Which pet/s would you never have again and why? (light-hearted)

No real reason, just wondering if any of you have or had animals you couldn't bring yourselves to have ever again and why?

I will never own Russian dwarf hamsters again. Bitey little sods.

Budgies: Christ, the noise! Constant chirruping, screeching, grating sounds, and the ACKACKACKACKACK din from them when you're sat there and your heads splitting, just NO.

Dogs: Have 2 at the moment, I don't see myself having them again in the future, like toddlers, always wanting attention, barking at nothing, standing in the bloody doorways of the room I need to go in, trying to get on my lap when I have a hot drink, etc, etc, I could go on😂

Rabbits: Too upsetting when they eventually die, I always think they're like small dogs without the constant fuss!

Like the title says, this is a light hearted thread, I'd never hurt an animal despite thinking WHY DID I GET THIS BLOODY THING?

Over to you lovely ladies!

Never again:
Stick insects (gave me the creeps)
Goldfish (too messy)
Syrian hamsters (too nocturnal)
Guinea pigs (I love them but am allergic)
Dog (maybe not for a while rather than never)

I would have:
Cats
Gerbils (only if DH cleans them)

I vaguely want, but won't get:
Parrot
Rats
More cats

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 12/10/2020 17:01

Crocodile. They can be rather grumpy at times and consequently can get a bit snappy! Grin

Mutabilis · 12/10/2020 17:01

Tarantulas. I had five at one point and loved them and miss them (all re-homed happily) they are fascinating creatures BUT their food, I still, years later, feel sick remembering the smell of the crickets and the way they'd always attack and even eat each other, despite trying to keep them in a nice tank. I would never keep anything that requires crickets or similar as food again. I don't think I would keep any pets again actually, I've discovered a love of travel since having kids (and not having the time, freedom or money to travel) before kids I had too many pets to travel easily, so I'm looking forward to freedom once my kids are older.

Glad I read this. I haven’t had a dog for 25 years. Was contemplating a rescue but this has brought the memories flooding back.

Collidascope · 12/10/2020 17:29

Joffmognum

Your story about helping your guinea pigs defecate is one of the most weirdly gross yet touching posts on here Grin

TheOrchidKiller · 12/10/2020 18:34

I've heard that ducks can be little buggers @Sarahlou63.

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles crocodiles?

I wouldn't get rabbits again. They were lovely & had a huge enclosed run in the garden, & we spent a lot of time with them. But they beat 7 bells out of each other & we had to split them up. No amount of reconcilliation measures could repair their relationship. The most aggressive one pined on its own & got depressed, unless it could see its "mate". So we had to divide the run with chicken wire so they could sit next to each other, occasionally licking each other through the holes. But if that fence hadn't been there I'm sure there would've been a blood bath.

Seven long years we did this! The angry one died & the other one lived for quite a while after that. They say to get a replacement but it seemed happier living a single life. I was quite fond of it, & it used to nuzzle up for a cuddle, but I wouldn't have one again.

Dowser · 12/10/2020 18:41

Oh yes forgot about fish
The number of tanks that burst over the floor 😱

Would love a dog, I really would but can’t stand doggy smells, the poi’s, the weed , being tied by them, them dying

Still would love one though

Dowser · 12/10/2020 18:46

Love budgies but hate the way they pop all over so won’t have one again
Won’t have water dragons either... argh the number of times live crickets got out of the cage

To be fair it was my sons. He left home with home for a bit of independence and came back with two
In a cage the size of a small wardrobe.
It actually was a small wardrobe he converted

Loved my son so much
Wanted him back and had to accept the dragons

Dowser · 12/10/2020 18:49

@cobblers123
I know exactly what you mean
I’ve had 5 Persians over time
Never more than three at once
Bloody hard work but fabulous characters

WhoseThatGirl · 12/10/2020 18:51

Hamsters - biting, boring and thick
Guinea pigs - effort to reward ratio is poor

BumpkinSpiceBatty · 12/10/2020 18:51

My house rabbit was a arsehole!
Scratched up all the carpets, chewed through the wires and corners of plasterboard.
Thumped his giant back leg if he didn't get his own way.
Humped anything that was vaguely his size even after being fixed.
Then to top it all off the bigger started pissing in my slippers.
Absolute arsehole.

GooodMythicalMorning · 12/10/2020 18:53

Rabbits, all but 1 out of four was cuddley. They get ill easily and hide it so die easily or get stolen and eaten by foxes. They also are hutch destroyers. In 6 years we've been through 5 hutches. Not cheap ones either. (Most pets at home ones aren't big enough for a standard rabbit) They're made out to be child friendly but actually are quite hard work for very little pay off. The friendliest ones are house rabbits but then you have the mess to contend with.

Dowser · 12/10/2020 18:56

@Joffmognum
My cousin had 21
Never mowed her lawn in 10 years

LazyFace · 12/10/2020 18:57

Well, I've just spent close to £1000 on sodding fish tanks, plants, heaters, decor and all kinds of crap.... and I got so sodding fed up with the whole cycling crap and pooping around with little test kits that I've put them all back up on ebay. So I never even had fish but I won't ever have them again. 😂

lljkk · 12/10/2020 19:01

most things: too much time.

Parrots, Rats: chew everything, may bite, need a lot of attention.

Guinea pigs: boring

Have had before & Might consider again: fish, hamster, dog, ducks, cat...

Especially fish tank & dog.

Notgoingouttoday · 12/10/2020 19:06

This is hilarious! I have had a lot of pets:

Hamsters - escaped and chewed the house wiring
Mice - smelly but fun when I was a child
Rabbits and guinnea pigs - easy to keep in the garden but didn't really like being handled so not good pets. I have the scars to prove it.
Cats - Great company but scratched the furniture and left black hairs on everything. Demanding but would consider again if I was old and lonely!
Dogs - Very loving but too much hard work and I hate picking up dog poo around the garden. Anything but the smallest dog is too strong for me to handle on a lead when it sees a squirrel (and we have lots).
Chickens and ducks - too messy and I don't eat enough eggs to justify keeping them.
Goats - wonderful characters but hard to contain and they like to eat shrubs and trees (had to use mains electric fencing to stop them escaping)
Horses - these are my favourite but very expensive. Most rewarding pet and are the least trouble. I will always have a horse for as long as I am able to.

PencilFace · 12/10/2020 19:13

Mrsfussypants1 That is the most accurate description of dog owning I have ever read and why I will never get another!

AuntieJoyce · 12/10/2020 19:14

Dwarf hamsters are basically bitey furballs with huge bollocks.

Rabbits either live a miserable hutchbound existence or destroy your home including all electricals and then die tragically young once everyone has lost their heart to them. Terrible pets

Cats do seem very easy to keep unless you are my DD whose Bengal has taken the house apart and shredded her lower arm and hands on many an occasion.

I have a beardie he’s a very nice pet. I never buy crickets though unless I can avoid it. Too stinky and every time you feed a few more to him there is a little less singing in the cricket pen. Like an insect version of And then there were none, it gets quieter every night till eventually it goes silent

Shannith · 12/10/2020 19:14

Fish god no - had some in my twenties and the cleaning was such as faff for little reward.

Nothing that lives in a cage, thankfully DD shares my feelings on this and even if she didn't, not a chance. My friend who I lived with had 2 rats that were great fun and were mostly free roaming but when they died that was it.

Had a budgie/a growing up. Always felt sorry for it/then.

I've always had a rescue cat or two floating around and would have more. They are no bother at all.

I foster dogs so get my fix without the long term commitment. Though I suspect one day one will worm its way in. One of the current cats was a feral foster that seems to be staying put.

Horse - yes but probably never my own. My current one is a share so I get 3 days a week and all the fun and little worry that I'll end up with an expensive field ornament.

DD is desperate for a pony and a full time dog. We'll see. I've not had a foster for a while but looks like one is imminent so we'll see if she's prepared to walk it everyday in the dark and rain after school. She's actually very good and is designated poo picker upper so it's probably just a matter of time.

Pony would be a share/loan until she's big enough for something we could share. She thinks she's big enough already. She's not!

FireUnderpants · 12/10/2020 19:21

Hamsters.

I'm terrified they'll bite me. Every single one DC have ever had has escaped at least once. When there is one AWOL, they're upset they'll never see it again and I'm worried about it chewing a cable and burning us all to death while we sleep.

Last year at one point DC all had one each, so we had three. When the girls ones died I was very quick to dismantle the houses and replacements were not even discussed.

And everyone gets upset when they do die. When DD1 was small we replaced hers several times with out noticing as we wimped out of telling her. Luckily Colin the Original was a very generic looking guy. To this day she has never suspected despite even recently mentioning how amazing it was he lived until 6......

outofthemoon · 12/10/2020 19:24

Rabbits. They need company and exercise. We had a pair that lived for aeons, very high maintenance. When one died the other lingered alone for a very sad year, despite moving into the house with us (and biting through all the wiring).

BittersweetMemories · 12/10/2020 19:38

Oh god so many.

African Pygmy Hedgehog (didn't even want him in the first place but an acquaintance was moving abroad and going to set him free in the garden....) Mean, spiky, stinking hissing little mare he was. And he did that annointing thing and I thought he had rabies. Never again.

Russian dwarf hamsters. Crazy little phsycotic creatures that run at the speed of light and flung themselves off of everything, even when 8 ft off the ground. The pet shop said they could life together but the tried to murder each other so had to spend another £80 off quid on a second cage set up. Bastard's.

Rabbit - much harder to look after than anticipated, as much work as a dog really but less reward because she just stomped at everything all the time even though she lived a queen rabbits life. Chewed all my stuff, peed on everything and ended up getting some weird eye duct infection that cost £5000 to fix and various travelling across the country to rabbit specialist vets only for her to randomly die 7 weeks later anyway. Nope.

We currently have 2 dogs, who are the best and I will always have dogs although the walking in the crap weather and the barking is annoying.

A Syrian hamster who is amazing, she's like a teeny weeny little dog with her little hands and cheek pouches except she escaped and chewed through the cables in my tumble dryer, costing me £200 so probably won't get another one of those.

A sphynx kitten who is basically my child and she's so lovely and warm and cuddly but she screams at everything and has shredded my legs to bits so there are downsides 😂

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 12/10/2020 19:38

Dogs - too smelly.

Rabbits on the other hand, love them! They are expensive, need loads of attention, make a mess - but so worth it if you have the time to look after them well.

Soubriquet · 12/10/2020 19:42

So glad you took him! He would have died if set loose in the wild!

Ylvamoon · 12/10/2020 19:43

Fish just boring and awful to clean. I'm done with having my hand with fishy water! But have to say one thing for "Vinegar" the goldfish: she / he used to swim up and had his/ her back "scrathed" ... only for me though, was scared of the DC! DC & lost interest in 3 seconds... after begging for fish for months!

Rabbits, they are messy and ours lived in the garden... used to spray/ piss on you when going out there... on the other hand always cute sitting by the back door beginning for treats.

Dogs I love them to bits, they are loyal and have best mates quantities. But feel that I need a break from the mess, being tied down & having to take them out every day!
