'salads' your nan used to make...

Mine used to do this for my grandad once a week - it would consist of a boiled egg, halved, a massive spring onion or two, some pickled beetroot maybe.... (not entirely sure....) and two slices of corn beef with salad cream on the side.....

DH says his lot also used to have 'salads' like these - he reckons it's 1970's northern thing....

I wish I could remember all of the elements... Did anyone else's family eat these? I bet there are variations on the theme Grin

Don't think it's a northern thing. My grandma did this and she was from Surrey. But she was born in the 20s. It was often with pressed tongue (which I love as a result), she preferred beetroot without vinegar, iceberg lettuce.

An Irish salad in the 80s and 90s: round or little gem lettuce, quartered tomatoes, cucumbers, sometimes beetroot, scallions, sometimes cubes of cheese, a slice or two of ham and chopped hard boiled eggs. Served with coleslaw, potato salad (made with mashed potatoes in Ireland) and brown bread and butter and salt and white pepper if you wish!

I'd still happily eat it now, apart from the ham.

New potatoes, cold meat, coleslaw, beetroot, pasta salad, baked beans, scotch egg etc is still a common Sunday lunch in our house. Sometimes followed by Viennetta for pudding.

apologies - not read the whole thread, but my great-aunt was a vegetarian (unusual in those days) so along with cubed cheese in a lettuce/tomato/cucumber salad, would add grated brazil nuts etc. Rather nice and subtle

My friend’s parents had salad every teatime. Rolled up ham, grey sliced boiled egg, cucumber, tomatoes and lettuce with white sliced buttered bread and salad cream. Then cream cakes for after. Every day!

At school we had mashed potato served in perfect balls, they used an ice cream scoop to serve them, with grated egg and picked beetroot, plus grated cheese. We loved it.

I don’t remember ever eating salad at my Nan’s house, maybe a tomato or iceberg lettuce.

My mum would occasionally buy an avocado pear which was really special. We had special bowls for those!

Boiled new potatoes or jersey royals, maybe, but MASH?? My heavens.

My MIL used to make this type of salad, no mashed potato though, I’ve never heard of that with a salad.

This is the kind of salad you can eat in winter without relying on flying in ingredients from abroad. The way previous generations ate was so much better for the environment

My nan used to make the most delicious salad. ham, lettuce and spring onion mixed with loads of mayonnaise and chopped into tiny pieces so you could shovel it in with just a fork, and washed down with a mug of tea.

Ah, classic Irish country childhood. Good times.

Also northern (but I'm still not sure if this is more regional/a different era), my grandma used to make salad like this, with triangles of buttered bread and chips cooked in chip pan with beef dripping. What I'd give to be at the table in her kitchen eating that again!
