PLEASE HELP I'm in so much pain - severe sore throat

carinaa99 · 09/10/2020 21:24

I have never had a sore throat like this
I am in so much pain and building up so much saliva as swallowing is so painful.
I have Jakeman's sweets, paracetamol, honey and lemon - nothing is cutting it.
I am thinking as this sore throat is so severe, could it be COVID?
I just need help with the pain management so any tips would be much appreciated x

Suck on dark chocolate (70%+) - helps to coat the throat and reduce coughing. Works for me, but yours sounds particularly bad.

MadauntofA · 09/10/2020 21:26

Also paracetamol/ ibuprofen

bearlyactive · 09/10/2020 21:26

Ice cubes?

Can you send someone to get a throat spray that numbs?

OneIsAWorldOfBooks · 09/10/2020 21:28

I had this last week, worst sore throat of my life. I’m also breastfeeding so couldn’t take anything but if you can try getting some tyrozets from the pharmacist. I had regular paracetamol and ibuprofen, sucked on ice cubes and the game changer was a glass of ice cold pineapple juice, stung like hell when I was drinking it but felt so much better afterwards, no idea why that helped.

Whattodo121 · 09/10/2020 21:29

Sounds like strep throat or tonsillitis to me. You need antibiotics if it’s that bad I reckon. Have had it three times ever and each time it was the illest I’ve ever felt.

Mylittlepony374 · 09/10/2020 21:29

Gargle Disprin. Kind of numbs the pain.

Pacif1cDogwood · 09/10/2020 21:29

Difflam spray.
Tyrozet lozenges.

Full doses of Paracetamol and Ibuprofen.
You can also buy Cocodamol 8/500 (Paracetamol + codeine) over the counter.

If you end up UNABLE to swallow your own saliva (not too sore to swallow, but won't go over), it's an emergency and you need to be seen in A+E.

Hope you feel better soon Thanks

OneIsAWorldOfBooks · 09/10/2020 21:29

Should add I also wondered if it was Covid but never developed a cough or temp and no one else in my family got symptoms.

chickensoup23 · 09/10/2020 21:29

Nurofen extra!

groutingqueen · 09/10/2020 21:30

Difflam spray is your friend as well as gargling salt water

Sorry OP- a serious sore throat is horrific. Hope it gets better for you soon. Keep well hydrated x

VampireBill · 09/10/2020 21:30

Gargle full fat coca cola, or drink some. Eat crisps or cornflakes. Ice cream.

I will try this tomorrow- so desperate I'll try anything!

More likely to be tonsillitis/throat infection I’d say. Difflam spray is good.

lorisparkle · 09/10/2020 21:32

I really would get this checked out. I had similar and ended up in hospital with a quinsy (abscess on the tonsils) . Whilst waiting in A&E I foolishly googled it and found out that it can be quite dangerous.

2020changedtheworld · 09/10/2020 21:32

I would go to a Tesco pharmacy first thing tomorrow, if you can & get,

Tesco own Co-Codamol. (Codeine & Paracetamol)
£2.20 ish.

Dequadin throat lozenges or similar.
£4 ish.

Then off the shelf -

Tesco Rapid Pain Relief Ibuprofen (it has Lysine in it) £2.20.

You can take them with the Co-Codamol.

Vicks throat spray.

& gargle with salt water.

Difflam spray

carinaa99 · 09/10/2020 21:33

My tonsils look ok, I've never had tonsillitis before?

OP posts:
Gottheteeshirtandlostit · 09/10/2020 21:33

Agree with whattodo re tonsillitis or strep throat. Dh had tonsillitis and it was the worst I've ever seen him, I had it at another point and I was in tears with it. I think you need to see a doctor.

BadDucks · 09/10/2020 21:34

I would get it checked in case it is a quinsy (abscess) worst sore throat I’ve ever had and spent two days in hospital.

Gottheteeshirtandlostit · 09/10/2020 21:34

Also - try gargling with warm water and salt mixture. It really does help.

toomanyspiderplants · 09/10/2020 21:36

I am thinking tonsillitis. I had this two years ago ended up in a&e with quinsy. you need to get checked by Dr.

OperationallySound · 09/10/2020 21:37

Was just going to suggest getting checked out in case it's quinsy. Mumsnet medical advice is variable at best, and if you're struggling to swallow saliva, then chocolate, ice-cream etc isn't a solution. I'd keep up with the pain relief, if it gets worse tonight then ring 111. Otherwise, if there's no improvement tomorrow, I'd get an emergency GP appt.

UniversallyUnchallenged · 09/10/2020 21:38

Gargle with very very salty water - every half hour till it hurts less

MyNameForToday1980 · 09/10/2020 21:41

@pacif1cDogwood suggested just what I would have, and I had tonsillitis a LOT until I had them removed aged 37.

Also - if your tonsils have white spots, or you have a fever - it's likely to be bacterial and need antibiotics.

If not, it's likely viral, so you just have to wait it out and keep as comfortable as possible.

Tonsillitis is the pits, far more painful and debilitating than we give it credit for.
