'salads' your nan used to make...

Mine used to do this for my grandad once a week - it would consist of a boiled egg, halved, a massive spring onion or two, some pickled beetroot maybe.... (not entirely sure....) and two slices of corn beef with salad cream on the side.....

DH says his lot also used to have 'salads' like these - he reckons it's 1970's northern thing....

I wish I could remember all of the elements... Did anyone else's family eat these? I bet there are variations on the theme Grin

Home grown lettuce. With salt on.

daisypond · 10/10/2020 20:15

Yes, that sounds about right. But it was a pickled onion, not a spring onion. I don’t think spring onions ever crossed the threshold.

caughtalightsneeze · 10/10/2020 20:16

I didn't have a granny but I do remember older family members doing various salads that were fairly similar. My husband always refers to an 'old person's salad' meaning a piece of ham rolled into a tube and pushed through the middle of a pineapple ring, a leaf of big green lettuce and a boiled egg.

Yes, salt on the lettuce.

EhUp · 10/10/2020 20:17

Add a slice of orange for authentic 1970s

woodhill · 10/10/2020 20:17

Yes, always salad cream - yuck.

Cold meat, mashed potatoes and salad with beetroot and spring onion, peeled cucumber

Kolsch · 10/10/2020 20:18

My mum's salads consisted of everything. Lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, onions, radish, peppers, beetroot, cheese, egg, meat and fresh bread and butter. It was a meal in itself.

TheQueef · 10/10/2020 20:18

Scotch Egg or pork pie or bread and butter.
Special occasion edam.

Gancanny · 10/10/2020 20:19

My nana used to make the same.

She made one with over boiled new potatoes, slices of ham, sweetcorn, grated carrot, sliced hardboiled egg, beetroot, pickled onions, grated cheese, quartered tomatoes, cucumber, sald cream, and spring onions. The potatoes were hot, everything else was cold.

killerofmen · 10/10/2020 20:19

Lol, South Wales here but swap out the corned beef for spam and that's pretty much spot on. Not 70s but late 80s and very working class.

CherryPavlova · 10/10/2020 20:20

My grandmother has been a cook in service so was a very good cook. She did things like Russian salad and various things in aspic.
My mother was an awful cook but salad was still things like cucumber, lettuce, tomatoes and radishes with ham and new potatoes. Mostly grown ourselves.

My nana would sometimes use Pek. Spam was posh compared to Pek.

CMOTDibbler · 10/10/2020 20:20

My mum used to do the same sort of thing, but for some reason there would also be salted peanuts on the plate

thelegohooverer · 10/10/2020 20:21

That was my favourite dinner as a child. Does anyone remember the potato salad that came in the orange tin?

blibblibs · 10/10/2020 20:21

We had great salads as kids. It was DM rather than DGP though.
Iceberg lettuce, cucumber, tomato, apple orange & banana with lashings of salad cream and the cheapest ham rolled up and a packet of ready salted crisps!

Queenfreak · 10/10/2020 20:22

Yup, growing up in the 80s in tyneside.
Couple of lettuce leaves, a whole raddish or 2, silverskin onion, pickled beetroot, roll of ham or corned beef and salad cream. Every Friday night.

TheQueef · 10/10/2020 20:22

@Itshissister

Cucumber slices in vinegar.
We lived in a pub and Mum would make cucumber pickled in heavy malt vinegar with strong pepper. I got addicted to them. Sad
Clawdy · 10/10/2020 20:22

My gran worked as a cleaner and cook for years, and always made a delicious salad, chopped lettuce, tomatoes, spring onions, and boiled eggs, all mixed with salt, pepper and lots of salad cream! Still make it now.

Leimarel · 10/10/2020 20:23

Yeah my granny used to serve up lettuce, radishes, tomatoes, cucumber, boiled eggs and cubes of cheese, with lashings of salad cream. That was in the early 70's in the South East.

BlackLetterDay · 10/10/2020 20:23

I remember these, ours usually had mash (I used to mix salad cream into it) sometimes radishes Confused those were discarded, cheese, lettuce, tomato, cucumber and now and again a pork pie Grin

Imicola · 10/10/2020 20:23

Ha yes, similar, and I loved them as we never got salad cream at home! Boiled egg, round lettuce, grated carrot, a whole spring onion. But it was mainly egg!

trashcanjunkie · 10/10/2020 20:23

Ham, that was the other meat! And grated carrot definitely featured but the pineapple ring is a new one - that went on the slice of gammon, when she did gammon and chips!
