Cats. As they are so popular on here (usually), can I please ask...

...is it possible for girl cats to be pretty and boy cats to be handsome ? Or are cats just cats, regardless of any positive facial features ? My Mum used to describe females as 'pretty pussycats' which I found to be a bit twee, in the nicest possible wayWink. I don't know what she thought of tom cats.

I think my girls look like girls? One is a tortie type colour which usually gives the game away but my black and white girlie is very dainty and light on her feet.

@Beamur

It's really interesting how easy it is to tell the sex of an adult cat. Despite neutering. How about this one?
Male.

@Toddlerteaplease but we all know Cheddar? Or is is just me that stalks cats on Mumsnet?

WildRosie · 13/10/2020 13:24

@NerfThis

My sibling boy/girl cats - I think you can tell
Difficult to tell, really. The wide-eyed stares are most distracting!

My two boys (brothers) are very different. One is delicate and dainty, known as the fairy cat, the other is a big butch bruiser of a beast but still very handsome. The fairy cat was thought to be a girl when he first arrived and named accordingly. It was only after the vet had a good rummage (he's very fluffy) that we found out he was male 😂

WildRosie · 13/10/2020 13:27

@Bickles

One of each but which is which of my black beauties?
The one furthest back is male.

I reckon the front one of Bickles' pic is the boy. 🙂

bluebluezoo · 13/10/2020 13:29

Unless it’s an entire tom or a tortie I doubt you can tell with any reliability.

Although I had a tortie for a long time and still it was roughly 50:50 people getting her sex right.

Horsemad · 13/10/2020 13:29

And Beamur's second pic is a bit too. 🙂

Horsemad · 13/10/2020 13:29

*boy not bit.

Beamur · 13/10/2020 13:32

WildRosie
This one is a girl. Maybe it's not so easy from a photo! Grin
She's pretty fierce too, unlike my old boy who was completely soppy.

Toddlerteaplease · 13/10/2020 13:37

@Mylittlesandwich this is for people who don't know Cheddar!

Fluffycloudland77 · 13/10/2020 13:39

My much missed boy was too pretty to be a boy.

Bickles · 13/10/2020 13:43

The front one is my boy cat, he’s long and lithe. The back one is my fluffy slightly chubby girl.
Black cats are so difficult to photograph!
They spend all day cuddling in that cat bed - they are not related.

Stompythedinosaur · 13/10/2020 14:03

I think the whole pretty/handsome thing has far more to do with our perception of gender than cat's actual faces.

I have pretty boy cats (dp is pretty too).

Horsemad. 50/50 so I'll go for a pretty boy.

Rainbowllama4 · 13/10/2020 17:34

As a rule girls are daintier but there are exceptions, my female cat is a huge chonk with a big head, my daughters boy is slim and dainty and what I would call feminine looking.

ThousandsAreSailing · 13/10/2020 17:39

Females usually have smaller heads. With toms it depends when you get their nuts off. Leaving it later gives you a bigger head but risks letting them start spraying. Get the nuts of early and they are less likely to spray but get a smaller head

TheOrchidKiller · 13/10/2020 17:42

My male cat (neutered) has a tiny, dinky face.
He won't let me take a photo as he's gone to bed & tucked his head under his back legs.

He was a rescue & I got to see the other cats he was found with- they hadn't had a great start to their 9 lives & were all small.

I've never really seen a cat & instantly decided it's definitely male or female (apart from the one on our street that's very much still intact). I just think "cat!" We had girl cats when I was a child & they were just average cats. In size anyway, there is nothing "average" about a moggy.

What about this one?
Those eyes 😍
Whatsmydoggy · 13/10/2020 17:45

Can anyone tell with mine? This is the best I can get of them both together. They are staring out the new pup hence the grumpy faces 😂
