Social collapse imminent?

AdultHumanFemale · 16/10/2020 17:53

DP and I have just been listening to R4 PM, and the unfolding conflict surrounding tiered regional restrictions. DP reckons we are potentially 6 weeks away from some degree of escalating social collapse in the UK, and should take precautions to insulate ourselves from the impact.
Prudent or unnecessary?
What measures might those of you who may be thinking along the same lines be taking?

@mygrandchildrenrock

PhilSwagielka having read the whole thread, that was exactly what I thought too!
It's telling that you automatically take the defensive over my point PhilSwagielka. That was not a trans dig. Just a good example of how polarised this country is and - as you have demonstrated - how unwilling its population is to seek find common ground. I mean, you could have just taken my point at face value and agreed with me that people are diverse. But no you chose to take issue. It's the exact reason why a revolution is out of the question.

I do worry about my childrens future. There does seem to be so much upset and unrest at the moment. People just seem to hate each other

riceuten · 17/10/2020 19:50

"should take precautions to insulate ourselves from the impact"

Like...?

Weaponry?
Stockpiling bog roll, pasta and hand gel ??

I'm more concerned about Brexit. I've started transferring my savings into Euro based accounts rather than sterling, which I can see being worth 50c in about 6 months time.

ididitsocanyou · 17/10/2020 19:52

user I second that. It's like people just take issue and argue by default. We have to try and reconcile but for that to happen we have to resist needing to be right all the time. We are only good when we work together but no one wants unity anymore. The right AND the left champion individualism - perhaps that's the strategy at the top ...to keep us squabbling among ourselves over issues that can never be resolved. We all ought to take a good look at ourselves.

riceuten · 17/10/2020 19:56

Has anyone got any information about the wealth tax/emergency tax measures where the government can take a slice off the top straight out of bank accounts

What other countries did (like Argentina and Brazil) was freezing all bank accounts and allowing people only access to around the equivalent of a months salary. This stopped hyperinflation rampant at the time, but also stole about 75% of people's saving, as their currency value dropped through the floor. Iceland had something similar, and people were withdrawing the equivalent of €250 every night from cash machines and exchanging it for hard currency.

riceuten · 17/10/2020 19:57

I have often found the people who are preaching "unity" after the Brexit vote are people who voted for Brexit and can't understand why we can't accept it and back it. Never, ever in my life time will I do this, nor will I be friends with anyone who does.

ididitsocanyou · 17/10/2020 20:07

Jeezus. There is no end to it. I've been called out for being anti trans, a preacher and a brexiteer. Why do I deserve this judgement?

Riceuten What would you do if you met someone who you liked but then you discovered they voted Brexit? Would you drop them at once - or when you meet someone for the first time do you immediately ask them which way they voted?

Nomoreporridge · 17/10/2020 20:53

@Echobelly

I don't think in the next six weeks, but I think those of us my age (40s) have seen the best years of the world we're going to live in now. Worst of all, our kids have Sad

Between covid, Brexit, political populism and environmental disaster the relatively stable world most of us grew up in in Europe and US is gone and there will be disorder, shifting governments and quite possibly war on the cards.

Totally agree with this. Feel really sad for our kids. Even if the world remains stable for a decade or so yet, the party is definitely over.

Just hope our kids pull their fingers out and clean up the mess of previous generations

Are mince pies in the supermarkets yet? The answer might influence my answer.
They certainly are 😋

winniestone37 · 17/10/2020 21:51

Bah ha ha ha. Pandemics have happened before you know.

Marshmallow07 · 17/10/2020 22:31

I will be creating a toilet roll fort to shelter in.

shehasglasses48 · 17/10/2020 22:45

And how would that affect you? because that appears to be all you’re bothered about, not the people who are being affected by this north south lockdown divide. Real people not statistics and rhetorical questions.

Zyzxyz · 18/10/2020 07:16

Stock up on toilet paper and dog food!

Bawdrip · 18/10/2020 09:54

How do you go about transferring your savings into a Euro based account? Asking for a friend

Zilla1 · 18/10/2020 10:01

It depends where you live and with whom you bank, Bawdrip, though if you're concerned, you could withdraw some savings and pop along to a bureau de change/Post Office and buy some Euros if you thought the transaction costs would be outweighed by the post-Brexit drop in exchange rate.

Ah yes, because it's all going so well in Australia at the moment! Hmm

Hello all,

Don't want to come over like a school teacher telling off OP or anyone else but I do think there is a certain population who are either being at best blatently irresponsible or worse purposefully sewing seeds of discontent in making inflammatory scaremongering posts about social collapse and how bad things are going to get/are.

This isn't about preventing free speech but honestly firstly think about to mental health of others before you post about your nuclear fallout shelter in the garden/the purge theory. Secondly, the old saying about self fulfilling prophecy when you go on about moving your money under the bed etc. Loose tongues cost lives etc.

Yes the 90s was lovely. But we as society have also made amazing progress even since then. Yes we have a pandemic to deal with but let's think about uniting and being as positive as we can for our kids even if not for us. Doom mongering I feel is some sort of weird voyeuristic pleasure for people who also enjoy apocolyptic films and books. I enjoy the odd zombie novel too but social responsibility doesn't end when you start posting online.

Our great grandparents would still tell us how good we have things when we can get Ocado deliver fresh avocado for brunch. Or we can stream Ghostbusters 2 without leaving the house or worrying about late rental fees.

Come on now Pelleas we shouldn't laugh at people who are posting here for the first time, even if they do adopt a monitoring style. Unless they're an old hand and have changed their name of course Grin
