ADs self isolate in a fridge Boris style

We've polished off our hotel breakfasts, flocked to the beaches and eaten out to help out with Rishi. Now the D-Day style floatilla of Anti-Dementor boats weather the stormy seas of tiers 1, 2 and 3 and support each other through the calls for lockdown.

Hold on tight and get those bouyancy aids on...

The Government can just put areas into tiers without any negotiation, but they think the messaging is clearer and people are more likely to comply if there is local agreement too, and locally areas can decide more restrictions, e.g. gyms closed in Liverpool.

Orangeblossom7777 · 16/10/2020 15:47

It seems some areas are asking to get moved into a higher one, such as Essex. All seems a bit vague.

Bollss · 16/10/2020 15:50

i think its to do with cash isn't it - tier 2 you get nowt, tier 3 you get some kind of financial package to keep for youself to dish out to local business.

Made me laugh i heard Boris on the radio about mayor of mancs saying i hope we can reach an agreement but i can force you into tier 3 anyway (well not in so many words but that was the definite vibe!)

Boris, mate, that's not how you get people to comply.

I genuinely think the good will of the vast majority of the british public has ran off and jumped out the window, nobody gives a shit anymore.

Reedwarbler · 16/10/2020 15:59

It seems to me if you create tiers, then gradually move the majority of the country into the top tier you are creating a nationwide lockdown by stealth.

Orangeblossom7777 · 16/10/2020 16:05

Latest is they might just leave Manchester where they are (2)

Bollss · 16/10/2020 16:28

just seen a headline that was "boris tells andy burnham to obey him, or people will die"

That to me sounds like boris is threatening to sacrifice several mancs until burnham complies Grin

i doubt thats how he meant it to sound. twit.

I quite like the message from our public health guy here, about doing what you think best and looking at benefits, seems sensible. (we have quite high cases here now)

Mentions cases rising..and mainly in the young / universities..and being well managed (apparently)

"Now, having said all that, and emphasising that we are in a relatively good position to keep safe here, total societal risk is increasing and everyone needs to think about their role in preventing transmission, wherever and whoever they are.

So, I ask you to ask yourself, whenever you are mixing with others or going out:

Is this necessary?
Is this safe?
Is the benefit worth the risk to me and to others?

Answer those questions honestly and thoughtfully, based on a general understanding of the current situation, and you will find you can still be doing those things that are really important to your wellbeing, but will not taking unnecessary risks for little benefit.

If you avoid seeing more people than you need to, avoid crowded places that you don’t have to visit, and continue to apply good rules of social distancing and protection wherever you go, we will keep case numbers as low as possible and get through this as well as we can"

Orangeblossom7777 · 16/10/2020 16:41

So yes, for me, swimming is necessary for health, and more benefit than risk. Same with school...it makes sense I guess. and yes going out for a meal can be too.

AcornAutumn · 16/10/2020 16:57

Reed “ It seems to me if you create tiers, then gradually move the majority of the country into the top tier you are creating a nationwide lockdown by stealth.”

That was his plan all along. I did a long hollow laugh when I heard him call National lockdown the “nuclear” option. He’ll do it one way or the other.

Is he taking nominations for the "people will die" bit? I have a list!

amicissimma · 16/10/2020 17:05

@Orangeblossom7777,

How come you've found the only (one of the few?) leaders with any sense in the country? Do you mind saying which area? I might just move ...

Ibake · 16/10/2020 17:09

@DominaShantotto Wanksock is a northerner so I nominate him as sacrifice number 1

And in other, better, news. My phone automatically fills in Wanksock as I'm typing Grin

NothingIsWrong · 16/10/2020 17:16

@DominaShantotto I also have a list...

That's the kind of mindset I have.

Much of the time, I'm mooching quietly at home with a WFH DH.
Anything outdoors is pretty much low risk enough and beneficial enough to be justifiable. Even if it involves a couple of superflous kids. Stupidly it's legally higher ground to leave the spare 7 yos at home on their own which is not explicitly illegal!
My DCs' two indoor sports clubs are of great physical, mental and developmental benefit.
Meeting someone for a run earlier, very low risk and very healthy, likewise Sunday's race.

My social needs are pretty modest. I can get a long way on varied small talk. I accept that my 40th birthday celebrations early next year are unlikely to get more exciting than a takeaway at home.

I'm willing to go at the pace of relatives, I'm not going to put rules above DM's welfare in the winter when she is guaranteed to come to harm by prolonged exposure to calm, probably just her arthritis being aggravated, but possibly increased suceptibility to anything respiratory.
My crappy visor and I go to the supermarket late in the evening when it's quiet.

I have little enthusiasm for some rules and disdain for others, but I happily accept reducing social interactions (not minimising) and doing as much as I can in as low risk environments as is sensible.

The ‘obey me or Manchester gets it’ message is quite frightening.

It’s like he’s weaponising the virus against the people.

We're in Bath, Bristol also is in the tier 1...I'll find a link to the message. He's said some other stuff recently which seems sensible too, when local press were dementing.

Orangeblossom7777 · 16/10/2020 17:42

Bath has had the lowest figures / deaths in uk he said previously. Kind of surprising as many retire here so not young. Quite wealthy area though

JamSarnie · 16/10/2020 17:46

The message of think, minimise contacts, work at home where you can and be sensible would have been a better message at the start. Just by working at home my list of daily contacts has gone down from hundreds to one.

I doubt the economy would have tanked as much and I suspect those that partied hard wouldn't have done so as it's human nature to push back when things have been taken from you.

But it wouldn't have been enough for those that want the strict lockdowns so here we are.

Taswama · 16/10/2020 17:55

have you seen the guardian article on uk tourism - 'crazy, isn't it?, Devon resorts reports no shortage of visitors'. The tourist board for mid Wales region with really low rates is saying its a reflection of the sort of community they are, how people have pulled together to keep everyone safe etc etc.
Or maybe you don't have urban populations in dense housing and lots of factories and sweatshops and universities in your region? Amazing!

LivinLaVidaLoki · 16/10/2020 17:55

Can I have a gripe about something non covid related?

Taswama · 16/10/2020 17:55

And thanks for the clarifications pn Liverpool v Nottingham.

Ibake · 16/10/2020 17:56

Please do Loki, that's what we're here for!
