I've recently started working with one of my closest friends and I've discovered

He has a very weird work fake laugh (that I have never heard before!), he speaks entirely in jargon and he is totally in charge!

It is the weirdest thing!! The boy I've known most of my life, flitting from one crisis to the next, totally overthinking every tiny detail, is the big boss who is totally rocking it. I felt almost maternally proud during the meeting!

We are not in the same organisation but our paths will now cross from time to time although virtually for the foreseeable future I would think.

I remember reading some threads earlier in lockdown when people were posting that they were shocked by their partners work persona and today reminded me of that. Anyone else had any home working revelations?

I had this! Friend is lovely but a total shambles. At work - brilliant, creative, driven. Could not have been more surprised!

Must admit, if I heard a friend talking jargon all the time, pride wouldn't be my first emotion. I suspect I'd sit there working out how to tell him he sounded like a total pillock.

It was just so unexpected, it through me a bit.

Not a friend but me. I’m a shambles. My life is chaos and I am a mess. I can barely breathe without feeling like I’m falling apart... but at work, I’m totally on it! I’m organised, exceeding targets, exploring new and creative solutions to problems, able to multi task and actually wuite well liked. I wish I was work me all of the time.

I had the opposite but equally amusing for all concerned. My best friend who knew me as laid back, clever but a bit ditsy was totally shell shocked to see me in work mode.

Think company director, team of over a hundred people. I mean she knew broadly what I did for a living but had never quite considered how I did it.

My dh’s like this. When we were in lockdown he was on lengthy calls, all the jargon spilled out, the way he spoke to everyone to get stuff done. He’s a higher earner, Senior management in construction.
He comes home and he’s bloody useless. I’m surprised if he can tie his own fucking shoelaces.

I have a friend who has recently become a judge. I know her as the crazy girl who gets drunk and skinny dips and it turns out she’s this incredibly thoughtful, wise woman who’s insightful and clear headed and very well respected.

My husband is like this. He absolutely kills it at work. Very successful. At home he can barely sort his breakfast without some sort of catastrophe. And no, he isn't faking it so I do stuff for him - he's always been like this.

I would love to be a psychologist and have the brains to analyse this!! I wonder why it is so different in work and home

My son has a friend who in real life is the sweetest most disorganised man in the world, was as a child. But he is now a tv star. When in tv mode he is a natural and so skilled, organised and put together. We are all busting with pride at his achievements in this field. I know what you mean by motherly pride.

He's also very focused and driven at work and Gets Things Done.

Totally fucking different at home - he can't seem to work anything out by himself unless it's something he's thought of to do himself. Anything else, the thinking-brain wife has to be involved, apparently (In Australia, guide dogs for the blind are called "seeing-eye dogs", so I'm the "thinking-brain wife")

But DH has worked from home a lot for over 10 years, he has a home office, so it's no surprise to me any more!

Your description of his laugh made me laugh. So much so I bloody snorted at the same time. Just call me Peppa 🐷.

My STBX is like this. He can't manage or work within a household budget. He also can't deal with people very well. He isn't able to concentrate on what people are saying for any length of time. He's nice but just isn't strong in these areas.

At work he's sociable, well respected, manages a budget of millions (not kidding) and is responsible for around 800 people (yes, that number), which he got to do by managing smaller teams first and always getting good feedback!

Hearing him in zoom meetings (where I hear the other side, not just him on his phone) was utterly shocking at the beginning of lockdown. There was rapport, he was clearly part of a team and respected. Once I got over the shock, I was happy for him that at least his work life is going well.
