How much rest does my DH need after his wisdom teeth have been removed

My DH had 2 wisdom teeth removed today. He has planned to spend 3 days in bed to recover (booked them off work)

Does he really need this? He is generally extremely lazy and will do anything to get out of helping with our 4 and 1 year old DC.

When he had the other 2 removed last year I let him rest without disturbing him.

Is he taking the piss or is it needed?

I had my top one removed under local anaesthetic several years ago and was OK for the first day or two. I def didn't need bed rest or anything. It was only after the 2nd day that the excruciating pain and fever from infection and dry socket hit me!

PhilODox · 21/10/2020 15:13

I had two lower removed from gum under GA. I was very groggy for 24 hours, went back to work after 72 (it had been weekend), then got dry socket and was incapacitated for a week. I literally was in so much pain I could not read or watch TV, or do anything other than groan.
I am far from lazy, but I couldn't do a thing.

wisdomteethbegone · 21/10/2020 15:13

GA is completely different and Understandable!!

I have had that before and it took me a while to feel normal again!

Had two removed was back at work in the afternoon.
What a baby. Grin

The first time I had two out, and both clots dislodged so I ended up with dry socket, which was horrendous and I was in agony for days. It's the worst pain I've ever been in after late stage labour.

The second time the clot stayed thank God, so I was in pain for a day or two, but nowhere near as bad.

He really should take it easy, no smoking and eat and drink as carefully as possible.

wisdomteethbegone · 21/10/2020 15:15

He takes it easy regardless bless him

I'll not refer to my op as I had complications and was in bed for 2 weeks after but obviously that isn't normal.

When my ex had all 4 out under GA he went back to work the next day.

Under normal circumstances 3 days off taking is a bit easy is OK, but 3 days in bed is taking the piss.

Flaunch · 21/10/2020 15:15

I had one of my top ones out and it was no trouble. The other one was truly horrendous (Complicated roots - took an hour to get out 😬) and knocked me about for a week. I was on 4 hourly pain relief the whole time.

I think my bottom 2 will need to come out and if they do I’ll be having some time off!

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 21/10/2020 15:17

I can understand booking time off work - it does make you feel a bit shit and self-conscious too, I found. If you have to talk a lot, or eat in front of other people, then I can easily see why taking the rest of the week off is a good plan.

You don't get three days off parenting though! When I've had mine done (and I've had them all done plus other extractions, no GA though) the day itself is a write-off, then I feel a bit shit the next morning cos I haven't slept. Then it's situation normal, with the help of painkillers.

AdaColeman · 21/10/2020 15:17

If he’s had a GA, he’d possibly need a day taking things easy, as he might still be a bit groggy, but three days in bed resting seems unnecessary.
Are you expected to wait on him hand and foot while he’s in bed? Hmm

OperationallySound · 21/10/2020 15:17

Having read your update, if say that 3 days in bed is definitely excessive.

DD1 had all her wisdom teeth out and her jaw broken and reset. She was a bit out of things for two days, but fine on day three, given that she couldn't eat solid food!

I've never heard of people having their jaw broken for wisdom teeth removal (not deliberately, and it would be a very rare accidental complication) are you sure? Did she have it wired, or plated and screwed?

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 21/10/2020 15:18

I do tend to find though that when people are not lazy, their partners are quite happy for them to take 'time off' for all sorts of reasons. Lazy sods don't get the same courtesy.

LomasLongstrider · 21/10/2020 15:18

I had an emergency c section too and was on my feet/back to normal as soon as they took the cathetar out, but dry socket was a bitch and really knocked me sideways, all I could do was lay in bed and cry and cry with the pain, even after having it packed (until I found raw clove oil which was amazing).

Thatwentbadly · 21/10/2020 15:18

I had a bottom wisdom tooth removed when I was in the first trimester and I had a bit of a lazy weekend. It was mostly the pain that was an issue as I could only have paracetamol. I had it done on Saturday morning so I could recover over the weekend and was teaching on the Monday.

FairFridaythe13th · 21/10/2020 15:20

Its different for different people. I had all 4 out (hospital) and was out the next day, eating pretty much all ok (jaw a bit stiff). Others I know have been sore/off their food for a few days (but still up and about).

doctorhamster · 21/10/2020 15:21

I had a bottom wisdom one taken out a few years ago. I did come home and sleep for a few hours and needed an afternoon nap for a couple of days. I think it was the painkillers making me drowsy!

The breaking of her jaw and resetting was to insert a plate to push her very small lower jaw forward. The teeth were taken out at the same time as there wasn't room for them in her mouth. She has a deformed lower jaw.

And she was up and about and taking nothing stronger than paracetamol after the second day.

DorsetBlueMovie · 21/10/2020 15:24

Had two out under GA and spent half the week watching ER and taking the odd nip of oramorph. God being child-free was bliss Grin

magicstar1 · 21/10/2020 15:24

Haha three days! I had one top and one bottom out with local. I took two paracetamol and had scrambled egg for dinner. Back to normal the next day.

pepperpod28 · 21/10/2020 15:25

I can understand maybe taking the next day off if it's 3 teeth. I can even understand taking 3 days off if, as you say, his job involves a lot of talking. If he is telling you he is unable to get out of bed or open his eyes maybe you should suggest he has had a very extreme and rare reaction to his local anaesthetic and needs to be seen by a medical professional immediately....

Former dental nurse here. He's ripping the arse out of it.

coconuttyhead · 21/10/2020 15:26

I had two removed in the morning and had to go back to work in the afternoon as my boss wouldn’t let me have whole day off! I was fine and the local anesthetic lasts a while. Painkillers after but pain not that bad, no need to rest.
My pain threshold is not great in general! Definitely didn’t need any rest.

B1rthis · 21/10/2020 15:29

Thought u meant children!

AluminumMonster · 21/10/2020 15:33

Depends how he reacts, I find it odd he's scheduling in 3 days regardless. First time I had my bottom wisdom out I was quite physically sick the next day. Years later, top wisdom out during third trimester, took a few paracetamol and was fine.

He's at it!

Grimbot · 21/10/2020 15:34

Oh my god he’s actually taken days off work? I had one removed when I had a 7 week old baby and the only time I had to recover was the 15 mins it took me to get home. He is massively taking the piss.

Crazzzycat · 21/10/2020 15:37

I’m feeling like a real weakling after reading these replies 🙈

I had a wisdom tooth removed a couple of years ago. It was a straightforward extraction with hardly any pain afterwards, but I felt like absolute HELL for days.

I tried to go to work the next day, but was sent home, as apparently I looked like I was about to pass out. I certainly felt like I was barely conscious and I think I had 5 days off in the end 😬
