When do you stop drying laundry outside?

I've still put mine out on dry days. Even though it can take near all day to dry but saves using tumble or having it over radiators. My ndn said she stops by mid Sept as not nice enough out.
Today has only been 11 degrees and cloudy but I've dried towels and our bedding. Dh uniform and 1 other load.
I've just seen weather is nice midweek 13. So plan to do kids beds then rather than tomorrow and tumbling? I'm now thinking my neighbours think I'm odd 😂

Out of interest why is everyone so against tumble dryers? Is it an environmental thing?

For me, yes it’s environmental. I hate wasting energy. DH hates “wasting” money (he’d rather spend the money things he can see). I used to tumble dry but it spoiled a lot of our clothes. I do have a washer dryer but next time I need a new machine it will just be a washer. I can’t remember the last time I used the dryer.....

Yes, environmental, power costs, they damage clothes. I dislike the synthetic smell that tumble dried clothes have.

But for me it is the positive benefits of line drying that drives my decision. I have owned a tumble drier in the past, and I could afford to run one, but I choose not to have one.

Smell of clothes dried outside if its cold makes me heave, horrible.

You dont like the smell of fresh air????

Where do you live?

gamerchick · 18/10/2020 17:53

Tumble dryers have their place. You just need to learn what can go in them and what isn't a good idea.

NoWordForFluffy · 18/10/2020 17:56

We don't. It goes outside when it's dry (day or night, depending on the forecast and when is best) all year round.

We're on the NW coast, so benefit from a year round coastal breeze.

I don't agree. I think overall tumble driers are bad for all clothes. Obviously delicates can't be put in a tumble drier, but even "robust" clothes like towels or jeans get damaged.
Being smashed against a metal surface with heat really breaks down fabrics and makes them wear out more quickly- buttons, zips are more prone to breakage, towels will thin and wear out more quickly because of the mechanical damage.

What makes you think I put any of that stuff in a drier? Hmm

We don't own jeans. Awful items of clothing imo.

Downwithcovid · 18/10/2020 18:13

I have never hung laundry outside. I lay it on the floor, over a radiator or tumble dry.

I am never due home early enough to be sure it will be dry and still be arsed bringing it in late at night

You don't own towels??

I have a family. Personally I don't own jeans, but other family members do.

gamerchick · 18/10/2020 18:16

I do but it's rare they get put in the drier. They're good for odd times or for the odd item of cotton in an emergency school uniform situation but certainly not for every time they need drying

Karwomannghia · 18/10/2020 18:24

Maybe our towels are magic. They never die no matter how often I put them in the dryer.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 18/10/2020 18:42

I don't, if the weather is set to be dry I'll hang it out. I have 2 lines outside & one is better this time of year than the other so I just tend to use that one from October - March, it gets any sunlight there is & the wind blows round the house lovely. It also has the advantage that it's right outside the door so if it does rain I can get it in quick. I do have a tumble dryer though & will use it to finish things off or dry completely if it's going to rain for days on end. We're a family of 7 & don't have the space for multiple airers Dh has promised me a pulley one when he make the utility room Grin.

You must be young. I have been through hundreds of towels in my life.

satnighttakeaway · 18/10/2020 18:54

@BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou

If it’s blowy and dry I put it out. Dried towels outside today in SE London. I don’t tumble dry....
Same here, I had no idea we were meant to have a date to stop putting stuff on the line. When did that start?

We usually get immensely bored with our towels , they last years despite being tumble dried. Cant bear crispy towels. The secret is not packing it too full
JamminDoughnuts · 18/10/2020 19:05

i line dry all year round

MiracletoCome · 18/10/2020 19:09

I try to get big stuff like towels, bedding and jeans out all year round but am putting smaller stuff in the dryer now

Well I consider myself young at 44 yes but these came from my mum’s to start with!
Runningdownthathill · 18/10/2020 19:57

Washing outside in the winter, dry paths or not, never dries in my experience. I don’t know how everyone else is managing it.

NoWordForFluffy · 18/10/2020 20:18

Plenty of people have explained how!

For me: coastal breeze.

scissy · 18/10/2020 20:19

My garden faces north and where the line is doesn't get sun from mid-October to early-Feb so clothes just don't dry outside then unless it's windy. I have reluctantly started using the tumble dryer this weekend after 2 days of pegging out and bringing in still (very) damp clothes.
