Which pet/s would you never have again and why? (light-hearted)

No real reason, just wondering if any of you have or had animals you couldn't bring yourselves to have ever again and why?

I will never own Russian dwarf hamsters again. Bitey little sods.

Budgies: Christ, the noise! Constant chirruping, screeching, grating sounds, and the ACKACKACKACKACK din from them when you're sat there and your heads splitting, just NO.

Dogs: Have 2 at the moment, I don't see myself having them again in the future, like toddlers, always wanting attention, barking at nothing, standing in the bloody doorways of the room I need to go in, trying to get on my lap when I have a hot drink, etc, etc, I could go on😂

Rabbits: Too upsetting when they eventually die, I always think they're like small dogs without the constant fuss!

Like the title says, this is a light hearted thread, I'd never hurt an animal despite thinking WHY DID I GET THIS BLOODY THING?

Over to you lovely ladies!

Gerbils! They're smelly, bitey and boring. Grin

Imissmoominmama · 12/10/2020 13:28

Anything in a cage. It used to break my heart putting them back in after a play.

SoupDragon · 12/10/2020 13:29

I will never ever have a dog again. I'm so over the smell, the walking, not being able to just go away and the poo. I mean, he's adorable but... no.

Snap.

DS wants a pet for Christmas (I’ve told him Santa doesn’t do live animals) so I’m looking forward to reading all the reasons why I shouldn’t give in to him!

I wouldn’t get fish again, they spend most of the time hiding and I’m stuck with a bloody tank and filters to clean now.

Brendabigbaps · 12/10/2020 13:36

Guinea pigs.
Hay everywhere (7yr old doesn’t understand de-haying the pigs before carrying them round the house)
They produce their own body weight in poo a day which needs clearing up every day (fleece bedding)
Adorably cute tho

Soubriquet · 12/10/2020 13:38

Guinea pigs/ rabbits here too

I love the idea of them but they are hard work

Fish..again. Adore fish but the cycling and filtering and the cleaning is a ball ache

Dogs. I adore my dogs, but I wouldn’t want anymore. Dh disagrees on this one

I think the only animal I would definitely get again is a cat. So much easier

Collidascope · 12/10/2020 13:40

Fish. Had them when I was young. They're just crap. They're not loving or funny or cute-looking. You can't cuddle them. They're mainly just there for the cool tank paraphernalia, and frankly once you've got fish poo floating along the top, that becomes unappealing too.

KitMarlowesCodpiece · 12/10/2020 13:40

Hamsters. They're cunts.

DuesToTheDirt · 12/10/2020 13:42

Same here with Russian Dwarf hamsters. Mice are great, and so are Syrian hamsters.

jeremypaxo · 12/10/2020 13:42

A very fluffy cat. Two words: poo clumps Envy

GoldenHoops · 12/10/2020 13:43

Tortoise.
She was given to us, which really annoyed me as I wasn't asked.
She is adorable but a constant worry tbh.
The dogs on the other hand I wouldn't be without.

anniversarywoes · 12/10/2020 13:43

A cat!!! While I always admired their 'zero fucks given' attitude to everything. They were clearly freeloaders that hung around to be fed and would have stepped over any of us if we had collapsed on the floor. They also licked their bums everywhere when we went out and we had to clean the worktops, table etc whenever they were left alone. Dh fondly named the erm, 'residue' poo crumbs Confused

Now we have a little dog, oh my the joy! She literally lives for us and is the most loyal, loving pet we've ever had. The dc have never tired of her and she's an endless source of fun for us all Grin

Phyllidakettle · 12/10/2020 13:59

An African grey parrot, the mess they create is unbelievable. Loved my partner, hated me. So vicious and nasty with a hell of a bite. I was secretly glad when it popped it’s clogs!

Strokethefurrywall · 12/10/2020 14:07

Another one for dogs. I've got 2 aging mutts and once they're gone I'm done for at least a decade, especially with kids.

Double coated, 80lbs of fluff. Love them but they once they're off I will be relieved.

But we have an active humane society here and I know full well that DH will be off down the shelter and sneaking home another one before I know it.

I not so secretly long for a Leonberger and until I live in the appropriate climate (currently in the Caribbean!) I can live without any kind of dog.

Itsagrandoldteam · 12/10/2020 14:10

Budgies - they do my head in.

Jody21 · 12/10/2020 14:29

We have had everything over the years from fish, mice, hamsters, rabbits etc. We currently have 2 dogs but I have made it very clear that when they are gone that will be the end of pets in this house. Kids are grown up now so don't think this will be an issue, when they were smaller they always wanted some kind of pet. I think it's good for kids to have a pet and to have responsibility of taking care of one, of course it was mostly left to me to do the cleaning up! I look forward to the day when I hoover up the last dog hair from every surface in the house or pick up the last bag of poo! I look forward to being able to head off on a weekend break or book a holiday without having to sort out a babysitter for the dogs. One of mine has 'issues' so booking them into a kennel for a few days is not an option. Everything has to be arranged to suit the dogs, they are more work than they kids were!

Fckingfuming · 12/10/2020 14:31

Thanks for all the responses so far to each and every one of you. I'm sat here grinning that I'm not alone in my secret thoughts wrt 'Pet regret' Grin

I have to admit I know what some of you mean about the fish, DH has a large pond that takes up copious amounts of room in the garden they're boring, don't do anything, randomly die, and I view them as an expensive ornament that requires too much bloody maintenance.

Fortunately I've never had the joy of owning a parrot, I thought the budgies were bad enough!

Alternatively, I have a few snakes, I would never in a million years have considered owning one never mind five until this year! Totally love them and would have fifty if I could!

TroysMammy · 12/10/2020 14:37

Stick insects. Considering they don't have sex they lay loads of eggs, their legs fall off and they walk like they have a stutter. They only eat privet leaves and there are no privet hedges in my area.

Soubriquet · 12/10/2020 14:43

I think people underestimate snakes

As long as their environment is stable, they are piss easy.

Happy to be handled or left alone.

Food given once a week and done. One happy snake

The last snake I had was a Californian king snake that I called fluffy.

He loved females but hated males. (Humans)

He would be docile as anything if me or dd handled him, but if dh even went near the viv he would strike at the glass Grin

Wasn’t too bothered by ds though...

Fckingfuming · 12/10/2020 14:43

@ TroysMammy OMG my neighbour once told me when their DSs were young (a good while ago) her entire house was infested with stick insects! I can't remember if she said they had been on holiday or something, but for some reason the things had literally taken over. She said it took days to catch them all Shock

Soubriquet · 12/10/2020 14:47

Dd and Fluffy

Snooper22 · 12/10/2020 14:47

Dwarf hamsters are a flipping nightmare, they kept escaping and were cannibals.
Fish are nice but expensive to maintain and a nightmare to clean also a new fish can wipe out the others.
Cats are a pain in the arse when they are older such whining buggers that get under your feet.
Rabbits are cute, we have 4 they never stop eating and constantly shitting.

I love my little dog 🐕 💙

bodgeitandscarper · 12/10/2020 14:48

Horses - constant money pit, you resign yourself to stinking of horse sweat and wee, constant mud in winter, having to be up with the larks, worry they are eating too much/not enough. Never off the phone to farriers, vets, hay merchants, saddle fitters, physio's. No holidays as not on livery, maintaining land never ending. After 50 odd years I'm done! Still love them from a distance.
Dogs, love them but so tying, parents are too old to dogsit for us, plus hairs, muddy paws, vet bills, having to walk regardless of weather. Drool has glue like properties on tiled flooring. Needy. Fart a lot, probably due to raiding a bin or stealing food. Expect we will always have dogs though.
Ferrets, gorgeous little things, but omg the smell!

Chickens, trashed the garden, terrorised the dogs and cats, ate the frogs that ventured from the pond. Poo's were like landmines to navigate. Good eggs though.
Cats, no real issues providing you are a slave to their every whim, can cope with shredded furniture and cat sick in random places, usually as an unexpected guest arrives.

Dandelionflower · 12/10/2020 14:51

I have a 9 month old lab puppy. That's all I have to say Grin he's amazing and I love him so much
