Where can I learn to disco dance

Geldhorn · 20/10/2020 21:41

I am so fed up with relentless shitness of life at the moment, I have been trying to think of something to do inside on these dark winter nights to cheer me and DH/ DCs up.

I have decided to learn disco dancing prompted by hearing "Native New Yorker" on radio the other day.

This must be something I can learn online for free - but where is best? Come on MNers - help me pls

Do you mean 70s disco dancing?

Geldhorn · 20/10/2020 21:44

Does anyone do disco dancing classes? What about just watching Saturday Night Fever on regular intervals?

I think I don't just need to learn the moves but maybe get the clothes and absorb the life style.

I live in a rural idyll - is there room here for some New York circa 1973 sparkle?

hey @Hostile17 - I most certainly do (should I say - menopausal ladies come hither?)

If you just search disco dance moves loads come up on YouTube

LaurieFairyCake · 20/10/2020 21:46

There MUST be video tutorials on you tube

TrembleLikeAFlower · 20/10/2020 21:46

What a fantastic winter project. There are lots of tutorials on YouTube, or perhaps just watch Saturday Night Fever on a loop?

Lightsabre · 20/10/2020 21:48

Love ' Native New Yorker'!

TrembleLikeAFlower · 20/10/2020 21:48

Ah, lots of cross posts.

My lockdown project has been watching Glee from start to finish, and if you want some disco joy I recommend Saturday Night Gleever.

Geldhorn · 20/10/2020 21:50

There are indeed many You Tube vids on the moves but what I really want is a kind of structured course. So that maybe me and DH and even our neighbours could do it each week and build up to an Xmas or New Year Disco extravaganza to entertain our family/ friends.

Is there anything like this or do I need to cobble it together myself?

What about looking for a Zumba class to 70's music? Does that exist?! Some of the moves are definitely 70's inspired and would give you a routine

Geldhorn · 20/10/2020 21:54

@Lightsabre - heard it on Radio 4 - Rupert Everett is doing some kind of narcissitic film about himself but does include that track.

I do remember being sadly disappointed to find out that Rupert was not straight in 1984 at the height of my crush on him.. But he has won me back over with his love of disco

I don't think Zumba is what I am looking for. I need men in unfeasably tight white trousers and women wearing boob tubes. Sequin ish

I thought you just waved your arms around and wiggled your hips in time to the music - unless it was to push pineapple, oops up or the Macarena.
My daughter makes me do Tik Tok dances in the kitchen for her amusement.

TrembleLikeAFlower · 20/10/2020 22:02

If you google disco + dance + school, there are numerous dance schools, including one offering online lessons. And try charity and vintage shops for an authentic boob tube.

Northernsoullover · 20/10/2020 22:11
you can try out some of these moves Grin
ageingdisgracefully · 20/10/2020 22:17

I love disco. I don't fancy an online class, so just set up loads of tunes on my speaker, get my weights, and pump away.Smile. Good exercise too.

We have a male Zumba instructor I bet he'd wear tight white trousers for a price Grin
Never disco dance in a boob tube, they slide down at the most inappropriate moments.
Geldhorn · 21/10/2020 00:17

@Northernsoullover - that's fab. So gripping I watched part 2. Love the way they introduce them by their jobs - cook/ typist/ trainee quantity surveyor

Disco certainly is a way to escape from the hum drum

OP get yourself to YouTube and search for Hustle tutorial. Have fun 😀

NC4Now · 21/10/2020 00:20

YouTube. I’ve taught myself to skank and moonwalk that way. Working on Northern Soul.
I’ve got too much time on my hands, clearly.

Teaseall · 21/10/2020 00:28

This has really made my crappy day soooooo much better, thank you.

You've just reminded me that I have a bronze medal for disco dancing (somewhere) that I achieved in 1979 I think .... I do vaguely remember that my mum bought me silver strappy dance sandals and American tan tights for my exam Grin

Geldhorn · 21/10/2020 00:32

@Teaseall = so pleased - quite honestly my day has been rubbish too but the sight of JT strutting his stuff to "You Could Be Dancing" has made me realise that there is a higher power Smile

OhioOhioOhio · 21/10/2020 00:34

I want to know how to do this too. Any kind of cheery dancing that gives me a bit of confidence.

Geldhorn · 21/10/2020 00:35

@Teaseall - you need to get out that medallion and wear it with pride.

We have converted Clap for Our Carers to Thursday morning street happy hour - I am thinking of initiating street New York Hustle ...
