We've polished off our hotel breakfasts, flocked to the beaches and eaten out to help out with Rishi. Now the D-Day style floatilla of Anti-Dementor boats weather the stormy seas of tiers 1, 2 and 3 and support each other through the calls for lockdown.

Hold on tight and get those bouyancy aids on...

They've concluded their willy waving fight over Manchester as well - they're getting hit with the tier 3 willy.

But if Manchester says 'NO' who is going to enforce it.

And they start on Leeds, etc etc and they all just say 'NO' what can BoJo and his chimps do. I don't think the army would be up for that - and if they were it would be civil war. A lot of people are worn down but there are some good and decent politicians out there (and others that aren't particularly good but would relish a fight back against the opposition unlike Starmer - if they can attack the government from all sides (too far to say work together) the government is mincemeat.

WouldBeGood · 20/10/2020 15:17

I actually think the governments would be glad if the people revolt: then they can wash their hands if responsibility and face is saved.

110APiccadilly · 20/10/2020 15:17

I think things will get better. I don't think people will put up with it for ever.

I think there will be changes - we'll be poorer as a country and perhaps a bit less free (I hope not, but I'm trying to be rational). But we'll be able to meet people, to sing together, to hug people. Because these are basic human impulses, which always, always break through in the end.

Thanksitsgotpockets · 20/10/2020 15:26

There must be MPs sitting there biding their time.
There must be conversation going on between local counselors, mayors, business owners, charities etc.

Just as it took a long time for people to dare to express their dissent on Mumsnet, it will take time for those who suspect we're taking the wrong approach to find their tribe enough to feel able to say something more publicly.

Thanksitsgotpockets · 20/10/2020 15:28

Whatever is expressed has to be done carefully to avoid being smeared as a conspiracy theorist or covid denier or as someone who wants to murder grannies.

The public tide has to slowly change enough and the data has to back it up sufficiently that facts cannot be denied and more open debate will be welcomed.

BogRollBOGOF · 20/10/2020 15:41

Dissent is growning slowly. Typical MN polls now look like a referendum result!
We're not plastered 9:1 against like we were 6 months ago when people were fretting about VE Day congas.

@justasking111

smoke an mirrors re brexit, while covid storms forward. It is all a crock. Those poor bastards in Ireland with a six week lock down for a handful of deaths.
I can't believe we are back here again. Ugh it is going to be a long six weeks.

The city I live in has flooded this morning. High tide and torrential rain. Lots of retailers who will have to close after tomo have had their shops flooded. God love them. Like things weren't shit enough.

HeIenaDove · 20/10/2020 15:47

@Wheytaminute The advertisers that advertise in the mags so give them their revenue will try to push it like a normal Christmas. Because they want ppl to spend like it is. Well i dont trust the Gov. not to do what they did with Eid. If i get even a whiff of it or another lockdown im shutting my purse.

BogRollBOGOF · 20/10/2020 15:58

Even if the powers that be do a last minute easing, the turkeys are on diets now. You can't suddenly whip out mainstream arrangements for Christmas out of thin air. Screwing over Eid at the last minute or economically smaller festivals like Easter is one thing, but I'm pretty sure that the egos will want to "save" Christmas not join Cromwell in history.

You can tell the bigwigs don't get the mental load of Christmas...

The timing of the Irish lockdown indicates some desire for a more normalised function in society in December.

I won't hold my breath for January.

From the sounds of it we will be going from level 5 to level 3 at the end of the 6 weeks. So pubs and restaurants can only serve takeaway or have 15 people sitting outdoors. There'll be no 12 pubs here by the sounds of it.
bakingcupcakes · 20/10/2020 16:11

I honestly don't think Boris will want to be known as the PM who cancelled Christmas. I don't think anyone would take any notice if he did. I'm planning to carry on more or less as normal but with a shorter amount of time at my parents house and possibly only entering the conservatory.

I'm finding the idea of never having a hug from a grown up again quite depressing.

Sad to see Manchester has fallen. Wonder what would happen if they just said no and carried on...

Flowers Cake to all those struggling today.

Reedwarbler · 20/10/2020 16:18

Well, there was 'eat out to help out' in the summer. But, I don't think there will be a similar push re Christmas shopping. Retail is already bleak, the annual saviour of a Christmas shopping bonanza is not going to come to much on the high street, so things are just going to get worse, if that's possible. I know it's only October, but there seems to be far less of those early commercial signs of Christmas this year (I don't just mean telly ads, I mean xmas catalogues, early decorations and the like). I hope we don't get heavy snow in December. Do you remember a few years ago when the snow held up all the delivery vans and presents didn't arrive until after the event?
I am already looking forward to my wine tonight - and bake off. We have to find our pleasures where we can.

ISaySteadyOn · 20/10/2020 16:20

On a different note, I am really enjoying The Haunting of Bly Manor on Netflix. I am only 1 and a half episodes in but I love it so far.

DominaShantotto · 20/10/2020 16:31

Dear God I have a lump in my throat listening to all the Manchester leaders (it's like that bit at the end of the film where all the underdogs unite and stand together before bashing the Big Bad into mush) talk about how there IS more in the world than Covid and how people's lives matter.

AcornAutumn · 20/10/2020 16:33

Recycled thank you for the link, that’s great.

iSay I haven’t got Netflix at the mo but will for that. I loved The Haunting of Hill House, though the early episodes were better than the finale. But it was so well done.

AcornAutumn · 20/10/2020 16:33

Xpost Domina - are they? That’s good to hear!

Me too. It's as if finally someone on tv who is in the limelight is saying what I have been thinking since March.
DominaShantotto · 20/10/2020 16:49

Dear god now they've REALLY fucked the Mancs to teach them a lesson looks like!

When someone shows you who they are - listen.

BogRollBOGOF · 20/10/2020 17:14

A couple of weeks ago, I was in the garden centre with DM and they were begining to clear for and set out Christmas stock. Garden centres tend to sneak it in from August bank holiday.

Aldi have the mince pies and stollen and that lot out, that seems slightly early before Halloween.

Normally I chunter away about Christmas stuff being premature, but I really don't care this year. I don't know if it's reduced exposure or generalised numbness.

AcornAutumn · 20/10/2020 17:17

OP I’m the same with christmas

I bought salted caramel mince pies in Aldi because if it reaches the stage of queuing outside I won’t be going to the supermarket.

I think people are keen to get the food in before our leaders make sone other decision, like we can only buy turkey bone broth and Brussel sprouts.

BogRollBOGOF · 20/10/2020 17:24

DS is happy to have all the sprouts, even on pizza. More Christmas Pudding for me, although we're sorted for that as last year's is still maturing Grin

I've told DH I'm breaking the habit of a lifetime and putting the Christmas tree up in November. I want to look at pretty sparkly lights as everything seems so dull. I've already ordered some bits for Christmas in our next Ocado delivery before the Christmas panic buying starts.

TheOrchidKiller · 20/10/2020 17:52

Evening, weary troopers.

There's a low level depression at work, everyone is just waiting for our next battering. Almost phoned in sick today but got dressed & went in. Felt much better when I uncovered some ADs & we had a rant in the staff room. One of the most chilled people had been upset by the building's chief dementor, who had complained that we are all using too much soap.

You can't make this stuff up.

Reedwarbler · 20/10/2020 18:27

I've mentioned it before, but I am really noticing how many pics the bbc news has on its main page of people wearing masks while outside. At this moment there are two. I don't know why it should annoy me so much, but I feel they are quietly pushing some sort of agenda.

AcornAutumn · 20/10/2020 18:29

Reed, they are pushing an agenda.
