We've polished off our hotel breakfasts, flocked to the beaches and eaten out to help out with Rishi. Now the D-Day style floatilla of Anti-Dementor boats weather the stormy seas of tiers 1, 2 and 3 and support each other through the calls for lockdown.

Hold on tight and get those bouyancy aids on...

They are selling various poppy bits at school, DS and I are both big readers so he decided to surprise me and buy us matching bookmarks.
Very sweet idea.
However....he took the money out of his money box and he only has notes in there so he paid with a note. For 2 50p bookmarks. While he has had a telling off for taking 10 pounds without asking, I actually feel a bit bad for him as his heart was in the right place.
But also I cannot believe no one questioned him paying 10 pounds.
So do I call the school office, ask for change from a charitable donation and look like a dick or chalk it up as a learning experience for him. Hes 9 btw.

Ibake · 16/10/2020 18:16

Aw, bless him, they can be a bit clueless about money at that age. Personally I would contact school and then maybe talk to him about choosing to make donations to charity and how much he thinks he can afford out of his money box? For me it should be a conscious choice (that he might still do) rather than an accidental donation.

TheOrchidKiller · 16/10/2020 18:21

Yes, @LivinLaVidaLoki Gripe away. It will make a refreshing change.

Sorry, internet cut out so I missed Loki's bit about the money. Yes, I think you should speak to the school. I say this as someone who recently only had a tenner on them & was not prepared to put all of it into a whip-round for someone at work, when the going rate is a couple of quid. (Managed to rustle up some change eventually)

JamSarnie · 16/10/2020 18:29

Livin bless him. Like you said he was trying to do something nice. Maybe a quiet word with the school on Monday.

BogRollBOGOF · 16/10/2020 18:32

@Taswama

have you seen the guardian article on uk tourism - 'crazy, isn't it?, Devon resorts reports no shortage of visitors'. The tourist board for mid Wales region with really low rates is saying its a reflection of the sort of community they are, how people have pulled together to keep everyone safe etc etc. Or maybe you don't have urban populations in dense housing and lots of factories and sweatshops and universities in your region? Amazing!
I think a lot of the south's "luck" in the tourist season was better weather making it easier to sicialise or go to outdoor attractions.

Mid-Wales tends to attract hardy, outdoor types too.

We had a lovely flock to Barmouth for the day. 6+ hours of driving, but utterly worth it. More worth it than 4-5 hours to Skegness would have been Grin

Wow! That's an amazing coincidence, especially as * @IAintentDead* only changed her name back yesterday!

RobinHobb · 16/10/2020 18:33

Rant alert

Oh do fuck off boris and the rest of you fear mongering morons. You will be absolutely FINE if you get "the virus". Ffs are we so terrified of being sick for a few days? And before anyone starts spouting long covid nonsense to me it happens in vanishingly small amount of cases. FYI: bacterial pneumonia can take up to 6 months to recover from (source: nhs website). Shall we fucking self destruct then?
FOR FUCKS SAKE!!!!!

RobinHobb · 16/10/2020 18:37

@BogRollBOGOF
Me too. DH wfh, I study from home, school run there and back. This hasn't varied for months now. Ocado delivery online shopping. Hoping to see much loved parents in law next week. That's all. It's not much. I can do this but feeling heart broken about potentially having to withdraw from my degree. It made the days pass quickly, and I found it very interesting.

TheOrchidKiller · 16/10/2020 18:43

@BogRollBOGOF can't stand Skeg.

Very angry email today from someone very upset that their pens are being borrowed & we are not allowed to share pens. (Fair enough). If anyone needs to borrow a pen in future they will be given the communal pen to use.

Not entirely sure of the logic there. Unless the pen-lender is out to exact revenge with the germy shared biro....

Unfortunately the 'correct' spelling had already gone.

I had flu 25 years ago when I was 30, I was 8.5 stone and probably at my fittest. I was in bed for 2 weeks and it took me 3 months to totally recover. DH didn’t catch it off me despite sharing a bed throughout. Fast forward to May when we both tested positive for covid, late 50s and fat. I’m almost certain I know where I caught it from. We both had mild cold symptoms and didn’t spend any time in bed, DH says he’s had worse hangovers. I know it can be serious for some people but it’s not an automatic death sentence even for us oldies. I’ve also know people in their 90s to completely recover.

Ibake · 16/10/2020 18:58

I've just been arguing with an absolute cunt on twitter who thinks anyone struggling right now has only got themselves to blame because they didn't save for a rainy day. I tried to point out that someone supporting a family on £8.72/hour probably doesn't have that luxury after rent, bills and food. His typical DM retort re fags, iPhones and the bookies has made me blood boil so much I've had to block him and then come on here to tell you all about it. What a vile, sanctimonious, ivory tower dwelling cunt. Make me feel better, please.

TheOrchidKiller · 16/10/2020 19:09

I know , @Ibake. They have no idea. They don't listen to you because they don't want to.

@IAintentDead that explains your username!

MaudesMum · 16/10/2020 19:19

Slightly off tangent (but not really - sort of linking with @Orangeblossom7777's sensible public health director) - did anyone watch a drama a few months ago on the Salisbury poisonings? The public health person there was brilliant and played a major role in tracking down sources of infection and keeping people safe. I can't help thinking that if the government had devolved more responsibility to people like the real her, and all others like her, who know their locality, we might be getting on a lot better.

Wishfulthinking1977 · 16/10/2020 19:30

I have to say as someone in sw that works in the tourist industry we have been slammed since July and still really busy! Which is great but possibly going to get a downturn soon as tiers not being allowed to travel. But what I have found this year is our guests which have been from all across the country lots from the north have been on the whole lovely! So appreciative and friendly, happy with what we are doing and understanding of the extra precautions we have had to put in. We get the odd crumb moaner but mostly really nice people that I would welcome back at anytime.

TabbyStar · 16/10/2020 19:38

I've just been arguing with an absolute cunt on twitter who thinks anyone struggling right now has only got themselves to blame because they didn't save for a rainy day.

I saved for a rainy day, that came last year, 2 months off to care for DPs, one of whom died. I've had nothing from the Govt since March and living on 25% of my normal (not v high) income has not been easy, there are only so many rainy days you can save for when you're a lone parent with a useless ex.

MagdaS · 16/10/2020 19:40

I am doing the sensible approach in limiting contacts. I absolutely have to go into the office for my mental health. I cannot WFH more than one or two days a week. That has become abundantly clear.

However, that is pretty much all I am doing. No pubs, restaurants, little general socialising (helped by not having a big social circle to start with). I have seen family a couple of times. I will go literally nowhere with T&T as the idea of being quarantined for two weeks terrifies me. I have a massive thing on at work over the next four weeks where I will quite literally be on the stand and cross examined by a QC and I cannot do that alone, in our box room.

Don't give in - I'm keeping going cos I bloody love the subject and the whole act of learning stuff (it's like an epic stretch of a cricked neck of my brain after years of death by Cbeebies - and it feels good). Fuck the exam changes - ours have all been replaced by assignments.

Things that are pissing me off is when placed in tiny breakout groups with a group of students who house share sharing a laptop - and they're raising eyebrows and exchanging looks among themselves - it makes a really awful atmosphere on there (and it's a group headed by the cow who was awful to me on placement last year) and I'm going to raise it with the staff in the next few weeks as it's getting bloody ridiculous. Today we were put in breakout groups in pairs to practice (yes this is fucking ridiculous over the internet) cranial nerve exams - lots of asking your partner to pull ridiculous faces and stick their tongue out - and I felt really awkward for the poor fucker who got stuck with four of them sharing a laptop and chatting among themselves about who did the washing up - versus that person on their own (they're not pleasant to the mature students).

Vintagelovingmum · 16/10/2020 20:55

Wanted to share this beauty with you all.
@Orangeblossom7777 we are near to Wells in somerset so not far from you, although I haven't heard from the public health head locally to us.

I find I spend my days as i imagine a manic depressive does, some days are just awful and all i can do is just spend the day watching tv and others I just get my act together so much we fit about 20 things in, there's just no in between anymore. It's when I don't have things to look forward to things seem at their worst but I've got to plan and i really hate disappointment

Aaaargh I’m so fed up of all the miserable doomsday reporting, mainly in the Guardian. All the talk about the highest numbers of cases ever recorded in various countries. Ok fine, but can you not qualify statements like that by pointing out that an absolute fuckload of people are getting tested now so obviously records are being set because widespread testing was not happening back in March/April? I heard a scientist saying on the radio that if there had been widespread testing back then the numbers would have dwarfed what we’re seeing now. It’s just lazy, irresponsible journalism.
