How much rest does my DH need after his wisdom teeth have been removed

wisdomteethbegone · 21/10/2020 14:57

My DH had 2 wisdom teeth removed today. He has planned to spend 3 days in bed to recover (booked them off work)

Does he really need this? He is generally extremely lazy and will do anything to get out of helping with our 4 and 1 year old DC.

When he had the other 2 removed last year I let him rest without disturbing him.

Is he taking the piss or is it needed?

Top or bottom jaw? If top then none at all, except for the usual advice after local anaesthetic.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 21/10/2020 14:59

Depends how much he suffers with pain?

3 days in bed is a bit extreme imo though....

wowfudge · 21/10/2020 14:59

Yeah - not as though he's had a limb lopped off.

Does he need any? I mean l had a c section which is major abdominal surgery, but still up and about the next day.

I’ve had wisdom teeth out. Maybe day and half off work not in bed? Just resting.

Mumblechum0 · 21/10/2020 15:00

I let ds have the rest of the day off school (GA), but he went back in the next day and was fine.

3 days in bed is ridiculous

NiceGerbil · 21/10/2020 15:01

I was a right state after mine. Had all 4 done under GA. the drug they used makes all your muscles cramp up and then they are v painful afterwards- I have an anaesthetist friend who explained about it. And you can't really eat or anything for a while.

Depends how he had them done I suppose!

LetItGoHome · 21/10/2020 15:01

I would think one day off work resting would sound reasonable.

Hopeislost · 21/10/2020 15:02

I had one removed and went straight home and looked after my one year old alone (my DH was working nights at the time). I took some ibuprofen and just got on with it. Three days is excessive!

Zaphodsotherhead · 21/10/2020 15:02

DD1 had all her wisdom teeth out and her jaw broken and reset. She was a bit out of things for two days, but fine on day three, given that she couldn't eat solid food!

Juanmorebeer · 21/10/2020 15:05

Has he had a general anaesthetic? I had the top two done under that and did need the rest of day and next one off work but no pain or problems.

The second two, bottom ones I had taken out on the same day under just local and was so relieved to be without them I just got on with it. Took a paracetamol and went back to work and ate soft foods for a couple of days.

In my opinion he is being RIDICULOUS. But if there has been any complications for instance if they had to fully cut gums open and re stitch to get them out maybe he is a bit sore.

MJMG2015 · 21/10/2020 15:06

In gum or already through?

I had 4 out together many years ago, 2out, 2sub gum.

It was really painful & utterly utterly miserable and my boyfriend at the time looked after me & tried to keep my spirits up, bought me some sweet gifts and was generally an all around star.

He had (before I knew him) had a bad time with his and so knew what I was going through. He was unable to wear his motorcycle Helmet for weeks & weeks.

I've had other friends who were back at work a few days later.

There really isn't a standard period of pain/misery.

I'd say it's probably needed.

On this occasion

But the fact you're even questioning it & say he's lazy & avoids doing his share makes me wonder why the actual hell you're staying with him.

Disfordarkchocolate · 21/10/2020 15:06

I've only ever had one out. That was at the hospital with a local, I worked the rest of the day.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 21/10/2020 15:07

I did one day at home to make sure the bleeding didn’t start up, and for the ache to subside. But was fine, really.

kittykarate · 21/10/2020 15:07

I was fuck all use to anyone after I had 1 wisdom tooth out under GA. I don't know if it was a reaction to the GA but I was basically really dopey , lacking in concentration, lethargic for about a week. I wouldn't have trusted myself with any heavy machinery or root passwords to servers.

MsEllany · 21/10/2020 15:08

I think taking the time off is fine.

Taking the time off and spending it in bed is not. That is lazy.

WooMaWang · 21/10/2020 15:08

There’s a big difference between being off work and deciding he gets 3 days off parenting. He’s clearly taking the piss with the latter.

willowmelangell · 21/10/2020 15:09

Are you suggesting that DH wants 3 days responsibility free, being waited on hand foot and finger? Well, that is the dream.
Throw him a packet of painkillers. See how he gets on.
Does he have form for shuffling around in the dressing gown of doom?

Peaseblossom22 · 21/10/2020 15:09

I had only one taken out ( bottom jaw GA) worst pain I have ever experienced and I have had 3 dc including one EMCS and a forceps and hip surgery and this beat all of them . The pain was overwhelming it was at least 7 days before I felt able to function normally .

I would say though that lying down is bad for tooth pain ,I was told to stay upright as much as possible

Sunnydaysstillhere · 21/10/2020 15:09

Remember he is waaay too weak for sex...
I had 2 out and carried on with my usual day..

NaturalStudy · 21/10/2020 15:10

Good grief. Kick him out of bed and tell him to get on with it. 3 days is ridiculous.

HomesUnderTheSpanner · 21/10/2020 15:10

He's taking the piss! Both times I had this I was back at work the next day (my job involves speaking) and I'm certainly not stoic and have a low pain threshold!

wisdomteethbegone · 21/10/2020 15:10

It was one too and one bottom, both on the same side.

No GA, they just numbed the area. He was in there for about 30 minutes.

I am understanding that he booked 3 days off because last time he struggled to talk a lot and his job is talking all day.

But I think his milking it (me) with the whole "can't get out of bed or keep my eyes open" vibe

Thanks everyone

I've only had the top two out but definitely didn't need 3 days in bed. I felt fine and started a few job the following day.

wannabebump · 21/10/2020 15:12

Had mine out under sedation and had the rest of the day on the couch (feeling wozzy and sorry for myself in equal measures!). I was back up and doing normal stuff the next day. GA is a bit different though, give or take an extra day to recover a bit.

Kind of sounds like he's being lazy though OP!

Some of these comments have really made me laugh and cheered me up!
