How many supplements / vitamins do you take a day?

I take two (Vit D and Vit C). Just found out that my sister takes 14?! Various including turmeric, vitamins, something for her gut, agnus something or other, cod liver oil, etc

What's everyone else doing? Am I behind the times?

I take a bog standard supermarket multivitamin and mineral supplement. Given I eat a good diet it probably just gives me expensive wee.

I also take St John's Wort in the winter which doors seem to help with seasonal low mood.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 12/10/2020 15:10

I take vitamin D, which is prescribed. On top of that I take an iron tablet and vitamin C.

lurkingfromhome · 12/10/2020 15:20

I take a multivitamin and an extra Vitamin D. Both in the form of Boots gummies, which I prefer largely because they taste like wine gums. I eat a really good diet so am not convinced I need them but I'm sure they have some kind of placebo effect.

AdoraBell · 12/10/2020 15:22

Vit D daily due to a solar keratosis, now I cannot expose my skin to sunlight.

Occasionally Vit C, zinc and magnesium when I’m feeling under the weather.

Nottobesoldseparately · 12/10/2020 15:23

Nothing. Absolutely nothing.

I'm 45, should I be??

2020hello · 12/10/2020 15:23

Calcium
Magnesium
Iron
Multivitamin
Cod liver

But I was so unwell last year I need to take them and feel it if I don't.

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 12/10/2020 15:24

Just a standard multivitamin.

If you're in the UK it is recommended that you supplement vitamin D as we don't get enough sunlight.

It's up to you of course

lifesalongsong · 12/10/2020 15:26

None, I never have done.

I assumed they were for if you can't eat a balanced diet for some reason or know that you have a deficiency. Neither of those apply to me so not something I would buy. Your question kind of sounds like you think everyone takes them, is that true?

devildeepbluesea · 12/10/2020 15:27

None. I eat food and spend lots of time outside.

ANoTail · 12/10/2020 15:28

Nothing. I think the only thing I've ever taken for an extended period is an iron supplement when I was younger and suspected anaemic.

Holdingtherope · 12/10/2020 15:28

My memory is really affected if I don't take vitamin b and gingsing

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 12/10/2020 15:29

Vitamin D.

I eat a varied diet, but there are some days in winter when I never see sunlight, so I think I probably should.

I do occasionally have a Berocca if I'm feeling under the weather. At university I used to take Berocca for about a month around freshers week, and didn't seem to get freshers flu too badly, although it might have just been luck. The fizzing sounds energetic as well somehow, but that's definitely a placebo effect!

cheesecrack · 12/10/2020 15:30

Vitamin D and I'm trying to come off iron (and citalopram)

diplodocusinermine · 12/10/2020 15:32

D3 and K2 - there's increasing medical evidence that low vitamin D has an impact on how badly you fare if you contract Covid. K2 helps with vit D absorption.

Violetroselily · 12/10/2020 15:32

Vit B12, Vit D and folic acid - not pregnant or TTC, but I was folate deficient a year ago and had to be prescribed high dose, so trying to maintain a normal level with a supplement

Mylittlesandwich · 12/10/2020 15:32

I take a multivitamin. Nothing fancy. It's myvitamins A-Z. I do have a decent diet but the vitamin D is helpful and the rest won't do any harm.

Yogawithmydog · 12/10/2020 15:33

Vit B complex and Vit D.

Pretty sure it's NHS advice for everyone in UK to take extra Vit D as we just don't get enough at our latitude, in winter, even if outdoors all day. Just isn't strong enough light to make it.

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 12/10/2020 15:36

It's hard to get vitamin D from food. Fish has vitamin D and some dairy is fortified but it's still often not enough. The best source of vitamin D is sunlight but obviously that's hard to get in the UK.

It's also worth pointing out that we need vitamin D for calcium to be absorbed properly.

Yogawithmydog · 12/10/2020 15:36

Quick google, yup to taking Vit D in winter.

How many supplements / vitamins do you take a day?
BahHumbygge · 12/10/2020 15:48

Vitamin D3, 5000 iu. I monitor my estimated levels with the DMinder app and now it’s October and there’s no more D producing UVB rays, my levels are hovering around 117 nmol/l. Optimum levels are 100 - 150 nmol/l. I take a supplement which contains vitamin K2, as it’s important for the correct metabolism of calcium... it shepherds it to where it’s needed in the bones and teeth, and away from where it’s undesirable such as the kidneys and soft tissues.

Magnesium 100mg, another important part of vitamin D metabolism.

Zinc 30mg, crucial part of immune function. Gets depleted when the body is fighting infection.

Eat plant polyphenols such as quercetin & EGCG in red onions, green tea, colourful fruit & veg etc. Needed to help with zinc signalling so the Zn ions can cross the cell membrane.

Vitamin C, 500 mg

I take a multivitamin. I've had less digestive issues since I've been taking a probiotic and peppermint oil. Evening primrose oil has also helped managing my night sweats.
