What's a 'dressed' fish?

WhatamessIgotinto · 24/10/2020 14:50

Arrived in Scotland and it's fish and chips for tea tonight. I have no idea what the difference between a regular haddock and a 'dressed' haddock is! I've never heard of it, help me Scottish Mnetters! 😊

Echoing, obviously ...

BLASTPROCESSING · 24/10/2020 15:53

I don't like fish but even I'm horrified at the idea of skin-on fish from the chippy.

spacegirl86 · 24/10/2020 15:55

I'm a Scot living in England and I have never got the whole skin on thing down here. It's gross.

taking their tom kitten to the vets to be dressed (ie neutered)

Is it only males that are dressed ?
I've heard people say "Is it dressed"? ( No it;s naked Grin )

Fish I have no clue but there was a chippy under the bridge (Argyle Street) that sold deep fried pizza . Crispy base but most of the topping slid off !

dementedpixie · 24/10/2020 16:05

Is that the Blue Lagoon chippy? Its called Pizza Crunch. Most Scottish chippies sell it

Same, though I'm still in Scotland. WTF is that about? Haddock is so much better without the skin.

Fried pizza is just a fried pizza. Pizza crunch is pizza fried in batter (and is absolutely delicious as well).

Devlesko · 24/10/2020 16:10

Usually skinned, boned, head and tail off.
Or if in a fancy hotel it does mean dressed with lots of additions like rose tomatoes or slices of cucumber etc on the flesh.

Although I also don't understand why you'd want a pizza crunch/deep fried pizza.

dementedpixie · 24/10/2020 16:12

I've never had the deep fried pizza or pizza crunch. I do like a king rib supper though

IHaveBrilloHair · 24/10/2020 16:18

Pizza crunch is one of my guilty pleasures.

florascotia2 · 24/10/2020 16:30

70 I think it can apply to female animals as well, but am not 100% sure.
The person who used the expression was in their eighties, so it's not new, and maybe almost obsolete (except for fish and crab).

dementedpixie · 24/10/2020 16:34

When I was younger we used to say that a cat was dressed. It referred to female as well as male cats

BLASTPROCESSING · 24/10/2020 16:36

"Although I also don't understand why you'd want a pizza crunch/deep fried pizza."

Only someone who's never had a pizza crunch would say that! Wink

WhatamessIgotinto · 24/10/2020 16:48

Are you prepared for being asked about a ‘fish supper’?

Um .. what is this 'supper' of which you speak?? 😂

DS is delighted because the menu says he can have a smoked sausage in batter. Never seen him so happy. 😂

I'm on the west coast and I actually don't think I've been anywhere more gorgeous. It's pissing down with rain and I'm reliably informed that it's blowing what is known as a 'hoolie', but man it's beautiful.

A fish supper is fish and chips. The supper part means with chips. A single fish is just a piece of fish.

dementedpixie · 24/10/2020 16:54

Although a single sausage is often 2 sausages Grin (but no chips)

Devilesko · 24/10/2020 22:01

A fish supper is not fish and chips, you'd do well not to ask for one.
Especially if being served by a woman Grin

PARunnerGirl · 24/10/2020 22:09

I have never known “dressed fish” to mean “prepared” (I.e. gutted, head and tail off etc) on a chippy menu... that is just a standard expectation surely! 😂 Here in Scotland, it definitely means dressed in breadcrumbs rather than dipped in batter.

Sounds like a perfect evening, OP!

IHaveBrilloHair · 24/10/2020 22:14

A smoked sausage supper is great, as is black pudding, or white pudding, or haggis, or king rib, actually anything.
You need to get pickled onions, they should be the gold star brand, bloody lush.

Mollypolly2610 · 24/10/2020 22:24

A single fish is a “mermaid” Grin

To be fair it didn't star in the OP if the dresses fish was being offered in a chip shop or raw from some fancy fishmonger. Here in Scotland I've never heard of it in either context though. (And I'm quite familiar a chippy or 2) OP I hope you enjoyed your meal! 😋

What? Yes it is. I'm not even sure what else you are implying?! That's exactly how you order fish and chips here regardless of gender Confused

OllyBJolly · 24/10/2020 22:41

Dressed is in fish dressing - fluorescent orange breadcrumbs. In the west we call it “special fish”.

All the fish in the chippies are gutted with heads and tails removed. Do people think we’re that tough we eat deep fried intact fish?! Confused
