What do you think is the worst birthday?

if you have these birthdays, how do you feel?

I think December 25th would be bad, January 1st very close second. At least when you're little that day is still your own and you can have a little party with all the hungover adults. I'd hate it as a teen/adult though!!

I actually wouldn't mind 29th Feb. You'd just celebrate the 28th or 1st March most years, it feels kind of special in a way. Then have a big bash every 4 years! Plus it's far enough away from Christmas. And you're clearly magic!

For what's it's worth I did avoid March/April for this reason.

I think anything between about 4-5 and 25 Jan. Very beginning of jan you are likely to still be off school or still taking annual leave. Then it's real austerity - back to the grind, cold weather with Christmas cheer all gone, everyone skint, on a diet, not drinking.

Towards the end of month people tend to get paid and are ready for a bit of a treat. My husband's is on 27th Jan and we usually get to celebrate with quite a few people who feel glad of an excuse to end their January sobriety a bit early.

My birthday is late January. I get January sales tat (Christmas candles, Christmas presents discounted etc).

I once got an upgrade on a flight as lady booking us in had the same birthday as me and we were both commiserating with eachother, I was flying out before Christmas.
@passthemustard my daughter is the 22nd - she was 12 days late so I blame her!

When she was in primary school she occasionally became annoyed that Christmas ‘took over’ her birthday - but she always had good parties- I sent invites about 6 weeks in advance so people could plan.

Also we now have a lovely tradition that our Christmas decorations do not go up until the 23rd. Usually in a mad rush as we are busy doing other stuff.

We love it .
Same my DS was due in February but decided 8 months was enough time inside and popped at new year.

We always send invites with xmas cards in december so people have them before schools break up then have the party the first weekend after school restarts.

We dont really have an issue with decor, DS would be happy to have it up but that might be because its after xmas so maybe it doesnt feel 'overshadowing'.

I dont expect gifts from parties guests (people should just show up and have fun) but over the years I have noticed a treand for his birthdays and wonder if its due to being a week after xmas but he virtually never gets physical gifts off anyone but us, everyone just gives him money in a card which is generous of them but not exactly fun for a young child to open.

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll

To the pp who asked whether people planned and thought about the date. Yes of course but we aren't all fortunate enough for plans to reach fruition, esp after a succession of miscarriages.

No, I realise that - I did try to cover that aspect and apologies if I inadvertently upset anybody. It was a genuine question: just wondering if people specifically avoid the possibility of a birth around Christmas (or any other time perceived as unfortunate) or just figure 'what will be, will be - it's not an exact science' and go for it regardless. Of course, anybody would be overjoyed to have a healthy baby born on Christmas Day rather than not have the baby at all (or one who sadly doesn't make it).

As someone who struggled through 15 years of infertility and secondary infertility I would be overjoyed at a child in general but it would be a lie if I said I didnt worry about clashing (not enough to stop trying but still a worry).

For me I most fret about a new due date landing on my childrens birthdays, I HATED shared birthdays as a kid as one child always ends up over looked so in an ideal world no date within 1 week either side of my kids birthdays.

I also would worry about xmas day, if I was due then I would probably be eating spicy food and walking miles in the fortnite run up hoping to pop before xmas day.

since we need IVF it gives us slight control but honestly not much, your cycle still starts when it starts and when we do it has to fit in with when we can do appointments etc... but I would probably try to avoid a January due date because I always pop early and want to avoid Xmas and DS birthday at New Year but the chances of landing exactly on those 2 days (or my other DS birthday) is under 1% anyway. anyway.

Crunchymum · 16/10/2020 16:19

My girls are both mid January (15th and 17th, a few years apart).

Not so bad now as they are little but will be depressing as fuck as teens and young adults.

Onprozacandmyhighhorse · 16/10/2020 18:09

My daughter was born on Hogmanay and until she was about 10 thought that everyone was making a fuss because it was her birthday and not because it was New Years Eve! We always make a real fuss of her and make sure her cards and presents are bought way before Christmas. She loves having her birthday at such a special time.

Nishky · 17/10/2020 08:53

@mam0918 re the money gifts? How old is he- that certainly became more common towards the end of primary school for my ds

icebearforpresident · 17/10/2020 09:16

My kids birthdays are the week before Xmas and early January, I feel guilty about it. I’m already fighting relatives trying to pull the ‘here’s one big present for both’ crap for this year. We did a big class party one year for the January birthday, I had to send out the invitations mid-December because I knew people would be making plans over the festive period and the party was the weekend before the schools went back. Ended up almost no one rsvp’d and only about 7 kids turned up. I swear everyone just forgot.

Loads of my cousins have December or January birthdays and they all hate it for all the reasons mentioned. I actually said to my mum once I didn’t want to have kids around Xmas and she has never let me forget it.

we have had a verity or attendences but I would say 6-9 is most common but the biggest had 22 kids show up

where did you have it? the biggest attendence we had was next to the school... I realised over the years the further geographically from the school which is in the center of our town then the less kids attend (maybe its harder for people to attend if they dont know the area or cant drive etc...)

jay55 · 17/10/2020 11:24

Mine is between Xmas and new year and it's shit. Can't celebrate before Xmas as everyone is busy with work dos/concerts/events.
Can't celebrate in January as everyone is broke or on a health kick.

DuesToTheDirt · 17/10/2020 11:34

DD is 1st Jan and has always liked it - everyone gets the day off for it Grin. No one around us is a big drinker (she is grown up now but she and friends are also not drinkers), so hangovers not an issue. Parties were a pain though and usually later, as if you made arrangements before Christmas people didn't really want to think about what they were doing in January.

Fishfingersandwichplease · 17/10/2020 12:10

I would say any time from Dec 1st to Jan 31st!

BabyLlamaZen · 17/10/2020 13:14

I feel like it's attitude as well. As a child, going to a Jan birthday was fun as another party just after school went back and something positive for the new year, same again as a teenager. At uni again it didn't matter about payday. It's a nice way to see everyone again after the Xmas lull and being with family.

I've always bought presents way before and tbh even if I left it to last minute everything would be half the price so a better present if anything!

My one friend's birthday in Jan is like the highlight of a miserable month. 🤣
Then later on you can just go abroad for winter sun.

I wouldn't like it for my own child though as you would have to make a lot of effort in making it special after Christmas, which I normally find exhausting!

January 5th for me don't feel like celebrating just feel fat and shattered

Doodlepip23 · 17/10/2020 13:19

Mine is late January, a few days before payday when everyone is skint and feeling deflated. Used to hate it when I was younger and wanting to go out with friends, now I’m older it doesn’t really matter. I make it a rule not to work on my birthday though - did that twice and both times were awful for various reasons.

IMNOTSHOUTING · 17/10/2020 13:27

My cousins are four siblings all with birthdays within a day of Christmas. They had a big celebration in the summer to make up for it!

amusedbush · 17/10/2020 13:35

My dad’s birthday is the 29th February, which I think is cool. His 10th ‘real’ birthday fell on the year I turned 10 and I loved that Grin

My ex’s birthday was 22nd January so nobody had been paid yet, it was dark and cold, everyone was fed up and on the come-down from the festive period.

Mine is in mid May and I’m grateful for that. The weather is usually good and it splits up the year.

Hoctober · 17/10/2020 13:46

Mine is 27th December AKA The Day After Boxing Day Grin

I love it

BlackLipstick · 17/10/2020 14:01

Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve, New Year's Day. Mainly because it would never be 'your' day.

I also think Valentine's Day would be pretty rubbish, as it would be busy and heart themed in many places, restaurants etc.

Also any date from mid To end of August as you would be very young compared to others in your class when at school.

JassyRadlett · 17/10/2020 14:06

I have an early January birthday. As a kid in Australia it wasn’t great - straight after Christmas and in the middle of the summer holidays so everyone was away. As an adult it was actually pretty great - good weather, people just coming back to work after Christmas and happy to go for a drink or barbecue, and no nonsense about Dry January.

In this country it’s grim. Everyone is broke, everyone has given up alcohol/sugar/whatever and apparently also fun because you couldn’t go out to celebrate a friend’s birthday without those things. It’s dark. It’s cold. And everyone is fucking MISERABLE.

Makes me almost nostalgic for the ‘joint presents’ (aka ‘we couldn’t be arsed to think of two things so we spent an extra dollar or two on this’) of my youth.

nighttrains · 17/10/2020 14:08

Late January when all the credit card bills arrive and it's not payday plus the weather is shit. I'm glad I don't celebrate birthdays Grin

nighttrains · 17/10/2020 14:51

Yes to being better when it's a summer birthday, I much prefer it too.
