What's a 'dressed' fish?

Arrived in Scotland and it's fish and chips for tea tonight. I have no idea what the difference between a regular haddock and a 'dressed' haddock is! I've never heard of it, help me Scottish Mnetters! 😊

I should not have opened this thread! I am now craving a fish supper drowned in salt and sauce, with a side of smoked sausage and pizza crunch 😋 I'm sorry southerners but fish and chips aren't right without sauce and half done with the skin on!

This website teaches you how to order fish and chips in Scotland without looking like a tourist!!

Mistake #7 Eating Breaded Fish No… just no! If you’re going to get fish and chips, you need to get battered fish and chips. The traditional way is the best way! It’s nice and crispy, almost flakey, and goes so well with the fish! And with that, get the vinegar and salt on it too.. again, just go with the local way instead of thinking something isn’t going to match your taste buds!

Was in England recently and had fish and chips and was horrified to find it had skin on 🤮. I’d spent ages finding a chippy that did haddock not cod (also 🤮, see previous threads on fish worms, I remember these from a fisherman neighbour who used to gift us cod) The skin on the haddock was a very unpleasant surprise.

Never heard of a dressed fish in a chippy though so learned something new tonight. It’s just called breaded haddock here (Fife). Smoked fish suppers are lush if you get a chance to try one

They mention “chippy shops” frequently, so are a bit questionable I’d say! Halloween Grin

@Devilesko

A fish supper is not fish and chips, you'd do well not to ask for one. Especially if being served by a woman Grin
What? Confused

"Chippy shops" "ketchup" "haddock supper" that article is full of nonsense Grin

We all know the correct order from the "chippy" is "a fish supper with salt and sauce!" 😉 said sauce must be chippy brown sauce, never ketchup or tartare!!
Just thinking about it is making my mouth water Grin

FWIW my local takeaway explains exactly what a dressed fish is - we know it as 'special fish'. Contains both batter and breadcrumbs - of course it's Scotland, it must involve batter! Also proves 'supper! Is definitely a legitimate way of ordering fish and chips Smile

In the comments below the article someone points out this error and they take it in good humour -

Having just read your article about top 10 mistakes made when…at Scottish chip shops l noticed you actually made one in your article.its not a “chippy shop” just “chippy”.as in “moan son, awa doon the chippy n get us aw them fish suppers eh”
Amc

dementedpixie · 24/10/2020 23:27

Its either chippy or chip shop not an amalgamation. I have never bought mushy peas either

Away with your Edinburgh nonsense! It's salt and vinegar, ketchup is acceptable but preferably tartare sauce.

@AllPlayedOut 🎣 hook, line and sinker 😂
I'm actually a heathen and only have salt.....god I want a chippy now.

AllPlayedOut · 24/10/2020 23:42

Me too. Of course I would start craving one at almost midnight.

gavisconismyfriend · 24/10/2020 23:48

@sofiessofa you were spot on until you besmirched our chippy sauce! Grin. Food of the Gods!

sofiessofa · 24/10/2020 23:57

Ha ha! I actually grew up on the east coast but have been converted to west coast chippy waysGrin

BLASTPROCESSING · 25/10/2020 00:17

Only easy coast deviants partake of "sauce"!

BLASTPROCESSING · 25/10/2020 00:17

itsBoooisntit · 25/10/2020 01:53

Salt n sauce is obligatory. OBLIGATORY I SAY.

A bottle of Vimto also helps.
