If we all survive this, when people talk about it in the future, I will say " it was so fucking boring "

All anyone talks about is covid . Alm that us on the news us covid. Can't go to the theatre because covid. Gigs? No covid.
Restaurants are dodgy. Pubs are dodgy. Seeing family and friends is forbidden. It is all so bloody dull.

Plus the smell. Hand sanitizer and disinfectant everywhere. Yuck.

Those who endured the great wars are probably literally spinning in their graves at the whinging generations of Brits who have followed them.

Could we please stop using the horror of the World Wars as material for your masturbatory fantasies of everyone skipping merrily hand in hand through the East End, while singing It's A Long Way to Tipperary, and giving the Luftwaffe a cheery wave. The reality was nothing like that, many people did not come through it unscathed even if they didn't lose their homes or loved ones and there's been so much harm caused by trying to silence and dismiss people from talking about the impact that events have on them.

I should hope my grandmother who endured the Second World War isn’t spinning in her grave, she’s still alive! She’s bored too. Pretty shit being 90 and stuck in your house on your own for months on end, knowing you probably haven’t got many months left.

GoldenOmber · 11/10/2020 09:46

And moaned and whinged endlessly about how bored we were and how confusing the rulz are and how it’s just NOT FAIR and generally acted like a nation of whinging babies.

How does this sort of polarisation help? We aren't all in two camps, the 'everything's fine and I'm going to carry on enjoying my brilliant life in appreciation of the rules keeping us safe' people vs the 'everything's shit and I want the rules scrapped now because I'm suffering worse than anyone ever has' people.

Most people are somewhere in between the two. You can think it's necessary for the rules to be in place and still wish they didn't have to be. You can appreciate that you are not suffering worse than anyone ever and still think it's shit you don't get to see your family. You can be glad you're not dying in an ITU somewhere and still be sodding bored!

I think it's telling that some people have this kind of panicky reaction and urge to shut down anyone who's ever grumbling about any part of this. It's okay, it doesn't change anything, people aren't going to start siding with the virus by acknowledging they're a bit fed up!

(and no the 'Blitz spirit' wasn't a generation of people all Getting On With It and never uttering a word of complaint.)

@GoldenOmber exactly this.

lljkk · 11/10/2020 09:49

If you think Lockdown and strong suppression are the way to go -- then we all should be enormously bored. Right? Coz that means we aren't directly affected, and we aren't suffering mental health (there's no moral high ground in being anxious) & we are following the rules which obviously lead to a pretty boring life.

It's the people who can't agree our lives have become very boring that you should worry about. They had direct trauma, key worker status so maybe overload, anxiety or aren't following the rules, I would have thought boring is the very best anyone is allowed to hope for nowadays.

Seagrassorchid · 11/10/2020 09:52

I cried for the first time yesterday.

I have coped up until now. I am so bored incredibly bored now. I want to be taking my children out to nice places. I still do attempt outings but they are just very stressful and not the same (obviously).

There is so much I wanted to do with my youngest that just isn't possible and I feel so sad for them.

When this is all over, we are going on holiday to kick start living again!

Ontopofthesunset · 11/10/2020 09:52

Also in general it is always nonsensical to say we can't feel bored or should just feel grateful because we're not ill or dead yet. There are always terrible things happening in the world - war, starvations, trafficking, abuse - but we are living our lives and it's not a contest. People aren't only sad if they're in the saddest possible situation. We're sad about lots of things. When my son was seriously ill in hospital as a very young baby I was worried and sad but I was also bored. And Covid and people's obsession with Covid, however justified, is boring.

Absolutely this. My two grandmothers suffered unspeakable horrors in the war which affected them for the rest of their lives. One lived under Nazi occupation and witnessed some horrific things and the other lived in London and was so traumatised by the Blitz that she suffered permanent physical trauma. I am not saying Covid is as bad of course but not everyone back then was able to be jolly in the face of such horrors. It’s pretty offensive actually.
RosieLemonade · 11/10/2020 09:54

@Crunchymum

Try having a funeral in covid times.

We'll be having my mum's soon and we need to wear masks in the hearses and at the service and cannot even have a commemoration after because of the rules.

It makes a very sad and difficult time feel utterly bleak and quite scary. How does one cry in a mask? Sad

So sorry to hear this. We buried Nanny on Monday. It was made harder by all of this. Crying in a mask is not easy at all. I was a snotty mess under it. My poor cousin had to sit completely alone at his nanny’s funeral because he lives alone and from a different part of the country.

I’m BORED of people pleasing people’s feelings. You can feel any feeling under the sun during a pandemic. Why can’t you feel bored and upset at the same time?!

Kez200 · 11/10/2020 09:54

So, adjust. Unbore yourself.

Assuming that you have little control over treatments or vaccines, then remember its here to stay until that becomes reality.

Do you have a garden? Can you walk in open countryside? Have you ever wanted to take up a craft?

If you think about what you would like to do differently. Then unbore yourself planning and getting on with it.

I do get where you are coming from as things you love have been pulled from under you. But assume this winter things will be worse not better and look for some alternatives to see you through. And get stuff now! Just in case there is another lockdown

beela · 11/10/2020 09:56

God, so bored. There's nothing else to talk about.

Aragog · 11/10/2020 09:58

Yes, we were talking about this last night. Our lives have become so small and life's just not exciting anymore. Covid has sucked so much out of it and many of us are currently just existing from day to day in the whole.

I've had three close family death since April - none Covid. Funerals over this time have been awful.

Everything just feels rubbish.

SoUtterlyGroundDown · 11/10/2020 09:59

Yes. As well as losing my job, I’ve had Covid. The ‘long’ type. It was shit being ill for 16 weeks.
I’m still bored.
I’m following the rules because I think some (not all) are necessary to suppress the virus and it’s the right thing to do.
Still bored.
My grandmother lived through the Second World War. She’s bored too.

ScaramoucheFandango · 11/10/2020 10:02

Yes, it's low level crap for a lot of us.

I've stopped watching the news regularly.( I mean what's new? )

I'm decluttering the house, life is that dull.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 11/10/2020 10:02

Those in my family who have some kind of talent to start with are doing fine (and are still working HCP and teachers) - they paint, make music, sing - even together-, do photography, write etc.
I am the one who missed out on the creativity genes (I inhertied cancer, dodgy feet and an admin mindset). All I can do is consume what others do and yes, boring it is.

ScaramoucheFandango · 11/10/2020 10:05

I find humour in odd places after being quite depressed, verging on tearful a couple of weeks ago.

Even on this thread the idea that it makes the circular Brexit discussions look less dull tickled me.

💐To all those feeling blue right now.

mum2jakie · 11/10/2020 10:05

It's shit. I'm bored but don't necessarily have any more free time than pre-covid.

Work is busier than ever but working from home alone for the majority of the week is boring and tedious. Even still having a busy job doesn't stop the monotony.

Weekends are shit because there is nowhere to go other than walking, which I'm so over, or places that need a mask. It's fucking boring!!!

justanotherneighinparadise · 11/10/2020 10:07

I’ve pretty much written off the next two years in my head.

Masturbatory fantasies 🤣
SoUtterlyGroundDown · 11/10/2020 10:12

That’s the other thing... I’m bored but not necessary because I have more ‘free time’ than usual that I can fill with wholesome hobbies. I don’t have any free time as I have a toddler at home full time. All the things we would usually do aren’t running though, so as much as I adore him, it’s boring. We’ve wrapped up and walked through the woods in the pissing down rain numerous times. Been to every park in a 3 mile radius. Set up numerous ‘messy play’ type activities then cleaned them up after 5 mins as that’s his attention span.
If I was home alone with disposable funds to spend on hobby materials maybe I’d be less bored. But I’m not and I don’t have my money due to aforementioned job loss.
Then when I am child free (after bedtime) I don’t have time to do fun things either as I’m job hunting. Which is boring.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 11/10/2020 10:13

Ok, I must add, FutureLearn has been great as always, but as much as I like learning, you can't do it each day and everyday.

Aragog · 11/10/2020 10:13

As a foreigner I don’t see this type of moaning in my home country.

Dd has friends in a number of European countries - there is definite moaning and complaining about it all happening in those countries.

Sil comes from another country - her family and friends back home are complaining about it.

My friend has family in a different country again - More complaining about it, Infact more so than here.

On the news we've seen reports of complaints, unrest, marches over restrictions on countries across the world.

It's not just the U.K. complaining about the situation!

TheoriginalLEM · 11/10/2020 10:13

Omg OP i totally agree.

Everything is fucking BORING, we had pub lunch yesterday, lovely food, no atmosphere. We went shopping for jeans for DP, cant try them on and hand sanitizer thirtyseven times in the space of an hour. I hate it, so we rarely go anywhere.

There's lots of other, serious shit that covod has caused me but the monotony is killing me.

PicsInRed · 11/10/2020 10:14

@lentilsforlunch

I hate the hand sanitiser the most. When this has passed pretty sure the smell of it will make me boak
I've realised that decades from now smells like carex will bring people to tears as they'll remind us of the pandemic... and the time before everything turned to long term shit.

The smell already evokes in me the memory of that time at the beginning of the pandemic when we were all so careful and still stunned by it all and then everything started to go quiet.

Frownette · 11/10/2020 10:21

I can't help but feel like this is massive hysteria, despite 2 covid deaths (both older).

I want to do appointments as normal. I have a support bubble household so can escape there if I need peace and quiet. It's so difficult to know exactly what regs are as it changes all the time.

So far this year I've been to a pub once and a restaurant once.
