How much rest does my DH need after his wisdom teeth have been removed

My DH had 2 wisdom teeth removed today. He has planned to spend 3 days in bed to recover (booked them off work)

Does he really need this? He is generally extremely lazy and will do anything to get out of helping with our 4 and 1 year old DC.

When he had the other 2 removed last year I let him rest without disturbing him.

Is he taking the piss or is it needed?

Surely it depends on how he feels after the procedure? Recovery time is variable and if he feels well enough he can always cancel a days leave if he’s feeling up to going in.

A friend of mine had wisdom teeth removed (top and bottom I think) and was a right state afterwards. When I went to pick I’m up the nurse had strapped two latex gloves filled with ice to either side of his face. It was very difficult not to laugh. I practically had to carry him to the car and stayed with him for a couple of days as he was so out of it.

Couldn't eat much for best part of a week due to pain. Was wiped out but partly due to MIL staying with us to 'help' me (run me ragged). Had 4 days off work but not in bed.

I had two out (hadn’t erupted yet) under local. I was extremely sore for about a week. Unfortunately they then got infected and it got worse. I found it worse than my c section

@Zaphodsotherhead - I was off work for six months after having my jaw broken!

With my wisdom teeth, I had top and bottom on one side done and was fine after a few days. Then two weeks later I had the other side done and was really ill for about a week!

pincertoe · 21/10/2020 16:54

I had one side out then then other side week after. Had them done first thing then went to work. Why would you need recovery? Especially 3 days. I did have mine taken out by dentist.

Everyone is different so you won't really know until afterwards. Just because some people are able to go back to work straight after doesn't mean everyone will be. I was about 18 when I had my 2 bottoms ones out under GA. Pain wise I was fine with 4 hourly painkillers, but the GA made me feel like shit for a good few days, and I couldn't eat properly for over a week. The only bad thing was thinking I had some onion stuck after having onion soup, only to realise after I gave it a tug that it was actually a stitch 🤢!

Exasperatedcroc · 21/10/2020 17:17

I had all 4 of mine out as a teenager, babysat my three siblings that night and went to school the next day. I did then fall down the stairs at school after fainting though so perhaps not the best example.

PurpleIsTheColour · 21/10/2020 17:28

I had the top and bottom right ones removed last month-top one was fine once the GA wore away and the bleeding stopped. Bottom one was a completely different story though and I knew on the day after something wasn’t right-had a pulsating pain in the jaw and couldn’t stay still as it was so painful. Went to get checked on day 2 and turned out a dry pocket had formed and I had an infection so had to start antibiotics and was put on stronger painkillers. It definitely hurt a lot more than I imagined it will so you never know until they are removed. I would say though that a lot of the pain is also related to the injections for the GA and in my case I couldn’t laugh for more than 10 days until the area recovers.
Definitely no need to stay in bed for 3 days though!

I had the top two taken out when my DTs were babies. I had it done under local (terrified of dentists) and was back to mothering as soon as I got out. DH took the day off work as I couldn’t drive back, but we went shopping straight after and I had to park the car and it was just like any other day.

I know the bottom ones can be a bit more tricky to remove (which is why the changed from all 4 out to just the top for me) but I do think three days off lying delicately bleating in the dressing gown of doom is taking the piss!

I had my bottom two wisdom teeth out under GA and had a few of days off work - my mouth was completely numb and swollen and I couldn't eat solid food for nearly a week. I didn't need to actually rest in bed though, other than on the day of surgery.
I had my top two wisdom teeth out under LA at the dentist. I went home, had a little cry (it was a horrible experience) then picked up the kids from after school club and carried on as normal.

Whatamesssss · 21/10/2020 21:16

Everyone's different. I had all 4 out under GA and it was horrendous, I was drooling blood for an hour and felt like I was drunk coming round. Felt very poorly and in severe pain. The next day the bruising and lumps came out and I looked like I had been badly beaten. I even had bruising on my chest (I assume for leverage). I had to have a week off work, could only open my jaw no more than 1cm for a few days. After 2 days I could get up and about fine, but wasn't fit to be seen in public Grin.

My sister had hers done a week after me and she had no problems. She came to see me straight after and I thought she hadn't had it done, she was fine.

I think you DH is probably milking it a bit.
