:45

@SoupDragon

You can't even fit a full can in a normal sized bowl!

you can.

dh and I usually share a can.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 26/10/2020 14:48

We had soup at lunch today - one can between me and DP, plus two slices each of hot buttered toast. If I was on my own, I would eat the whole can, with one slice of toast.

I think I use both interchangeably. I can't work out which I use most often now. I'm sure it was a tin can when I was growing up though.

Is there any difference in terms of nutrition between a tin of soup and one of the soups from the chilled section of say aldi or Lidl?

I buy a couple of these a week since wfh and have half with lunch. Full one too much, half not really enough. Haven't had a tin of soup in decades. I usually get one chicken and veg and one pancetta and lentil.

Ninkanink · 26/10/2020 14:58

I used to say can because I used to speak American English which is what I first learned (being Danish I learned English as a second language). Since living in the U.K. for the past 20-odd years I’ve made the effort to switch over to English, so would say tin as a matter of course.

Soups in all formats vary widely. You need to read individual cans, cartons and tubs to answer this. Generally a tinned/canned soup will contain more preservatives though I think.
Fink · 26/10/2020 15:02

I make my own soup, but I'd have a big bowl full of it and give a substantial portion to dc (if it's a whole meal not a starter). Obviously it's lower sugar and salt than a shop bought one, but it's still a decent sized serving.

acerred · 26/10/2020 15:03

@copernicium

This annoys me as I find half a can is too little but a full can is too much, and then I feel guilty about wasting some.
The thing is if you eat it when you are already satisfied with the amount you've had it's still wasted, the difference is the waste going on a cumulative increase in your weight rather than into a bin. Obviously a little bit of soup isn't going to make that much difference but apply the same principle to the last biscuit in the pack.
itssquidstella · 26/10/2020 15:06

A whole can of soup (although it's a bit too much, but half a can isn't enough for me and DP would expire from starvation on sight), but only half a pot of fresh soup from the chilled section - I think those are 600ml.

Always with bread though. Today the bread had pâté on it, too.

Graciebobcat · 26/10/2020 15:08

Depends on what soup. I tend to make soup though rather than open cans and have a big portion. Vegetable soup is hardly calorific though so I don't worry about the portion size too much unless it has a lot of pulses or potato in it.

notalwaysalondoner · 26/10/2020 15:09

I find this with so many things - half is too little, all is too much. Soup, pasta portions that are supposed to be for 2 etc. I would have all of it for soup, often I wind up having 2/3 which is just annoying...

IHaveBrilloHair · 26/10/2020 15:11

I'm sharing this with 25 other people.
I've just looked at it and I'll be full for a month at least.

You look at a whole can? I have a friend who I call up and she tells me about the can of soup she can see.

Really? only 25 people? Shock That would feed at least 43.5 people here! Confused

I usually have a whole tin but would probably have half a tin if I was having it with something else like as a starter or with a sandwich. Today I had half of one of those fresh pots of soup.
