Has anyone had a dental check up since covid 19?

I've had an appointment postponed, then the postponed appointment cancelled. The practice says they have no plans at all to start routine check ups again and will only try to see emergencies. Just wondering if this is the same for everyone and everywhere.

NHS here - both DH and I have had check ups in Sept and both have had treatment. They are being VERY careful though - I have a filling appt and it is for an hour (to deep clean the surgery after - I hope!) so they will be severely limited on how many they can see in a day. And they take everyone's temperature as they arrive - and no bags allowed in etc.

Wowcherarestalkingme · 14/10/2020 10:16

We had our check ups cancelled but I had an appointment last week to fix a broken tooth. The receptionist said to call in March to book mine and the kids next check ups. I was quite surprised she even mentioned it as I assumed they would be cancelled for the foreseeable

Polkadotties · 14/10/2020 10:19

Yes, I have seen my private dentist and hygienist.
My OH goes to the same practice but sees the NHS dentist, he has been told no check ups until at least early next year.

Yes, we were lucky enough to register with the dental school and I haven't paid a penny in 10 years. They have been back up and running for a few months. Everything is as safe as they can make a dentist.

Badgerbadger88 · 14/10/2020 10:20

I had one yesterday :) all back to normal!

It seems so unjust that you're only worth seeing if you're paying privately. So much for the NHS being free at the point of use, obviously these days only money matters. It seems especially cruel given how many people have lost their jobs due to covid.
Bickles · 14/10/2020 10:22

Yes, DS and I both saw my friend in August.
I am a dentist and we are doing check ups. We have seen loads of NHS kids as well as private adults. We don’t do NHS adults. We have seen new patients as well.

Bickles · 14/10/2020 10:23

When I say we don’t do NHS adults, we don’t have a contract for them and haven’t for years, nothing to do with Covid.

H1978 · 14/10/2020 10:24

Only emergency appointments at ours, dh went yesterday as he grinds his teeth and he feels like they have moved since last check up last December. DC’s had their routine checkup cancelled and I haven’t had a message from mine to book a checkup as I normally do every 6 months.

ohidoliketobe · 14/10/2020 10:26

Same as you OP, dentist is o ly seeing emergency and private appointments for the foreseeable Hmm

Badgerbadger88 · 14/10/2020 10:27

@LittleMissLockdown it’s the same all over the NHS.

In my local hospital - There was an appointment free on the MRI scanner for a private patient within days. For an NHS patient they had to wait 12 weeks to use the same scanner and the same staff.

So yeah it does feel unjust that richer patients are cared for in a more timely manner and those who can’t afford it have to wait.

It’s most definitely a two tier class system / healthcare problem. (May not be the same everywhere in the UK I suppose!)

No. I had appointments with the dentist and the hygienist cancelled in February for different, non-Covid reasons.
No appointments since and none in prospect.
I am on Denplan and have continued paying monthly throughout.
I would see it as a consequence of the pandemic, if it wasn't that three friends who pay privately, item by item, have had routine check ups with both dentist and hygienist in the past couple of months - called by them to come in. It does make me feel that because I am paying anyway, they see no need to check me.

Scarby9 · 14/10/2020 10:30

To clarify - the friends are at the same dental practice, two with the same dentist.

DollyTots · 14/10/2020 10:36

No checkups. No treatment for lost filling but they have been seeing me for Invisalign appointments to take impressions and get aligners fitted. So I think naturally it’s money driven

yawnsvillex · 14/10/2020 10:37

Twice - private dentist

Ring up and cancel. Tell them there's no point in paying for the plan if you can't access the service. Then save the money instead for any emergency treatment.

I asked about the same thing in children's health but no traffic it seems. DS was due for an appointment in April, I'm now due now (both last seen in October). The clinic is saying to call in the new year.

I don't think anything is wrong but DS still has several baby teeth and doesn't have his 12 year old molars yet (he's 14), so I like the reassurance that everything is okay.

Telephoneaddict · 14/10/2020 10:44

Orthodontist, hygienist and dentist all working as normal here. They ask that only the person going for treatment go inside, but they did relent and allow me in with DS. Masks right up until treatment and a mouthwash to kill off the virus.

2tired2bewitty · 14/10/2020 10:46

My children had a (NHS) appointment for August rescheduled to November and that has this week been postponed indefinitely. Very grateful that I saw the dentist just a few days before lockdown so I’m not due to go again until next spring.

murmurgam · 14/10/2020 10:50

I managed to crack two teeth during lockdown but haven't managed to find a dentist to look at them yet - no pain so don't qualify for emergency treatment. Dreading it, as it's surely only a matter of time before they cause problems without treatment, and tooth pain is horrible.

MaudesMum · 14/10/2020 10:53

Nope. NHS dentist. Check up cancelled in May and the only contact since was a text a few days ago asking me to email them with my email address, so they "can contact you in future when we return to normal dentistry". Not looking good.

Xenia · 14/10/2020 11:05

Our NHS one says when we come in December people wait outside. I presume the 3 of us should stay in the car until the time and then we have 20 minutes each which I think is double the normal NHS time. Mine is normally even shorter as usually the teeth are fine. We have to bring our own mask and gloves which I am assuming can just be my normal winter gloves.
