Which pet/s would you never have again and why? (light-hearted)

No real reason, just wondering if any of you have or had animals you couldn't bring yourselves to have ever again and why?

I will never own Russian dwarf hamsters again. Bitey little sods.

Budgies: Christ, the noise! Constant chirruping, screeching, grating sounds, and the ACKACKACKACKACK din from them when you're sat there and your heads splitting, just NO.

Dogs: Have 2 at the moment, I don't see myself having them again in the future, like toddlers, always wanting attention, barking at nothing, standing in the bloody doorways of the room I need to go in, trying to get on my lap when I have a hot drink, etc, etc, I could go on😂

Rabbits: Too upsetting when they eventually die, I always think they're like small dogs without the constant fuss!

Like the title says, this is a light hearted thread, I'd never hurt an animal despite thinking WHY DID I GET THIS BLOODY THING?

Over to you lovely ladies!

@catwithflowers ours used to follow me around the garden, and would randomly jump at me to see if I had food. Totally get the dinosaur link, they were like raptors!

@TabithaTadpole Funnily enough one flies over every so often, DH comes in muttering 'that bloody heron's back again' --I secretly wish it would land here on the garden to give him a scare Grin
Also so glad I stuck out DD, and said no to a Bengal. She can have one when she moves out if she still wants one then!

@Saz12 Pekins sound good, I loved having the chickens but the mess put me off.

Never again a red 6 ft iguana.. Nasty bite in my arm - still have the scar! Just glad I atoll have my bloody arm tbh!!

Andante57 · 12/10/2020 16:00

With great sadness I have to say an Italian Greyhound.
We adore our Iggy but dh says we can’t have another one when she pops her clogs as she has been a nightmare to house train.
Our whippet learned in a couple of weeks but not the Iggy: she specialises in going to rooms which are little used such as my son’s (working abroad at the mo) and going just where the foot falls.

A cat. After having five in the past, all from kittens, the current one was a rescue cat and around four years old.

He's the worst cat I've ever had.

He is hairy, doesn't just meow, he shouts all the time, has very sharp claws that dig in when he sits on me which if he had his way would be 24 hours a day, every day! He has also over the past three or four months started being picky with his food, so I am constantly chucking away food that he decides he doesn't like one day but eats the same brand a few days later quite happily.

He is messy, has huge paws usually covered in mud and despite my best efforts with brushing still gets matts in his fur and won't let me get them out. He is a nightmare to flea and worm, I now (until Covid) go to the vets to get him treated as he was just too strong for me to hold and give the treatment.

He's ruined furniture, my blinds in the lounge, carpets and my clothes with his claws and my garden with his digging and repeatedly opens cupboard doors in the kitchen and hall and I have absolutely no idea why. I have a constant trail of muddy paw prints in the utility and kitchen every time it rains whenever he goes outside.

He worships me but unfortunately, I don't worship him. I will not get another cat once he has gone. I do have rather a long wait though ...

@Collidascope That sounds terrible. It's upsetting when people blame the owners. Sometimes it just IS the dog.

Tortoise- cute and amusing but truly are wild animals who need to roam for miles each day, preferably somewhere far warmer than here. I can't think how they have ever thought to be suitable pets. Plus he chases the dog who is terrified of him!

stardance · 12/10/2020 16:23

We had dwarf hamsters and goldfish, wouldn't bother with those again. Currently have two rabbits, wouldn't have rabbits again. Also have two cats, would probably have cats again. I can see us getting a dog one day and regretting it! I'm not really a dog person, but a family member got a puppy recently and my goodness he is adorable! Plus I know the kids would love one.

Fckingfuming · 12/10/2020 16:23

@cobblers123 The reason DH won't have a cat is similar to yours, in the respect that they can be very scratchy both on you and the furniture, and literally ruin your hard earned home. He also doesn't like the cruelty some dish out to little birds/mice. No quick kills and eat, just torture for however long the poor little thing lasts before expiring.

Another vote for stick insects. The adults are gross when their legs fall off and the baby ones escape and get all over the house for months after you think you don't have them any more.

Bluntness100 · 12/10/2020 16:29

Tortoise. Does sod all, you don’t know how old they are, and if they are actually hibernating or dead.

Guinea pigs, can’t see the point I used to look after a friends, didn’t see the attraction myself,

AlwaysLatte · 12/10/2020 16:30

Anything that needs its environment recreated because it can't live in ours - fish, reptiles, etc. So much work, unnatural and awful when it goes wrong.

cobblers123 · 12/10/2020 16:30

@Fckingfuming It's such a shame in a way as he's a lovely cat but he is just so much hard work. I did at one point have three cats at the same time and they were absolute saints compared to this one and I never had any damage to either furniture or anything else in the house either.

Oh, apart from one shinning up the Christmas tree one year but she didn't actually break anything.

He really has put the nail in the coffin for me to ever contemplate having another one. I don't blame your DH.

Upherefordancing · 12/10/2020 16:32

To the gerbil-haters, they are the most beautiful, magical creatures, and apparently five times as intelligent as hamsters...

boarboar · 12/10/2020 16:32

Dogs.

I love him so so very much but I'm fed up of the constant muck, associated cleaning, extra expense, shredded post and always getting tripped over wherever I go. I swear he'd get inside my skin if he could. He's getting easier now he's old but I'm TIRED of it.

In fact after a long long break I'd have another but an oldie rescue who just wants to lay down all day and is probably a max. 5 year commitment.

Joffmognum · 12/10/2020 16:35

Personally I find guinea pigs to be the least offensive of rodents, but they’re still a pain in winter when they have to stay inside most of the day.

Personally I wouldn’t get make guinea pigs again. I love girls but when boys get old, they lose their ability to go to the toilet and get poo stuck in their bum. We had to manually help them go to the toilet everyday. Before we realised we had to do this, for the first one this affected, it had built up into a hard ball inside him and we had to let it soak it the bath so it dissolved and was removed that way. Both lived to be very old and so we had to do this for a while until they died. They didn’t seem to mind at first but when one of them got frail and ill and became dehydrated easily, the poo would get hard and hurt him on the way out. We put him down soon after.

It’s not super common - ours just lived very long! According to our vet not many people bother paying for healthcare for their guinea pigs Blush

So yeah I wouldn’t get boys again. Have 3 girls atm

AlwaysLatte · 12/10/2020 16:35

Also, anything that wakes you up at night. Luckily our dog only does it once in a while. Really not sure about a dog next time though, might get a cat if I can guarantee it won't pee or poop indoors - my worst nightmare!

Joffmognum · 12/10/2020 16:36

*wouldnt get MALE guinea pigs again

MJMG2015 · 12/10/2020 16:36

@Soubriquet

Dd and Fluffy
You can keep the snake, but can I adopt DD? She's very cute 😀
AlwaysLatte · 12/10/2020 16:36

6 foot iguana???
😱

Mrsfussypants1 · 12/10/2020 16:39

Dogs! Especially on crappy weather days like today. The contstant walks, the chewing, the neediness, the wanting to pee on everything, picking up giant poo snd carrying it for miles till you find a bin then watching another dog walker totally ignoring their own dog poo, standing in other dog poo while walking in the park, dogs of leash coming up to attack ours, huge vet bill from this, the neediness, the barking for attention, the expense of doggy day care god i could go on! We did love our dog tremendously but never ever again.

Mrsfussypants1 · 12/10/2020 16:40

Oh and the smell of wet dog! I just cant.

catwithflowers · 12/10/2020 16:40

@Fckingfuming Ours are so bold too. If we ever eat outside in the summer (north of England so a pretty rare occurrence!) they jump up on the table to grab food and run off with it. I never knew chickens could run so fast!!

They routinely try to get into the conservatory to eat the cat food and seem to seek out my newest plants, the ones I've spent months lovingly growing from seed, and snap the heads off, gleefully.

They are truly evil 😬🤬

SoupDragon · 12/10/2020 16:41

magical creatures

Gerbils are like unicorns?

MJMG2015 · 12/10/2020 16:43

@WhatWouldJKRDo

Hamsters. Evil little shits.

Degus. Sounded perfect on paper - active in daytime, sociable, playful, not bitey, live quite a long time (the heartbreak each time a rat died was awful).

Nope - they need a million miles more space than the breeder said, are active at night too and are soooooooo messy. For about a decade.

A few people have said Hamsters.

I think we were spoilt with our little girl. She was an absolute little delight. Albeit a bit of an escape artist!

I'd never have a dwarf though, the sylvanian was difficult enough to keep contained/find when she escaped etc!

Loved our Guinea Pigs too and would happily have those again

Cats/dogs/budgies/horse... I don't think there's a pet we've had that I wouldn't have again. Though there are parts of all of their care I could do without! 🤣.

Sarahlou63 · 12/10/2020 16:49

Ducks. Smelly, shit in their pond. Stupid. Don't lay eggs. The last straw was when they started bullying the chickens. Got released into a nearby river.
