Has anyone had a dental check up since covid 19?

I've had an appointment postponed, then the postponed appointment cancelled. The practice says they have no plans at all to start routine check ups again and will only try to see emergencies. Just wondering if this is the same for everyone and everywhere.

DD had a checkup at a private dental clinic in central London in September - they are still booking according to their website....

LittleMissLockdown · 14/10/2020 09:54

Nope. I've tried repeatedly to book in as due to pregnancy my gums are pretty much ruined and they are not doing anything other than emergency work or treating private patients.

My maternity exemption runs out soon and it's now looking almost inevitable that I'm not going to be seen before it expires. Sad

I have with my private dentist. My kids are with an nhs practice abs have their check ups booked for next week. I had to ring the nhs practice to get them booked in though they didn't contact me.

My son (child, NHS) and I (private) had our routine check ups in September.

LeoTimmyandVi · 14/10/2020 09:55

Yes, same here. Routine check up appointments due in Sept cancelled My son has had a sore tooth this week that I thought may need a filling. I could only get a telephone appointment two days later where the dentist will decide if he is in enough pain to get an in person appointment.

I think it will be a long while before routine dental treatment returns.

nitgel · 14/10/2020 09:55

No. July appointment was cancelled and no follow up.

Tappering · 14/10/2020 09:55

Nope. DH and I are at different branches of the same practice. He's had a routine checkup. Mine - 3 miles away - is still saying that they are only seeing emergency cases.

RidingMyBike · 14/10/2020 09:58

No. Had appt cancelled in April which they rebooked for July. That appt (for me and DD) went ahead as planned. And we're booked again for January. No hygienist as the water jet cleaning thing isn't allowed but check up was as normal and also had x ray.

JustCallMeGriffin · 14/10/2020 09:58

We're NHS patients. No routine check ups for us but dentist is seeing us as needed for stuff that needs attention. I think in Wales though NHS funding is being withheld for routine check ups at the moment (I think, I'm losing track of everything now to be honest) so can't blame the dentists for not working for free.

RidingMyBike · 14/10/2020 09:58

We're both NHS patients

TheDogsMother · 14/10/2020 10:00

Had a check up in August. Private dentist

PawPawNoodle · 14/10/2020 10:02

I had a check up appointment on Monday (NHS), I'm booked in for a filling in about a month.

WhatHaveIFound · 14/10/2020 10:04

Private dentist appointment went ahead for my DS but the NHS orthodontist check up was just a phone call. That's it. Apparently they'll see him in a year's time Hmm

ExclamationPerfume · 14/10/2020 10:06

My DH has a few weeks ago. I go elsewhere with the children and they aren't seeing anyone until next year.

tectonicplates · 14/10/2020 10:06

I had a filling done recently by a private dentist. I did have to phone around a few places though, to find out who was open.

haba · 14/10/2020 10:06

DH is private patient- all work was cancelled on lockdown, and emergency work only began in September. He was due to have a large filling and a root canal investigation the last weekend of March. That didn't go ahead, and he's had several abscesses/infections since. He has finally seen the dentist this week, and it looks like he's going to lose a molar completely. The abscesses have been so bad they've killed the nerve Sad
It's going to cost a fortune for the root canal which may turn into extraction/bridge if the tooth is too badly damaged.

Neither the DC, nor I have been called for checkups. I'm private, they're NHS, but same practice.

gamerchick · 14/10/2020 10:06

Same as you OP. Emergencies only.

Every now and then I get a lecture via email about prevention is better than cure though.

ExclamationPerfume · 14/10/2020 10:07

The orthodontist my DD sees is working as usual.

earthtopluto · 14/10/2020 10:07

Yep, routine checkup with NHS dentist. Whole family have been. Son has an appointment next week and I'm having my bridge replaced next month

haba · 14/10/2020 10:08

Sorry, for clarification, DH uses a different practice to us, due to work location.

Babdoc · 14/10/2020 10:08

Had mine, and a scale and polish, in Aug. Next one booked for Nov.
My dentist is 60% private, 40% NHS patients.
He has installed state of the art ventilation with a high rate of air changes per hour for the surgery, and full PPE, even a wipe clean tablet to replace the credit card machine. Patients are only allowed in the waiting room one at a time.
During the lockdown, he worked at the emergency dental hub at our local university dental school. They managed to treat nearly a thousand emergency cases.
I think it will vary from practice to practice, OP, depending on how safe they are able to make their premises.

starrynight19 · 14/10/2020 10:08

No none of us (dp , dc) have had a routine check up this year.
With nhs dentists. When we rang they said they are doing telephone consultations only. In the north.

AuntieMarys · 14/10/2020 10:09

Yes...dentist and 2 hygienist appointments. Next one booked in for January.

Ghostlyglow · 14/10/2020 10:14

Thanks for the responses. Interesting and pretty worrying Sad

We had a call asking us to come in for an NHS check up a few days before Christmas recently and I booked me and my sons in as the one away at university will be back by then. I know it's over 2 months in advance but I was glad they had resumed service. Our dentist did see my older son in I think July who had wisdom tooth pain on NHS (although they were not then doing root canal work - anyway at least they saw him and did something with his filling)

My daughter incidentally called me from a dental outside queue this morning in London where she is having a check up ( but that is private, not NHS).
