Which pet/s would you never have again and why? (light-hearted)

No real reason, just wondering if any of you have or had animals you couldn't bring yourselves to have ever again and why?

I will never own Russian dwarf hamsters again. Bitey little sods.

Budgies: Christ, the noise! Constant chirruping, screeching, grating sounds, and the ACKACKACKACKACK din from them when you're sat there and your heads splitting, just NO.

Dogs: Have 2 at the moment, I don't see myself having them again in the future, like toddlers, always wanting attention, barking at nothing, standing in the bloody doorways of the room I need to go in, trying to get on my lap when I have a hot drink, etc, etc, I could go on😂

Rabbits: Too upsetting when they eventually die, I always think they're like small dogs without the constant fuss!

Like the title says, this is a light hearted thread, I'd never hurt an animal despite thinking WHY DID I GET THIS BLOODY THING?

Over to you lovely ladies!

@Soubriquet very true wrt snakes. I have a Corn, and 4 Ball Pythons, and did wonder about adding a Cali King at some point in future, I won't let DH see this thread in case he thinks they're all men haters they're gorgeous. Are they good eaters? I've read they're like dustbins, and will take anything thats given to them (food-wise). Grin

The only problems I've had so far with the BP's is one of the largest (female) has been known to sometimes refuse food, I used to get really stressed about her, but now I just think 'meh, try again next week' and offer the rat to any others that look interested!

Hamsters. Evil little shits.

Degus. Sounded perfect on paper - active in daytime, sociable, playful, not bitey, live quite a long time (the heartbreak each time a rat died was awful).

Nope - they need a million miles more space than the breeder said, are active at night too and are soooooooo messy. For about a decade.

Soubriquet · 12/10/2020 14:58

Most king snakes are dustbins but Fluffy was awkward.

He would have a chick one week, then would refuse it the next. However he wouldn’t take mice fluffs so he would have to have two or three mice pinkies followed by a rat pinkie. Total diva

Don't mind the fish, do mind the frogs (African dwarf frogs I think?). They aren't nearly as much fun as you'd think, and require special food which lives in the freezer - you have to pop an ice cube's worth out every evening, cut an eighth off (yes as bad as it sounds). And of course try to explain this to the poor sods who offered to feed them whilst we're away... And the food is really grim to add insult to injury.

KetoPenguin · 12/10/2020 15:02

I was going to say dwarf hamster as too bitey!

MrsEricBana · 12/10/2020 15:03

Guinea pigs. They eat, they poo, they look terrified. The dcs wanted them so much and it was all awful. I cared for them for 6 years, I loved them, and all they did THE WHOLE 6 YEARS was eat, poo and look terrified. I felt so guilty about it all that I did myself in trying to make it better for them.. I would strongly advise against caged pets. Cats - yes. Dogs - 🥰🥰🥰🥰

Fckingfuming · 12/10/2020 15:08

@Soubriquet Lovely snake! And daughter also I assume! She looks very comfortable with Fluffy.

@bodgeitandscarper I forgot about Chickens! We've had them too, but like you say they tear up the garden and terrorise the other pets. Once shot out of the loo to howling DDog1 (DChick had her pinned against the bins investigating DDogs back legs with a very strong beak) Poor dog was terrified, and was always vv wary after Grin

I’ve had all sorts over the years. Mice, hamsters, birds, rabbits, dogs, cats, and my eXH had fish....

Mice - they breed like you wouldn’t believe, and stink regardless of how often you clean them out.

Hamsters - nocturnal, bite, just generally shit pets and pointless.

Rabbits, to much worry that they’ll be killed by foxes.

Birds - I had budgies and they were lovely enough, but they just didn’t live long enough.

African Grey parrot - I loved him, he had been hand-reared and was completely tame. But the mess was horrendous and he needed constant attention. When I fell ill four years ago I just couldn’t give him the attention he needed and had to rehome him, but he lives in a wildlife park with lots of other parrots....

Cats - kill things and get themselves killed out on the roads too easily....

Fish are just dull...

bodgeitandscarper · 12/10/2020 15:21

@fckingfuming, 😂😂 yes, ours ruled the roost literally! We went out for the day and one of them got in through the cat flap, explored the house and smashed a crystal decanter, and then ate the lot! 😯 Her crop crunched for a couple of days, but she was right as rain. Sadly didn't lay crystal eggs though.

Fckingfuming · 12/10/2020 15:22

I'm peeing myself laughing at these posts. Totally get the terrified guinea pigs. They always look like they've heard something terrible and need to get it off their chest.Grin

@Pootles34 totally understand the grim food. I can't help but feel sorry for the unfortunate little rats/mice I have to defrost every few days to feed my snakes. So that's something else I couldn't keep as pets, it'd feel too weird plus I'd get snake bites smelling of rats if I forgot to wash between handling the pet rats and feeding the frozen thawed ones to the snakes The good thing is you can go away for a week or two and not worry about someone coming in to feed them, they'll eat when you get back!.

Definitely Russian hamsters. Look cute but too bitey.
Had cornsnakes for 20 years, last one died last year. No more, they are great pets, glad I had them but not interested in having another.

catwithflowers · 12/10/2020 15:26

Chickens. They are evil, the dog and cats are wary of them and their reptilian ways, they wreck the garden and smell. Ours chase me round the garden looking for food. Never again. We don't even eat eggs that often 😬 🥚. After four years the novelty has definitely worn off.

TheShapeJaper · 12/10/2020 15:26

Cats. Never again.

Hoppinggreen · 12/10/2020 15:27

I have had most animals in my time and currently have 2 cats, a dog and a gecko. I will not be getting any more animals as the current ones “leave”. I have done my bit now

TabithaTadpole · 12/10/2020 15:27

DH has a large pond that takes up copious amounts of room in the garden they're boring, don't do anything, randomly die, and I view them as an expensive ornament that requires too much bloody maintenance.

You need yourself a local heron Grin

I would never ever ever get a Bengal cat again, noisy, screechy, demented little bastard (I love him really).

Cute photo Soubriquet.

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 12/10/2020 15:31

Another one for guinea pigs. We have two and they are very cute and cuddly and we love them. But...they are also smelly, their hay goes everywhere and actually aren't cheap pets as they go through so much hay and need cleaning out quite a lot.

If DS ever wants a pet in the future it definitely won't be guinea pigs Grin.

Saz12 · 12/10/2020 15:32

Ooh, I liked keeping chickens. Pekin bantams are great as the poo disappears into the lawn. Incredibly low maintenance and always happy to see me come home from work.
Currently have guinea pigs. I’m very fond of them, they’re tame enough to tolerate cuddles (but don’t really want them), and stupid enough to be easy to keep occupied with a big cage in the house and freedom of the hallway when we’re home. But... there not engaging creatures!

fastandthecurious · 12/10/2020 15:37

Rabbits, they are just so so hard to look after properly and in a way that they get a good life. I'm astonished that they are marketed as children's pets tbh. They are so expensive and take up so much time. I loved mine but god I'd never own another. Also they were both killed by a fox literally the day we got home from hospital after a rough birth with DS. We had a very secure shed with a run attached to the outside but my little brother hadn't locked it properly and a fox got in and killed them both😢

Fckingfuming · 12/10/2020 15:38

@bodgeitandscarper. Jeeeez, a crystal decanter?Shock I'm surprised you didn't get shredded chicken or scrambled eggs

They're hardy little buggers aren't they!

Mine were EXTREMELY nosy and always hungry, and were always in the kitchen looking for scraps. DH used to say the chickens congregating at the bottom of the garden, eyeballing the back door was like watching Chariots of Fire when he opened it to let the dogs out. Them running to the kitchen was hilarious!

Oh, another. I love dogs but we had two spaniels growing up. I would never get another. We probably got unlucky but they were so horrifically neurotic I'd never try it again.

One would wake up snarling at us, would lie under the table snarling at us, and would snarl into his dish as he ate. He would eat anything - knickers, socks, handkerchiefs, screws, money, chocolates. He would routinely start to howl at about half 3 in the morning because he wanted company. If we went out, he howled so the neighbours could hear. The only person he never bit was my dad, who he was slavishly devoted to.

The other one was utterly sweet tempered but could clear walls of over six feet tall. He would leap the wall between our house and our neighbours' and go into their house and eat their cat's breakfast. He would leap the wall on the other side because squirrels lived there, and we'd have many hair-raising moments of realising he's escaped and was running up the road, and we'd have to pursue him. He could run 30 miles beside my dad's bike and still have energy afterwards. He also used to howl when left alone, and was so scared of my parents' obese friend that he had explosive diarrhea all over the house after meeting him for the first time. He also ate everything - socks, knickers etc.

You might think my parents were just shit dog owners, but our other dogs were all fairly sane.

Hailtomyteeth · 12/10/2020 15:43

House rabbits. Because eventually they decide that every hidden place is a latrine.

Nothing beats the joy, though, of having worked your arse off cleaning the house, to find four minilops stretched out in the centre of the sitting room carpet wearing their 'this is all my own work' expressions.

SabrinaThwaite · 12/10/2020 15:47

Anything with little scurrying feet.

Fish, dull and needs loads of maintenance.

Tadpolesandfroglets · 12/10/2020 15:49

Dogs. No more dogs. Can’t go anywhere or do anything, so tying and clingy. I loved them but it was like having another child....endless hair everywhere, stinky wet fur, mud everywhere....neurotic! Plus Zero self worth! Not like cats! 😂 I think I definitely prefer the low maintenance of felines.

jarviscockatiel · 12/10/2020 15:49

African pygmy hedgehogs. Our one looked totally adorable but would hiss and snarl if you so much as spoke to her. Her teeth were only a couple of millimetres long but she could sink those fangs into you and make you bleed. She never came out until we were in bed and naturally wasn't cuddly. We loved her but never again...

Ah see I can’t wait to get an APH again, but I think it helps if they are relatively tame

Mine was fine. Was huffy when you first got him out but mellowed out quickly. He was a cool little dude

But bonding between you and then can take a lot of effort

They are not low maintenance pets
