How much rest does my DH need after his wisdom teeth have been removed

My DH had 2 wisdom teeth removed today. He has planned to spend 3 days in bed to recover (booked them off work)

Does he really need this? He is generally extremely lazy and will do anything to get out of helping with our 4 and 1 year old DC.

When he had the other 2 removed last year I let him rest without disturbing him.

Is he taking the piss or is it needed?

I had two out (top and bottom) at the same time, took paracetamol and ibuprofen together every 4 hours for 24 hours and was fine during that time and after (and didn't need any painkillers after the first 24 hours).
Then I had the other two out at the same time, did the same thing, no pain or swelling.
3 days in bed is a joke.

Candacewasalwaysright · 21/10/2020 15:40

I had an upper one out about a month ago.

I was told by the dentist to not do anything that would raise my heart rate for 3 days, so that blood wasn't flowing too quickly and therefore help with the clotting process.

The area where the tooth was hurt for a good few days, but the worst pain was actually in my face and that lasted for about a week.

Although I did more resting than usual, at no point did I take to my bed, I just got on with everyday tasks while dosed up on painkillers.

I had all 4 out and it was genuinely one of the worst ops I have had, and I've had a few. I don't know why but it took me a good week to recover. Everyone's different I suppose Confused

Ha ha ha!

Mine when DD1 was six months old (and they were not simple extractions) - the 2 hours it took for the dentist to chisel bits of twisted root and tooth out of my jawbone. Whilst her father was waiting round the corner at his Mum's so he could hand her back to me the moment I staggered out of the chair.

Redwinestillfine · 21/10/2020 15:54

I have had 3 out under local anesthetic and I'd day a couple of hours tops. If it was done under general anesthetic then a day should be fine.

Feminist10101 · 21/10/2020 15:58

I have no wisdom teeth but had a very complicated molar removed this morning. Took an hour, for context.

I drove myself home afterwards and have been working - admittedly from my bed - ever since.

Hoping to be able to take calls tomorrow, all being well.

vanillandhoney · 21/10/2020 16:01

It depends on the position of the teeth, to be honest.

I've had both my top wisdom teeth removed in the last couple of years. The first one took nearly an hour and there's no way I could have gone to work the next day (customer facing retail) - I was on regular painkillers and it hurt to eat or even really open my mouth. It was 2-3 days before I felt properly well again. I was incredibly sore for 48 hours.

The second one was absolutely fine and although I took the rest of the day off, that was at my managers' insistence and I could have easily gone back that afternoon.

FairFridaythe13th · 21/10/2020 16:02

I was ‘lucky’ as mine were all merrily growing sideways so I had to go for general anaesthetic.

BashfulClam · 21/10/2020 16:03

It derives on how the teeth are. My bottom ones were impacted and I was given sedation. My gums were opened and my teeth chipped out of my jawbone then my gums were stitched back up. Day zero once the numbing wire off I was in a works on pain, day 1&2 pain, swelling and I was throwing up as I always do after any kind of anaesthesia. Day 3 (Monday still in pain but manageable) then back to work on the Tuesday. I did have an infection afterwards.

Vik1ng · 21/10/2020 16:05

Sounds like he’s milking it. My DP had one removed by general anaesthetic one afternoon and was back at work the next day.

Sallycinnamum · 21/10/2020 16:07

My God is this a joke?

I had two wisdom teeth out and went back to work the same afternoon!

I did have root canal treatment under sedation though and had to take the day off as I was away with the fairies for a good few hours.

He's making a total mug out of you OP!

bathorshower · 21/10/2020 16:08

Crazzzycat just to make you feel better, DH had 4 teeth (two of them wisdom teeth) out a couple of years ago, and he was in a lot of pain for several days. He wasn't putting it on to get out of parenting either. I think he had a week off work - he was supposed to have a responsible adult with him for 24 hours after the GA anyway.

Scweltish · 21/10/2020 16:09

I’m so surprised at some of these answers! I had two bottom and one top removed in one go. They were impacted and had come up sideways, so the dentist had to smash them up with a chisel where they were imbedded in my gum and pull them out piece by piece. I was in and out in an hour, took two paracetamol when I got home and cracked on with the rest of my day 😳

OperationallySound · 21/10/2020 16:10

The breaking of her jaw and resetting was to insert a plate to push her very small lower jaw forward. The teeth were taken out at the same time as there wasn't room for them in her mouth. She has a deformed lower jaw.

Phew. That makes more sense, I was thinking you might have a good medical negligence case otherwise Wink

Does he have the dressing gown of doom on, though..?

wisdomteethbegone · 21/10/2020 16:24

He doesn't own a dressing gown of doom but he has the equally horrific holey shorts of sorrow

I had 2 out on my lunch break including 6 stitches.

Straight back to work. No meetings for a day

I had mine out at the hospital - stitches. The dentist showed me my tooth with some gum still attached. So swollen and bruised face afterwards but carried on as normal. Make sure he has anti-inflammatories to stop the swelling.

cariaaad · 21/10/2020 16:37

I had the top two removed under GA as they were badly impacted. Was sick from the anaesthetic, got thrush from the prophylactic antibiotics and looked like I'd done 6 rounds with Mike Tyson due to the swelling! Took a good week to recover. I guess it all depends on the position of the teeth and how easy they are to remove.

Just keeping my fingers crossed the bottom ones stay where they are and don't need removal as they are impacted too 😱

nitgel · 21/10/2020 16:38

when i had mine out in the 1980s top and bottom and stitches i was in pain for a few days, i kept chewing my jaw it was pretty awful. I would be very sympathetic for anyone having this done.

wouldntmindbeingmrsw · 21/10/2020 16:38

I had 2 taken out at 11.30am, ate a sandwich at 1pm and fetched my daughter from school at 3.30pm. My brother popped round on the evening with a box of toffees 🤣.

Tell him to man up and get over it.

What about the Hoodie of Despair?
JudgeRindersMinder · 21/10/2020 16:40

@NiceGerbil

I was a right state after mine. Had all 4 done under GA. the drug they used makes all your muscles cramp up and then they are v painful afterwards- I have an anaesthetist friend who explained about it. And you can't really eat or anything for a while.

Depends how he had them done I suppose!

This was me too when I was 18. It took a good fortnight to feel human again, and for the first few days afterwards I was in agony
OooErrThor · 21/10/2020 16:41

I had one out and was a complete mess for a week, not sure whether I was allergic to the anaesthetic. I couldn't look after the DCs and ate nothing for about 4 days. Complete nightmare.

My work colleague had all four out and was back at work the next day!
